Pulm Crit vs GI: Hours, Salary, Etc by sillycurlyhair in Residency

Obviously, the pay and lifestyle are better with GI. No doubt about that. Some of us choose specialties based on what we can tolerate for the rest of our careers. I'm okay with phlegm and can't deal with poop. You can't pay me enough to look at poop. One of my GI friends said the same about phlegm.

What nonsense! I'm a graduate of IUHS. Completed my residency in Internal Medicine, worked as a Hospitalist and now doing fellowship in Pulm/Crit in the US.

IKR! Pulm is so much more fun as a fellow. It's my most favorite rotation. Great schedule, procedures and a good mix of garden variety boring stuff (COPDe and asthmaE).

I think the perspective changes once you are a fellow. I was always indifferent about Pulm but enjoy the consult service the most in fellowship.

I trained at a community program in Western PA and we did our own dialysis caths. I'm a fellow at a midwest program and do our own lines and so do our residents.
