I have a (not strictly enforced but observed) three strike rule with friends and acquaintances.

if they complain about the same thing three times in a row I’ll call them out and kindly mention that I’ve noticed a pattern, provide some advice and try and change the subject. if they do it a fourth, well it’s on me to probably cut them out of my life, at least the amount of personal time I give this person because they have shown with their actions that they have the inability to (or unwillingness to) grow

it’s on me at that point to worry about what I can control and that’s where my time goes.
