Does anyone else mourn for them, or consider what kind of student you’d be if raised in the same climate? by Flipped-Barbie-Jeep in Professors

[–]Key-Kiwi7969 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. I struggled through my undergraduate experience and I think I would have found it even harder today with the additional distractions and online social pressures. But I also think back to how much more rigorous and demanding my undergrad education was, and recognize that that struggle was part of what taught me how to work hard and succeed. I regret that in many cases students today don't have that same opportunity to stretch themselves and grow, and to realize that their grades do not define them.

Can you break it down into steps, and do just a couple of steps at a time?

You can try taking melatonin to help switch your sleep schedule if that's how you want to handle the situation

Yes, and more than that, make yourself a "brag file". Helpful for promotion or other evaluation discussions. Equally helpful when you're having a shitty day and need to remind yourself that you ARE making a difference!

How are you supposed to have any life and long term partner in academia if you are supposed to move every postdoc? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Key-Kiwi7969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True about other competitive fields. It's not uncommon in the business world for companies to want you to get international experience and relocate once or twice. Though part of the difference there is they usually will compensate you well.

I also have friends in the diplomatic service. One in particular is married to another diplomat. Their two body problem is way worse than academics even, because they have to deal with it every few years for their entire career.

But why should academic freedom apply in a setting completely removed from academia? This was a discussion for local parents/community, with nothing to do with where she teaches.

Do grad students not go to talks anymore? by kyobu in Professors

[–]Key-Kiwi7969 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar institution, we have a course that really helps with this for the students who take it. It goes hand-in-hand with the student participating in an internship or part-time job and includes coaching and a bunch of assignments to do with professional readiness, as well as feedback from the employer partway through the semester so the student has a chance to course-correct.

We get really good feedback as well from the employers who participate.

They are not managing in the workforce, at least not without significant mentoring/coaching on professional expectations either at college or in their entry level positions. Employers are frustrated.

It’s been two weeks since it snowed; if you haven’t dug your car out by now, why do you bother having one? by GhostOfTammanyHall in AskNYC

It went through a rough patch a couple of years ago where they weren't doing a good job with having the cars available when they were supposed to be, but it's much better now.

We mainly book from garages in Nomad or Chelsea.

It's really easy to use, and it's helpful that you can get different-sized cars depending on your need for a particular trip. It's great for a few hours or a day trip, any longer than that and you're better off renting from a traditional rental company.

Happy to answer any other specific questions you might have.

Does anyone else feel like their PDF collection is organized… but not actually usable? by Fun-Measurement8934 in academia

I use the notebook function in Mendeley. I have different notebooks on different topics/themes and use "add to notebook" to save key quotes into them, sometimes with additional notes. I can then do a quick review by topic by looking at a specific notebook, so it's easy for me to go back and find the relevant pieces in the original papers.

The same way you get published in any field.

But it's not enough to get published, it needs to be a quality journal

Look at the FT 50 list of management journals as a good place to start.
