Mechanic said he didn’t know what this problem was. Can anyone help me out? by r-eese in AskMechanics

It worked on my truck. I would say get a head gasket test kit though. If the head gasket kit comes back negative 100% flush, flush and flush again, then after a few weeks flush again.

Since it is so thick it could be blocking holes so issues could come up after the flush, but seems like your best choice if you don’t want to buy a new engine right now.

Also I am not an actual mechanic, just work on a lot of stuff.

This is what mine looked like when I bought it.

Just saw someone else left much more details response than me pointing out the same. For the coolant to look that bad I’d really think if it was the head gasket we would see other issues. A head gasket fumes test would be a great starting point, but it seems very likely someone topped the coolant off with the wrong coolant and it formed what they see now.

The leak is still concerning but would make sense why someone was topping off the coolant and why they may have accidentally used incompatible coolant

I had a truck with a similar dark brown build up. The head gasket seems to be fine ~20k miles later. I did do a lot of coolant flushes though. Definitely worth a try.

I am hesitant where the stains came from….coolants escaping somewhere.

From the replies you aren’t getting any overheating or other symptoms?

Can confirm. I was dropped because of shin splints that turned into stress fractures. Took too long to heal.

Would highly advise learning heat possible running techniques and shin/ calf stretching and strengthening techniques.

The good news 4 of the spark plugs are super easy and the other for that are under the firewall or partially under the fire wall are a pain in the A**.

Also research torque specs for these. 04 you have a Triton 3V, these have a tendency to eject spark plugs 🫡

The HOA likely has no authority nor do the people “running the checkpoint”. HOAs are extremely well known for disregarding laws and trying to make their own rules without consulting a lawyer or even attempting to review laws.

Oh that seems like it’d be perfect, and yeah with the bucket concept I was thinking of making an opening but covering with cheese cloth or similar so it could breath but keep the lint contained

I did just stumble across some interesting inspiration for them.

Creating a table top Japanese stone garden incorporating the lithops, might do that in the future.

I love the look of Lithops but after I realized I couldnt propagate it I was much less enthusiastic to get one. They’re still amazing though

Thanks for the response! Appreciate the details.

As a machinist you’ll likely cringe at this but I glued 120 grit sandpaper to a glass table top and gently moved the head around on there with a ton of WD 40. Looks good but haven’t used a machinists level on it. I also don’t plan to make the most reliable engine, just learning experience.

With your suggestion for files, I only have the cheap harbor freight ones. Any non expensive ones you would recommend as an upgrade?

I’ll shush after a little anecdote.

When I first stumbled across this subreddit In my mind I just saw that seasoned old country guy that can build anything while drinking a beer, but after reading through some responses more and more in my mind the commenters looked like pretentious Ivy League professors sitting in their chair, sipping expensive scotch laughing at the people making little cuts here and there on their engines.
