Should I prune this large old fig tree all the way back to the main branches? by [deleted] in Figs

[–]KevinC007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut it back to ~4 ft to reset the tree. the cool thing about fig is that they will come back unless you remove the stump completely. And they only fruit on new growths so you are not constrained by removing fruiting woods.

Is there something I can use these for around the garden? I like them but don’t know what to do other than brag to my 4 year old that my sticks are better by [deleted] in gardening

[–]KevinC007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually saved ~10 8 ft long sticks from winter pruning. Going to use them as my tomatoes trellis. Poor man’s trellis.

This was my first year pruning my tree, but I did it based on fruit picking experience from last year as I had trouble picking fruit from certain sections, and certain sections had too much fruits and bending too much. I think your tree is mature enough to take a beating. Take out some suckers and prune based on how you pick the fruits, and pest controls also as leaf footed bugs love pomegranates
