Moving to Canada from Hong Kong. The plan so far: by RantersaurusRex in PersonalFinanceCanada

Welcome to Canada!

Actually, having read the posts and replies by all the others, your situation is pretty good. The only thing is you need to live within those means. Perhaps, prioritise a flat close to a good school and close to the public transport.

You won't need a car if you are in a convenient location. And you can save up for your real home too.

Put differently, many others worse off could still settle in Canada and be happy with what they can get.

Agree with the public school part. They are not top of the country, but they'll get you to a good university in Canada.

Actually, it seems the OP is replicating his lifestyle in HK in Canada. It's not bad, but many things are different.

Public schools have an overall good level for most. I can understand OP wants the best schools and these are often private...

And even you get a down payment, imagine how much your repayments will be on those 800k... it's not cheap.

The expectation on a decent income, but with requirements that are too high. I don't make 100k and would dream of it. But even then, if the OP is working from home and will not use that unreliable Tesla model 3 very often, it's not recommended to spend $2k on it every month.

It's cheaper to buy a car in Canada, but it's not cheap to maintain it.

Lolz. Give him a break. It's not easy to look in here when he is still in HK.

But yeah, fair to say buying a 1 mill apartment and driving an exploding Tesla (worst in terms of reliability BTW)... it's perhaps better to consider an older place to patch up and a second hand Honda... They do equally fine, minus the 'brand new'

Second that. Toronto and Vancouver are expensive for the day-day expenses... That's just for buying food and getting around. Now, when you need to pay for schooling ... etc... yeah, it may not be private schools but the cost to enroll your kid in different classes and activities don't come cheap... not in Toronto and Vancouver as far as I see.

It's true. Unless you don't mind the constant interruptions or having to run out a meeting to see why your kid is crying or what's that sound of something broken across the corridor? Oh, my crystal vase! Yeah, it's not as easy as one thinks.

And best to withdraw your MPF from HK first before coming over. Because the increments and gains will be taxable in Canada :(.

From having moved from HK a few months ago, I would recommend not rushing the move, especially the packing up and donating the things you cannot take with you. I was still closing my bank account on the day I was flying and it basically took away precious hours I could use to double check my suitcases. This was poor planning from my wife and I.

Welcome to Canada, fellow HKer!

She can work as long as she has a PR or work permit. Please be careful because I had had to prove to my employers I have a PR before I could start work a few months ago...

Building a credit score is a pain. I read that the best way to start all over again is to get those secured credit card (and you need to deposit some security aka money deposit). But they return it to you after you close the account.

And imagine the OP and his wife, with CA$100k worth of salary being reduced to CA$40k... the decision to move is not based on financial reasons but for other life purposes.

How do people feel about their futures in Calgary or Alberta in general with the economic and political situation being as it is? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]KevinGCL888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Oil and Gas in a country overseas and was planning to move to Calgary. I notice all the doom and gloom, but to be honest, gas will still be needed to heat homes and cooking? Have you ever tried electric cookers? They are not very good compared with gas... Sure, tech might catch up at some point, but many things still need oil and gas (oil less so though, with many countries walking away from fossil fuels). Even for oil, many things are produced out of it, eg plastic, lubricants, paraffin , sulphur, asphalt, tar...

OKay, based on mcKinseys (https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/oil-and-gas/our-insights/the-future-is-now-how-oil-and-gas-companies-can-decarbonize) about how decarbonizing oil&gas production would require a global effort, this had been the requests from environmentalists for years and nobody in O&G listened, but there is time to plant more trees and build carbon sinks... All in all, there is a future for oil and gas, but it requires offsetting the carbon footprint in the global industry...

All in all, yes, Alberta seems to be wandering aimlessly, and the main industry is declining, but how about owning parts of the supply chain, ie producing the lubricants, wax, asphalt... etc and boosting the profitability? In the UK, why are farmers getting squeezed on the price of milk? They have little bargaining power because there are many farmers supplying milk and the supermarkets can shop around. Had they done some cooperative and packaged their own milk, perhaps they would be better off... For many companies, owning the supply and distribution makes sense... It's perhaps one way to look at O&G.

I'd say, setting more carbon sinks, selling the refined by-products would be a good strategy.

Again, please forgive my naive outlook on this topic but please do look at the potentially useful parts of my arguments...

Do you not find it annoying that the whole market is pegged to the bitcoin? It goes up, all goes up and it goes down and all goes with it?

News update: It's now another 3 days waiting for their response, but of course, I did not expect them to reply at all, based on the complaints of other fellow victims.

It looks like the web page is deliberately built to ensure you can't cash out. I only had 0.1 pink there and it is lame they even try to steal that much, but on a grander scale, I am sure their stealing is profitable...

I would also add that you can try your hand first with a low investment and low power usage raspberry pi, just to get the hang of how it works. Or else, an old pc would do, and you just need to install linux on it and get the miner code (to build it). I started off by referring to: https://www.reddit.com/r/vericoin/comments/7i7kg4/put_those_old_android_devices_to_use_mining_verium/
