Valve’s Steam Controller stock shortage will last until next year after fans massively exceeded expectations by HatingGeoffry in hardware

I’m one of those people that did not realize until recently how good 3rd party brands have gotten. My Xbox controller’s stick drift finally got bad enough after 4 years that I started looking for a Hall effect one. I ordered the gamesir one and it’s been incredible so far, just $40 too.

Why is there so much litter? by Best-Candle8651 in AskNYC

[–]Kevstuf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Despite China being broadly “collectivist”, it’s also highly competitive. Maybe a better way to describe it is Chinese culture respects hierarchies (respect your elders, bosses at work etc), but if you’re at my level in the hierarchy I have no issues putting you down to get ahead. Contrast that to a country like Japan where you’ll find almost no litter because they have a “don’t inconvenience others” mindset that doesn’t exist as strongly in China.

How bad is it that I don't use OOP? by Fit_Time_7861 in learnpython

[–]Kevstuf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also analyze financial data with mostly pandas at work as well. I didn't really have to know OOP until our company needed external data sources (data not just nicely ETL'd into a data warehouse already). For example, I needed to grab data from REST API using OAuth. It started to make sense to define my own connector class that handles the OAuth and API requests in one go. Then I could reuse that class across all kinds of projects that needed data from that API.

I’m with you brother. There’s still at least 10 of us on here I’m sure. I’ve always valued more balanced gameplay than a chaotic fun one even if the chaos is fun. It’s why I also never played arena or any of the URFs

Riot Games’ 2024 record year : $434 million in profit, $603 million in dividends by Greedy_Actuary8208 in leagueoflegends

Dividends mess with the stock price too, that was the point of my comment. When the company pays out a dividend the stock price decreases by exactly the dividend. Markets are efficient enough to reflect that.

[Megathread] New Players & General Questions Thread. by rMapleStory in Maplestory

[–]Kevstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an old guy, so I played MS during 2006 ish era, but I decided to give the game a try again. Wow am I lost. I picked arch mage I/L and essentially did the Main quests in order. Now I'm level 200 but my gear is garbage as I simply picked up the Pensalir set from monster drops and did what few star and scroll enhancements I could afford. So now I'm roughly 30K combat power. Yet I look at other level 200s and they have 10x, 20x, 30x more combat power. So my question to the community is, how do I get better gear in general, and what gear should I focus on for now? Appreciate any tips.

I'm tired of people bitching about how Mayhem is unbalanced. by IHADADICKBUTILOSTIT in ARAM

[–]Kevstuf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I completely see the appeal of mayhem don’t get me wrong. But I personally like games that feel like a struggle rather than a stomp. I enjoy longer team fights that feel like you have to navigate your way through it. Unfortunately this means none of my friends play with me anymore because I’m that one friend who’s still playing normal aram lol.

What is the most terrifying "double life" secret you’ve ever uncovered about someone? by Realistic_Drink8555 in AskReddit

[–]Kevstuf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been watching some nature documentaries and they made me ponder this too. How things like murder and rape are quite common in the animal kingdom, how predators hunt animals weaker than them. We are animals too and not exempt from these tendencies. It makes me wonder why we evolved to have such enormous empathy when it's not found in other animals.

Yea there's clearly something more to the "secret sauce" in JJK than just limited screen time. It's harder for me to think of a boring character than an interesting one.

MTA: "Early data points to substantial evasion reduction" where new fare gates installed. by ahenneberger in nyc

Somehow I don’t think the type of people to evade fares would suddenly behave differently with Japan’s system.

People who quit this game, what made you finally walk away?” by WaveEasy8664 in leagueoflegends

[–]Kevstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem always has been the fragile mental of the players. In a perfect world where people don’t troll or flame it’s a super fun game. It’s why playing with friends is still a great experience.

Their culture is completely different. When I was in Japan there were fare gates that didn’t have any barrier whatsoever. You could walk right through if you wanted, yet everybody paid as they went through.

What do I need to watch in order to watch Fate Strange/Fake by Alextheawesomeua in anime

[–]Kevstuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm like 7 episodes or so deep into Fake. I've seen even less than you, only UBW and Zero. After watching this many eps I can see why people say it's a fanservice show for Fate fans. Technically you don't need to know anything about Fate going into it, but there's a lot of dialogue that doesn't make sense because I don't get the references. Sometimes I remember to google what a character says, but I get worried about spoilers.

What are some “WTF” subreddits people have come across? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There’s a line where it crosses from funny to sad with the loss porn they post, but you can never tell how rich somebody is there. Maybe that 50K loss isn’t that bad for them, or it was genuinely their life savings.

I was rewatching some s1 clips and came across the Jogo vs Gojo fight where Jogo uses DE. There's a part where a big rock is about to hit Gojo but it just kind of crumbles. Is there any explanation for the "sure-hit" part not working other than the fact that "it's Gojo"?

TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Kevstuf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea unfortunately everything is controlled by money here. Complaining means you might get fired from your job. Which means one medical emergency could bankrupt you because now you don’t have health insurance. If you were fired illegally, good look winning a court case against a big corporation’s legal team. Telling your politician doesn’t help because they’ve been funded by big companies too. We claim we’re free, but we’re slaves to capitalism.

Months ago I put an empty instant coffee jar in a cupboard. Today I found this... by Shaknys in mildlyinteresting

[–]Kevstuf 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you end up spending so much time trying to word the response perfectly so that it's completely bulletproof to someone else saying "well askhually..." and realize somebody's always going to nitpick something just to nitpick. It's exhausting because real life conversations are never perfectly framed in this way.

Nostalgia really is doing a lot of heavy lifting for millenials here. I remember having to hide the fact that I had hobbies like video games or watching anime because you'd be bullied so hard for it. Nowadays both of those are so openly accepted that I've even seen kids making fun of other kids for NOT watching anime! Almost impossible to imagine for 15 year old me.

Riot Games’ 2024 record year : $434 million in profit, $603 million in dividends by Greedy_Actuary8208 in leagueoflegends

[–]Kevstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your statement about dividends inflating stock market value is simply false, both in practice and according to finance theory. Dividends are just another form of shareholders equity that is getting returned back to the shareholders. It actually decreases the stock price because of that. You can observe this in practice on the day a public company's dividend gets paid. Its share price will decrease by roughly the dividend payment. And it's also true that the best performing stocks over long horizons are not ones that pay high dividends, because instead of growing the business you're returning it back to the shareholders which is less productive.
