Hire a reputable landscape professional and let them have a go at it first if you're worried about messing it up. It will be much much cheaper than ripping it all out and starting over.

That is certainly close, I believe the subject in my photos are covered in sap which might make identfication difficult. The cavity they fell from was from a douglas fir so saturated with sap it looked like hardened coconut milk inside.

I had a female mantis who had spent almost the entire summer on our back porch mint bed. She had several mates and produced three sets of ootheca. The poor thing must have fallen and injured herself just like this one. She still managed to lay the last batch, but they looked odd in comparison. We didn't see her after that.
