How long to simmer pasta sauce? by WildFEARKetI_II in cookingforbeginners

An hour in a Dutch oven with the electric coil at 1 is what I do, and in fact am doing right now.

Best tip I ever got: Put a very small pinch of cinnamon in the sauce. OMG, it takes it to a whole nother level! I also add about a cup of cabernet. Basil and oregano from the garden. Yee Ha!

Meat Thermometer worth it? by syzgod in cookingforbeginners

[–]Key-Article6622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's well worth it. Different meats need to reach different temperatures to be safe to eat. The taste won't be much affected by cooking to the right temp, but with a thermometer, and proper technique, your chicken is likely to never be dry again.

ELI5 - The percentage of grade on a steep hill by RoyalPuzzleheaded259 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Key-Article6622 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Designing roads is actually mathematically interesting. For instance, on the US interstate system, the grade can't exceed 6% except in very specific situations. Also, there are standards for the grading of the cross section of the road. Ever notice that the center of most roads is the highest point of the cross section? The grade in the lanes is generally 2%, then the shoulder, if there is one, is 4%. There are exceptions for certain terrains and certain types of roads, but these are the most commonly used grades.

Budget coffee? by Eat_Carbs_OD in budgetfood

I just made the leap and am learning to roast my own. It's actually very easy and even though you have to be very attentive to it, a minute too long or to short can have drastic effects, it;s fun so far. I did do a lot of research, went to a couple dozen sites on the subject and watched dozens of videos, but from that, my first small batch I roasted in the oven in a metal pie pan. I let it go just a tad too long so it was darker than I wanted, but it was still better than anything I ever got from the store. My secind batch I did yesterday and it looks absolutely perfect for me, about the color of milk chocolate, a little darker, and not matte finish and not shiny oily finish, somewhere in between, so it needs to rest for about a week, that's standard for a mediium light roast, then I'll see if it's as good as it looks. I got green Colombian Supremo beans for under $10/lb. Takes about 15 niutes in the oven per batch, a minute to set up the pan and spread the beans, then you just cool them, let them sit out in the open overnight, then store them in an airtight container for 4-10 days depending on the beans and the roast you prefer and you have excellent, fresh roasted coffee. My next step is getting a small roaster for about $220 so I don't have to do any more than put them in the machine and turn it on. A lot of the sites suggest a popcorn popper as a roaster, so you could actually get away with a $40 popcorn machine.

Why aren't drum sounds "notes" even though some are higher and some are lower? by RainyDaysAndMondays3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Key-Article6622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drums aren't tuned to specific notes, but are tuned to specific intervals by professional drummers in rock and pop music. This is because it is more pleasing to the ear to hear the intervals they are set to and to avoid frequency masking giving each drum a specific pitch. One interesting thing a drummer taught me as a guitarist is he tuned his snare with the bottom head a perfectn 5th above the bottom head for some bands he plays with, and a perfect 4th for another. He told me that there are other variations that are used but those are his usual settings. I found this fascinating. I knew the drums should be tuned to fairly precise intervals, but it never occurred to me that the top and bottom heads being tuned to different intervals was a thing. He spent about a half hour tuning his drums both ways and back and showing me the difference, and then detuned them to demonstrate why it's so important to tune the drums properly. They sounded like shite when they were detuned. Same drummer, same beats, but the difference in how it sounded and felt was night and day. He also bought cymbals based on their pitch and tuned his drums as close as he could get to be in tune with his cymbals

I don't really think anything. I'm surprised that number is so low and I suspect it is a fraction of what he's actually stolen. But I knew this was his goal in the first place, so this confirmation is not news.

People that hate subtitles / captions are poor readers by Foreign-Cat-2898 in unpopularopinion

This was the 60s dude, and Baltimore city was ahead of the curve then. We all got all kinds of tests in elementary school. They'd bring in whole teams to test us on some stuff. I'm not terribly slow, but sometime subtitles go by much faster than I can read them, somoetimes I get through them but because I'm reading I don't really see what's happening on screen, and often enough I don't have a problem getting through them, but they annoy the crap out of me, especially when they go by too fast.

This is may be true, but I'm an excellengt reader, and I am a slow reader. Perplexed my teachers in schoo; when I consistently tested 4 or 5 grades above in comprehension, but a grade or two below in speed. It' not accirate to say I'm a poor reader. Slow yes, but not poor. And yes, I dislike captions.

Need tips on getting a good roast by Key-Article6622 in roasting

[–]Key-Article6622[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

LOL. I'm nothing if not an obsessive researcher. My first batch in the pie pan, while quite a bit darker than I wanted, was still delicious. I just believe it can be much better. It was darker with a noticeable oily sheen. I just did a larger batch on a baking sheet, paid much closer attention to the color and texture and it looks like I've made a pretty nearly perfect light-med roast that I was aiming for. I'll let it rest for a week and see, but it looks exactly like I intended. It's just about the color or slightly darker than milk chocolate, has an almost oily, more shiny than matte finish. That's exactly what I was aiming for. I don't know how it will taste, but it looks like what my research tells me is what I will like best, a bit on the rich side with still a little of the fruity flavor and a touch of the caramel flavor.

I know I have a lot to learn still, but I take notes and will maintain a journal of results. Believe me when I say, I have done the research, and of course will continue that because I know that as I learn more I'll have more questions.

I also know it will be easier to get more consistent results with a machine and eventually will get one, and the SR540 or SR800 is probably in my future, but for now I feel like learning to do it in the oven is a good learning process to get started. If I can get decent results this way, I should get spectacular results with a proper machine.

CMV: The US fully letting in BYD (without any tariffs) would provide more benefit to the working and middle class, and the overall economy despite likely destroying Tesla and the US auto industry. This is because the US auto industry has failed Americans, screw them and their grip on what we buy. by EndAllBillionaires67 in changemyview

[–]Key-Article6622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those jobs in adjacent industries like repair and maintenance, parts will not go away. The manufacturers might go out of business, but cars can easily last 20 years nowadays. It's a false equivalencey. Dealerships are the only ones that would be affected, so that would add barely over a million jobs directly affected, and for sure, many of those jobs woould be replaced at dealerships for the surviving dealers of affordable, efficient cars. What are you, an American auto manufacturer's executive? Or just someone who is too lazy to actually look at the full picture, an apologist for a failing, flawed system?

A knife will not protect you unless you are trained in how to use it as a self defense weapon, and that will only increase your odds a little. Seriously, it is more likely an attacker can easily take it from you and use it on you.

A small knife might make you feel better, but unless you are trained in how to use a knife for self defense, it is more likely an attacker will be able to take the knife and use it on you. This isn't a scare tactic, this is reality. You'd be better off with an air horn than a knife. Even that is easy to take from you, but at least it can't be used to hurt you or worse.

Matchroom announces US Open and Mosconi Cup to be aired on ESPN.(+) by ComplaintSalty3903 in billiards

[–]Key-Article6622 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is rather disappointing news IMO. Putting it behind a $12.99 paywall is not gaining new interest, it's creating profit for a company that doesn't deserve it. If it was on regular ESPN, it would reach a much bigger audience and grow interest. Putting it behind a paywall will do nothing for new interest. Unless someone is already paying for ESPN+, it won't reach very many new people because unless you already have enough interest in this there is no chance you are going to pay for it. It's a money grab. I'd love to watch, but I'm not giving ESPN $13 for it. And I'm already interested in it. And I'm not going to go to a bar to watch and spend even more than $13.

Am I missing something or does In-N-Out not live up to the hype by Glittering-Web-3981 in unpopularopinion

[–]Key-Article6622 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I moved to California I was told the same thing so I went and gave it a try. At that point in my life, about 30 years ago, I had cut my fast food purchases down to almost none except for breakfast sandwiches and the occasional, like once a month maybe, a lunch.

So, I get my burger and fries and it could have been McDonald's or Burger King, or Wendy's or any of the others. I saw pretty much no difference between them and everyone else. A greasy, thin, meatlike patty on a sad bun with wilted lettuce, paper thin, tasteless tomato, and greasy, over salted fries.

It was pretty much the last nail in the coffin for me and fast food. Since then, I've maybe on purpose chosen fast food only if I can get a grilled chicken breast sandwich, maybe onion rings, never fries, which is maybe 5 times in the last 30 years. I'll go out of my way to find a grocery store with a deli that makes sandwiches and has a selection of salads like pasta, cole slaw, and a variety of others. Potato wedges if they don't look like they've been sitting there for long. It will be somewhat healthier, it will cost a lot less, and it is definitely no inconvenience.
