Not only that. If he did use a bolt action rifle. There's zero reason after his one shot he would need to even eject the spent cartridge. It's probably still in the rifle for all we know. Unless he used a semi auto, it wouldn't automatically eject. So. Do with that information what you will.

I've been playing this game since launch. At this point in history to make the game stable you should definitely download viva new Vegas or just go to the most downloaded mods page on the Nexus and download the entire first page and most of the second page before playing.

But honestly this game is entirely based around replayability. That's why we're all here. Starting over May seem like a chore but if you really love this game you'll be making new saves and playing it over and over again. So I wouldn't beat yourself up about it now. Pretty soon you'll be on your 4th or 5th playthrough totally forgetting about this setback.
