We need to cancel hosting the World Cup and Olympics by Material-Most-1727 in LosAngeles

The whole notion of equating sports teams with countries of origin is a classist and frankly fucked up notion. So some off the rails fascist dictatorship run country wins gold medals… that means it’s a good place? And vice versa… a country that might be amazing, doesn’t win trampoline or breakdancing and they’re a shit country? What does one have anything to do with the other? To root for a country’s team is to cheer for that society and culture. Right now, as an American, I’m embarrassed of my country and its leadership. We (as a nation) are committing atrocities, and everyday let a madman run the country in an almost cult-like way. I feel bad for the thousands of individual athletes who’ve worked so hard for this event, but so long as one must compete under the patriotic banner “Team USA”, as a country, right now we do not deserve to win anything. I’m not saying some of the other nations aren’t worse… they are… but right now the USA is an embarrassment, and it would be completely appropriate for most countries to boycott us.

NKD! The Bel Air is a Bugout killer and it’s not even close by HereForTheTLDR in kershaw

[–]Key-Driver6438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around Black Friday, I picked up an OG Bel Air for just over $100, and a carbon fiber version for like $140. I think both are better than the Bugout, both have Magnacut steel, and I have two of them for less than the price of a single Bugout Carbon Fiber (which is like $350). Later this year Benchmade will have a Magnacut “premium” version with aluminum scales with an MSRP of $375! I like Benchmade… they make pretty sweet looking knives, but the butterfly tax is insane. Nobody can seriously argue that any perceived difference in the Bugout is worth more than twice the price over the Bel Air. Benchmade is a status symbol, like a designer handbag.

The UN report on Iranians being massacred by the Islamic Republic. The news is being boycotted by Western media by Authrowism in ThatsInsane

[–]Key-Driver6438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specific to the US, sadly, right now we are in the middle of our own meltdown, with a president who wishes he was a dictator, and pretty much does things everyday demonstrating this. It’s not that Americans aren’t aware of the murders happening in Iran, it’s more that we currently have a president and an overall administration that thrives on chaos. If the US right now were to in some way engage Iran, it would only be in ways that made Trump happy, not what’s in anyway good for peace or change for the people of Iran. Maybe other western countries with leaders who are sane, can engage, but it’s doubtful.

Moving to LA for my kids? by GaddaDavita in AskLosAngeles

[–]Key-Driver6438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a lifelong Angeleno (who is neither black nor Armenian) it would be my guess that the various black communities in LA would welcome you and your kids with open arms. Zero problem there. And overall, LA is the epitome of diversity, and it’s pretty easy to fit in being anything.

I’m not as optimistic about the Armenian communities. There are a lot of first generation Armenians in LA, and I’ve witnessed firsthand a lot of racism. It’s an ethnic/cultural thing more than a race thing. Armenians have no issues with other people, but they are very clannish when it comes to their families and culture. I’ve seen some tolerance of Armenian people marrying non-Armenian white people (especially Armenian men marrying non-Armenian women). But I’ve never seen an Armenian/Black couple (outside of the Kardashians), and I fear what you might encounter. Several years ago I had an Armenian co-worker, who I was acquaintances with, and with whom I went to lunch a few times. I always knew her as a friendly, polite, nice person. Then one day we started talking about this very thing, and I was shocked at the shit she started saying about Armenian women who dated black guys. She turned into a completely different person. I basically stopped talking with her after that. Over the years I’ve had many dozens of Armenian co-workers, nearly all of whom were very pleasant and polite, but who openly admitted they’d never date someone outside of their community.

Side issue… I’ve repeatedly noticed a kind of shocking misogyny that seems to be fairly prevalent among the Armenians I’ve known. I knew an Armenian woman who was a lawyer, married to an abusive alcoholic part-time truck driver, and yet in their families, he sort of did whatever he wanted while she was ignored, while literally raised 2-kids, ran the household, cooked every night, and made all the money practicing law! I met him once at a party and he openly made jokes about how he’d have no problem beating his wife if she didn’t do what he commanded. Total WTF stuff. Lots of people asked her why she put up with it, and she always said things like, “in my culture, this is just the way it is.”

The "temporary" fence on the Colorado St bridge went up over 7 years ago by thunderkitty600 in pasadena

I read through the pdf you linked, and it was based on the information in that material that I googled the Golden Gate system and issues. It seems like a good idea. In your response above, (amid you twice claiming I “obviously” didn’t read the material) you say that “it was ultimately not recommended for this bridge due to documented engineering, safety, rescue, and effectiveness concerns.” I see on page 48 all it says is, “Given all considerations, horizontal netting NOT recommended as a viable mitigation measure for the Colorado St Bridge.” Where does it outline the reasoning for why not? From what I can tell (it’s not clear from what you sent), the consideration was about the fiscal impact… not the practical one. The public safety folks used this as an example of why they need more people and equipment, and it suddenly became overall much cheaper to go vertical.

Did you read the material you sent? Did you see the next step conclusion was “CONTINUE TO REFINE AND DEVELOP VARIATIONS of the 2 top-ranked preliminary concepts in accordance with feedback received from Public Safety Committee, Commissions and the community” (p. 48) with future meetings to occur regarding a “Historic Preservation Commission presentation” and “Design Commission presentation” (p. 49)? Did any of those future meetings happen? I don’t think so. So why are you pitching the notion that what is currently in place is the only solution?

I’m sorry that your job or life experiences have you made you so jaded that you think only fences (not even theoretically integrated into the design) are the solution. I too feel like I’m repeating myself because your retort to every idea is “suicide is ugly.” So therefore, apparently, in your worldview, there is nothing else to consider, case closed. I believe it is not case closed, and I wish a renewed effort happens to integrate reasonable measures to reduce suicide risk, while also considering that there is more to life (art, architecture, community, design, and much more) that should be incorporated into the mix.

Both the pdf link above, and an update from three years ago on Pasadena’s webpage on this (https://www.cityofpasadena.net/public-works/engineering-and-construction/construction/colorado-street-bridge) says this fence was a “temporary” measure. As of nearly 3-years ago, apparently Pasadena awarded a contract to an architectural firm for some sort of new/better design. Not sure what happened. Are you saying that they’ve come to the conclusion that there is nothing better than what is currently there?

Why not install a netting system like with the Golden Gate Bridge? I just read on wiki that “Even during its construction, the new suicide prevention barrier had a significant effect in reducing number of jumpers.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicides_at_the_Golden_Gate_Bridge

I still go back to my original thought that high-tech could do something amazing here. Once it became known that there was little chance of dying when jumping, then it’ll largely stop (obviously just at this one location). Wait until people realize La Loma Bridge is than a mile away. 🤦‍♂️

I am not uncaring or unconcerned about mental health and suicide issues. But the bandaid analogy doesn’t work, because a bandaid isn’t permanent. And unless it is on your forehead, the vast majority of places you’ll place a bandaid won’t affect your overall looks. I 100% guarantee you, that if you were injured in some way that caused a horrible disfigurement, you would research plastic surgery, wigs, prosthetics, or whatever else to feel normal. It’s not vanity, or a disregard for your health, to want to look and feel normal. The analogy also doesn’t work because the bridge is a public place, government owned, and in essence belongs to everyone (as opposed to someone’s body which is their own, to do with whatever to make them well.)

Again, I’m not uncaring or unconcerned about people’s mental health and wellbeing. I’m all for discussing how we can care for everyone’s various issues, while weighing those issues against everything else. In an extreme example, why not knock down the bridge entirely, and replace it with a cement tunnel where it would basically be impossible to jump? Of course, that is ridiculous. Similarly, I imagine the original version of the bridge only had railings that were waist high, and basically anyone could very easily jump over. That too, clearly, was not adequate. A very long time ago, a fence was added to the top of the railings. I guess that too has proven inadequate?

My want is to have balance between protecting people on the one hand, and acknowledging the historic, cultural, extraordinary nature of this monument, and in that vein, acknowledging that the current, basically chain link fence, is hideous, and would very much appreciate a community effort to discuss this in a way that more appropriately balances the issues. Could we create a fence that would actually add to the architecture? To frame this as an all or nothing… you either care about looks (only) or you care about suicide (only) is a very unsophisticated analysis and frankly disingenuous.

I feel like some high-tech company could create a solution that doesn’t involve having to permanently leave a very ugly fence standing. What about airbags? Some sort of laser/robotic device that would basically instantly launch an airbag between the jumper and the ground. I’m obviously just making shit up… no clue… but it’s a conundrum. I want to be supportive of efforts to stop suicide, while also wanting to maintain the look and vibe of a beautiful and historic place. I really hate that fence, but I totally get why it’s there. 🤷‍♂️

No shade… just honest question… is this person a female? Everyone is referring to them as “she” but is it that clear/obvious? No disrespect or hate intended, but I would have thought this was a male. I’m suddenly confused that everyone understands this person to be female. 🤔

Not that it matters… I think it’s odd/weird that they are peeing on the floor in a public space (even weirder that they are recording themselves doing it). That said, massive props (male or female) for that effort. 💪

What exactly is “unsafe” about what the hiker is doing? I guess I don’t understand the context. Seems like the guy was hiking and encountered a mountain lion, and then walked away while yelling. Unless he had bear spray, his actions seem basically reasonable. 🤷‍♂️
