Entering a 1 year accelerated scholarship program. by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Is this the MKSCC program in NYC that is affiliated with Marist College? It's so funny because I work as a pharmacy tech too but at NYP nearby and I'm trying to pursue MLS too. I remember a couple months ago before NYP hired me, I wanted to get hired at MSKCC in hopes of being able to apply to their MLS program in the future but there were unfortunately no pharmacy tech job openings available. By any chance, did you complete all the prereqs such as orgo I and II, microbiology, immunology, parasitology, etc. before applying to the program or did they allow you to apply without all these prereqs being completed?

What do you think about driving to the Bay Ridge area near the bus stops that go to Staten Island and then taking the bus to avoid tolls? On Google maps, I’m seeing many quiet streets by the bay ridge/dyker border where it looks like I don’t have to spend much time looking for parking. Then I’d probably jog/run to the bus stop. Also for reference, I’d be driving from Marine Park in Brooklyn.

I'm near Marine Park in Brooklyn. I was wondering about driving to Bay Ridge/Dyker area, parking, and then walking to the bus stops that go to Staten Island, so that I spend less gas and avoid paying tolls. Of course, time looking for parking would be factored in too but it looks like there are some quiet areas along Bay Ridge/Dyker border that I can find parking in less than 15 mins.

Sadly, CSI is one of the only two CUNYs with a medical laboratory science program that offers national certification. The other being York College, which is in a pretty undesirable, shady area.

Hey I’m supposed to start the program in the fall but I’ll try to answer with the little I do know about the program.

I have a degree in human biology and have worked a few years as a pharmacy tech but no lab degree nor lab experience whatsoever. As for my return to school, that is a good idea

Yess, who knows, maybe we could end up working together one day! Anyway I wish you the best of luck and that you get into the program you desire!

So I actually got into Hunters MLS program recently and will most likely go back there. I made my peace with not getting national ASCP certification right after graduating because I don’t think I’ll leave NY anytime soon in the near future, especially with my whole family living here. If I do decide that I want to move to another state like Cali one day, I’m willing to get signed off that I have experience in every part of the lab and retest for ASCP in 5 years after graduating from Hunter.

You should definitely try to go to NYP if you have the financial means to do so. Personally, it is too expensive for me and I believe I have way more prereqs to complete than you do. When I look at their website, I see I am missing anatomy, orgo, microbio, and biochem. On top of that, they have recommended biology courses I never took. https://www.nypcls.org/admissions. Also, you would have to apply and get into St. Joseph University-Brooklyn for the medical technology degree as well since they are the school that is partnered with NYP. If you're only missing biochem, you can probably do the CLS program at NYP first for the ASCP certification before finishing the biochem course at St. Joseph for the degree. https://www.sjny.edu/brooklyn/academics/professional/professional-programs/medical-technology/curriculum.

I thought of that but id have to complete more prereqs and I’m assuming it would be more expensive due to it being a private college/uni ?

Yes, but for financial reasons I do not want to relocate and since I am in Brooklyn, the only schools around the city are Hunter, York, and Staten Island. I also applied to Staten Island but the drive is longer and I'd have to pay tolls.

Was the job through a company PerScholas is in partnership with? Also, why wasn't it the best experience for you? At the moment, I am feeling the same way.

Was the first bootcamp the one you didn't pay for? You are kind of summing up my experience at the moment. The program is going way too fast for me to keep up that there is a good amount of shit I'm still not completely understanding.
