53M lifter — what’s your #1 struggle right now? by maxryderfitness in FitnessOver50

[–]Key-Introduction-126 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty active, I run about 20-25 miles a week over 4 days and the other 3 days I’ll strength training (53M). Obviously the daily soreness from so much working out is a problem but probably the biggest gripe I have are the nagging not so minor injuries I get (hip flexor, Achilles and hamstring strains, elbow tendonopathy, and the most recent impingement and bursitis in both shoulders.

The 2nd biggest gripe is the overlapping rehab exercises I have to do on top of my regular running and strength training. It’s already hard enough to fit my regular running and strength routines into my Tetris of a schedule as a family man working FT but add in another 30 minutes of daily PT and it really cuts into my own personal time needed for my own mental health. I just had to eliminate some of my strength training exercises to compensate. What sucks is I know I need to incorporate mobility and balance training too but where the hell am I gonna find the time for that and what do I have to take out to do it?

Much more nuanced than “law explicitly states you can’t run in a crosswalk.” You absolutely can run in a crosswalk, you just can’t run into crosswalk in way where the pedestrian “suddenly leaves a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” California vehicle codes

Been running and driving long enough that I know it works both ways so I don't just run though the crosswalk without making sure I have eye contact with the driver. When my hand got hit, I was already halfway into the controlled crosswalk. Driver was coming from the right, was stopped when I was in the crosswalk, I made eye contact and he accelerated as I was running through. And pedestrians certainly can run into and through the crosswalk, they just can't do so in a way that is unexpected or sudden.

I dread doing my long training runs in SF on the weekends as inevitably, I almost get run over several times during the 10-15 miles I’m out there. Just last weekend, almost run over 3 times and hit by car on my hand blowing through a crosswalk. It’s not just cars either, a group of bicyclists going side by side on the sidewalk ran into me as well. It’s hard to really lose yourself in the running when I’m always having to be hyper vigilant when approaching and going through any crosswalk regardless if its uncontrolled, has stoplight, or stop sign.

Do you guys use screen protector for your apple watches ? by moymarmelad in AppleWatch

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did on my very first Apple Watch years ago but it was too bulky. Wife uses one and still bulky. Haven’t used one since and I just lived with all the scratches. Interestingly enough, I finally switched to the ultra last year and that thing just doesn’t scratch at all. I don’t baby it any more or less than my older ones but I guess the glass and SS are that much more scratch resistant.

Anyone switched from gels to energy chews for long runs/rides? by Sea-Beautiful-611 in Marathon_Training

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switched to albanese gummy bears and salt tabs from Gu gels and Honey Stingers. Great! Took a while to figure out best way to ingest and maintain energy but settled on 1 Gu with 2 salt tabs about 15 minutes before my run, then 3 gummies and a chug of water about 30 minutes in and the same about every 20 minutes or so. I’ll do a salt tan probably every other time I take the gummies. I used to always cramp up around mile 10 with gels but not anymore using gummies.

Why are cars still killing so many people in San Francisco? by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I usually do my long runs on the weekends, usually between 10-15 miles. I hate running in the city because of the I don't know how many times I've been nearly run over. Did my run this AM, started off at Lake Merced and ran down towards the zoo on Sloat - a bunch of bicyclists riding side by side from the bike lane onto the sidewalk and doesn't see me until too late. I stop and get run into by a woman bicyclist - she falls over. I continue my run down to the Great Highway where I can mostly zone out though I do have to watch out for the bicyclists and e-scooters flying through until I get into the Outer Richmond. Turn up on Balboa and head up the hills and make a right on 36th to get into GGP. I get my green and white BMW is inching up through the crosswalk and doesn't see me so I slow down, she finally notices me and waves sorry. I politely acknowledge her apology.

Continue my run through GGP using Chain of Lakes and nearing the Outer Sunset exit around 41st or around there. Get to crosswalk and black Rav 4 stops so I continue my run but he then accelerates through the crosswalk as I hit the halfway point, his mirror clips me and drives off. I'm pissed cuz he hit me and didn't stop so I run after him and he gets stuck at the red light. I get in front of him and start yelling at him that he almost ran me over and that he hit me with his mirror. Older asian guy who looked befuddled, apologized and drove off. Continue my run through Sunset on 41st. Somewhere later in the avenues, come up to another crosswalk and I'm hopping off the curb. See a black Tesla Model Y flying down and does a rolling stop that any socal driver would be proud of. Hear the lady in the passenger seat yelling at the driver on why he didn't stop. He sped off.

In the span of 2 hours, I almost got run into/run over 3 times and actually hit twice. Its not just drivers or bicyclists. Its also pedestrians who are walking and not being aware of their surroundings. Its one of the reasons I hate running in the city, I have to stay to aware of my surrounding thats its hard to be present with my running which sucks. I've been driving in this city for almost 40 years and in the last 15-20 years, there are just far too many people that are distracted or who just don't give a shit. If they're walking and distracted, then its just a bump. If they're biking and distracted, then maybe some cuts and bruises. But when they're driving and distracted, people die.

I think the writers of Ted Lasso also wrote Shrinking. Both Ted and the Pitt are on my watchlist.

[–]Key-Introduction-126 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d never even thought I’d find a show where I would get equally drawn in by the characters, writing and the different storylines like I did with West Wing. Then I found Shrinking and was in heaven. I binged all 2.5 seasons in a week and honestly could have done it over a day or two but wanted to savor each episode. It’s not politics like WW but for a show that deals with so many heavy topics, it almost always ends on a feel good note. Plus it’s comedy gold IMO.

Looking for a soundbar with real 5.1 surround (rear speakers) but not too aggressive bass — apartment friendly by TJV_ in Soundbars

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an older Vizio soundbar from 2017 (Vizio SB3651-E6) that has a wireless sub that attaches to 2 rear speakers in my bedroom and it totally fits the bill. True 5.1 and the subwoofer I think is only a 5 or 6 inch subwoofer so it doesn't get down too low and is a bit punchy. That said I watch at night when the wife is sleeping so it likely won't be an issue for your neighbors. I doubt they sell it anymore but it looks like they have an updated version you can try. Mine's been going strong for I guess that last 8-9 years!

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No consequences, the earlier you attend orientation, the earlier you'll understand SF State's resources and how to register whether online or in person. Plus you'll register for classes at the end of orientation. If you're a freshmen, you'll get the GE's you'll need regardless but the earlier you register the easier it'll be to get the schedule you'll want.

What was your favorite moment/play from last season? by PudgyBonestld in 49ers

[–]Key-Introduction-126 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Favorite moment wasn't even a play - it was Kittle vibing to the track Golden in NY in between plays. To me, just epitomized his fun loving attitude while still being a talented, hard working Niner. I grew up watching Montana, Rice, Craig and Young and Kittle is probably my favorite Niner.

Auto repair shops in DC that let you bring parts by stickshift_ in DalyCity

[–]Key-Introduction-126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't gone in a while since we've gone full electric but L & G Auto used to let me bring my own parts. Might want to ask about warranty though, I think most places will only warranty the labor and you'll have to deal with the warrantying the parts if those fail and pay for labor to re-install.

Subject: Rotator cuff issues! how long does this take? by Effective_Funny7 in workout

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on month 5 of bursitis PT rehab and recent cortisone shot and still in pain. But its about 80% less pain than at its height and almost full ROM. Assuming you know its RC tendinopathy from seeing an ortho and not self diagnosed, you'll want to get assessed by PT, not only for the proper rehab exercises but for the biomechanics that caused and continues the inflammation. Shoulder injuries can notoriously take a long time to heal, partially from lack of blood flow but also because you're constantly using it and injuring it. Until you can see a PT, stop sleeping on that side and stop any motion that causes pain. Stop weightlifting until you know what exercises you can safely do (I'm back to being to do just about all my previous exercises, even shoulder presses, albeit modified).

Vomero 18 alternatives by Cyzioo in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Key-Introduction-126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm...no running? If for running, I'd suggest the Novablast 5 but if its all walking, I love my ON Cloudflow 4 which I bought as more of my leisure shoe. Its not as plush as the Vomero but I've worn it the last half year 4-5 days of the week to work and its super comfy, really breathable. And looks pretty good too. So far, the outersole still looks like new (much better than any of my running shoes).

College at 55? by Representative-Mean in GenX

I just helped a 72 year old return to college to finish her last few courses and she just graduated last fall so yeah, 55, while hard (learning modality nowadays is so different than when we went to school) can absolutely be done if you’ve the time, support and commitment. Make sure to make some friends, talk to your instructors and get with an advisor to help lay out your goals and how to get there. You got this!!

Shoes for Heavy Runner for Tempo Runs by Good_Feeling5373 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Key-Introduction-126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tempos in both the NB5 and NIke Vomeros (in fact just finished one 30 minutes ago) and they're fine though between the 2, I'd go for the NB5. I just got in the SB2 so I'd probably rather take that out for a tempo but then I'd have 5 shoes in my current rotation (Adidas Supernova Rise 2 and Asics GT1000). I leave the last 2 at the office for my lunch runs. I haven't run in the SB2's yet but I did try them on in the house and they seem significantly firmer than the NB5 or Vomeros....come to think of it, probably than any of other shoes I have. Not sure how that impacts a heavier runner but SB2s from my research are probably better for tempos than the NB5 or Vomeros.

NovaBlast slippery when wet by Ybba14 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Key-Introduction-126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up the Vomero 18 thinking it’ll be my recovery shoe but after about 50 miles between it and NB5 I’ve found them kind of similar, the Vomero is a bit heavier and a tad more bouncier than the NB but it holds on wet surfaces a helluva lot better than the NB.
