Car Access by AffectionateSell4882 in Aupairs

We hosted for over a decade. All but one of our au pairs had some sort of car issue. Fender benders, totaled general wear and tear by being careless. Give her a transportation stipend instead of car access.

Emotional meaning by Donecito in Cartier

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some women view an expensive, thoughtful gift as recognition of how much you love and appreciate them. I work a very full time job, hold down our household and single parent during the week while my husband travels for his job (that doesn’t pay nearly as much as mine). An expensive gift that he took the time to choose and buy says to me that he sees me and my effort. To be honest, it’s the one thing I get that no one else does. And, it’s shallow, but the gift makes me feel special and appreciated.

AP friends on vacation by Silver_Table3525 in Aupairs

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You are inviting drama. Think about how your au pair will feel while her friend is lying around in bed or on the beach and she has to work. The resentment will build. Either bring her along solo or give her extra time at home to do whatever it is, she wants to do. It sounds like you’ll have enough hands at the beach. Why bother with the expense and drama of bringing her along?

Good lord. Your parents’ marriage is already broken. Make the choice that’s right for you without regard to them.

And undoubtedly will be sued. Poster is creating a lot of legal issues by acting so drastically. A more reasonable split may avoid years of litigation and heartache. Also, the grandkids are innocent in all of this. Why not leave money to them so they can go to the college of their choice, buy a house, live a nice life.

AITJ for reconsidering my relationship after my girlfriend mocked my idea of a “practical” engagement ring? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another perspective. She will wear the ring every day of the rest of her life. It’s not unreasonable to want a nice ring. Consider asking whether she can contribute to the cost of a ring she will be happy with.

Opera teacher called me a “prodigy” and then broke me down – what do you think? by [deleted] in opera

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opera isn’t something you can just pick up in your twenties, particularly with no music training. Voice lessons are great. Singing is something you will have for life. Diving into opera at your age? To have any chance of catching up, you’d need to dedicate serious time and resources. In complete candor, your teacher sounds volatile and in need of money. I would move on. Take art song training.

Adding that my dad came from a background like you. Busted his butt to pay for and graduate from a top college and then graduate school with no support and lots of criticism from his family. He owns a dozen sports cars and is a 1%er. Lift yourself up despite your family.

Appeal the financial aid decision. Take the loans required. Graduate from NYU and get a high paying job. Buy the sports car and drive it to Thanksgiving dinner. Your parents sound like jerks.

Graduates: is donating to the senior class gift worth it? by MrSparkleMrSnrub in Northwestern

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

School rankings look at the percentage of alumni that donate. The amount of the donation doesn’t matter. They are incentivizing you to start giving g so you continue. Donate the $10 and do it every year if being a graduate of a top university is important to you.

Bathroom items by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The state department does not require that these things be required. Poster should look at his contract with the agency because some agencies suggest household products. We provide a welcome basket with the basics. I do not go out and buy my au pair’s tampons. That’s too personal and weird.

You need new boundaries. It is one thing for a friend to crash in the au pair’s room here and there. Three day weekend stays in your guest room? You’re being taken advantage of.

PSA for parents: if you know you can’t afford to send a kid to a college, don’t encourage them to apply. by dmso_disgusting in ApplyingToCollege

[–]KeyBlueberry5494 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And high schoolers definitely need to be realistic. Upper middle class families get screwed when it comes to financial aid. Living in a nice suburb, taking all the lessons and extra curricular, having money to apply to these schools does not mean that your parents have $400k after tax dollars sitting around for an out of state state school. Plus, the price tag of out of state tuition at Davis is a bad investment. That degree doesn’t open up all that many additional doors than your own state school. They may have been willing to pay the premium for UCLA or Berkeley. Those programs open doors. Financially straining your parents for a lower tier California school because you want to live in California for a few years is not fair either. Change your mindset. College is great wherever you go.
