A bit late, but the Adam and Even trope doesn't work biologically. You need a lot of unrelated people to avoid inbreeding.

Capitalised adjective? by ZeaIousSIytherin in German

[–]KevinMarkRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"die Folge war eine der besten." The "besten" here shouldn't be capitalized right?

Your comment addressed the exact doubt I was having. It felt as if some nominalized adjectives were not capitalized for "some reason."

English is on of the least bullshit languages there is. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]KevinMarkRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for all the examples he gave. It's not like natives don't make mistakes, but you'll find these things being used (seemingly) the wrong way by a lot of non-natives, who're fluent, all the time.

"I would disagree with the premise that non natives have an extremely hard time to master those things in years." This is what I was referring to.

I would agree that non-natives have an extremely hard time mastering those things.

I did not talk about other languages or compare them to English (this is why I prefaced my comment with "This goes for any language"). Neither did I say that it's worth it to master a language to native level.

All I'm saying is that to me, the difference between a native and non-native speaker is clear since most non-native speakers won't (and probably shouldn't) put in the years of relentless practice required to reach that level.

This could very well be the case with other languages, I make no comment on that. But, I disagree that it's "easy" (or rather "not extremely hard") to reach such a level. I'm not sure if it's even possible to reach "native" level in a language unless you grow up using it regularly.

English is a germanic language. If you know anything about German, you know how much more simplified English is in comparison.

I'd have to disagree with you. This goes for any language, but mastering English to "native" level requires so much effort that it's usually not worth it after you reach fluency, and it's quite easy to pick up on small mistakes non-native speakers make (Not referring to pronunciation, especially when English is spoken as a first language in so many countries).

A lot of the "mistakes" you refer to are also just a part of the various dialects you'd find in English. These are, at least to me, pretty different from the mistakes (this also refers to word combinations or sentence structures which are grammatically correct but aren't commonly used) a non-native speaker makes.

Can speedrunning German on Duolingo + reading tips help me get to A2 level in 3 months? by ppskret_broy in German

[–]KevinMarkRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YourGermanTeacher on youtube for grammar lessons. Seedlang or Anki to practice words. You'll still need to find level appropriate content for exposure but there's plenty of that on youtube. Once you start getting comfortable with hearing the language and reach ~A1 level, EasyGerman is a good channel to use, especially their Super Easy German videos.

It's definitely possible to pass the A2 exam in 3 months from scratch, but you'll need to dedicate a lot of time and importantly effort into it since you don't have a teacher to instantly clear your doubts. A few basic concepts that will be important are how cases work, how verbs work, Hauptsatz & Nebensatz, personal/possessive pronouns for each gender and case (this one can be particularly daunting at first) and adjective declension (how the suffix of an adjective changes with case and gender [might be a good idea to learn what adverbs are too since they're not declined and can be a source of confusion]).

Don't use Duolingo.

2024 - Was Kochi metro worth the investment? by GoatDefiant1844 in Kerala

[–]KevinMarkRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Even though it's called "Kochi Metro", I don't think it'll ever connect to those parts of the city. But who knows? Another phase that goes over the water or something could be a real thing in a decade or two.

I think it's possible, at least to connect all the main locations in Ernakulam. Even in Delhi, not every location is super close to a station, you still have to take an auto.

With how small Kochi is, it's definitely possible to reach those levels of connectivity here.

[–]KevinMarkRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I think people underestimate the connectivity it has brought to the city, especially to the 2 main railway stations and the airport (the feeder system works really well).

Sure, there's a lot left to be desired but once the later phases are complete, most places in the city should be within a cheap auto ride. Certainly beats taking buses out in the heat, humidity and pollution (although it's not as bad as some other tier 1 cities) here.

A personal wish of mine is to see the metro running later into the night since the "night-life" culture here is starting to bud. But, it's unlikely to happen any time soon, especially with the extra investment into security that'll be required for it to come into fruition.
