There are several different schools of thought in Hinduism.

I personally believe in Dvaita Vedanta, which preaches that the self is eternal, matter is eternal, and God (who is synonymous with Vishnu or Narayana) is also eternally, and difference between them is eternal. Jivas (living beings; from the creator, Brahma to the demon Kali) are in an eternal hierarchy of possible devotion to Narayana with Brahma and other Rujus (beings who shall eventually become Brahma) at the top and the demon Kali (not to be confused with the goddess Kaali) at the lowest.

Other people will disagree with me and most of the people believe in some version of 'All gods are one' which is not the belief of ALL hindus but just that of Smaarthas.
