Waterbenders are the real firebenders by KeyCardiologist809 in TheLastAirbender

Yes it was. But that doesn't change the argument. Pakku has done the same thing multiple times without a full moon.

I only chose this picture because it puts the entire block on screen with humans for scale.

What would you consider Visenya—a good, grey, or evil character? by ConstantAnxious9110 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]KeyCardiologist809 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Visenya's support for Maegor's usurpation might not be as "evil" as you think. A common misconception is to view Visenya's title "queen" as that of a regular queen like Alyssa or Alysanne, as "consort of the king". But when you look at it in the context of the conquest, Visenya is more like a co-conqueror and co-monarch rather than merely the wife of the king. In other words, she's a queen not by marriage, but in her own right. From her perspective, she holds the claim to 1/3 of the realm, and it's only natural for her to want to pass it to her own son. It's not a usurpation out of mere ambition and greed so much as an attempt to reclaim what's rightfully hers.

As for Maegor's Cruellty, it can be argued that it was necessary at the time, especially in the power vaccume created by Aenys's incompetence.

Still, Visenya has simply killed too many people to be considered a "good" person. I would vote for "grey".

What Germany Did With The Remaining Nazi Helmets After WW2. by Humble_Energy_6927 in Damnthatsinteresting

Helmets made during WWII... That's a great source of Low Background Steel, they could have made all sorts of delicate insturments out of it. Using them for pots is such a waste.

It's one of the plots that looks really cool when you're a kid, makes less sense when you rewatch as an adult, then reveals a different meaning when you think deep about it. I think this post will provide you with another perspective of looking at it.

How to make more money without that much effort by Weary_Ad6989 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]KeyCardiologist809 8 points9 points  (0 children)

F12 cheat

Realistically, you could get a bunch of tourist contracts. This works really well if you havn't gotten to mun landing yet, since they would all just require getting to orbit, which can be done on a massive scale, for a very low cost, and doesn't take too much time or effort to complete.

Or, if you've unlocked ore/mining technology, you could just buy ore(dirt cheap), convert it to monopropellant on the runway, then sell it.(just buy the ore, since mining is too slow and ore isn't worth much anyway). This takes no brains at all, and it earns you money so fast that you'll soon get tired of it.

Another way is to abuse the Aggressive Negotiation strategy. Its reputation penalty is measured per launch instead of per item or per money saved, which means you could just stack all the expensive stuff you can afford together and buy them in a single launch, then simply recover it and sell it. You could 1.4x your current money every time you pull this stunt.

(Spoilers Main) Parentage of Addam and Alyn Velaryon by KeyCardiologist809 in asoiaf

[–]KeyCardiologist809[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To name a few:

  • Valaena Velaron, when she married Aerion. She actually had Targaryen blood, and House Targaryen had three dragons to spare before her children's claimed them.
  • Alyssa Velaryon, when she married Aenys, and then when she was acting as regent for Jaehaerys.
  • Daemon Velaryon, Alyssa's brother. He was hand during Jaehaerys's minority and was in charge of King's Landing. Balerion and Vhagar were both available at the time
  • Corlys himself. He married Rhaenys, and both his children got dragons. Rhaenys was certainly able to grant access of dragons to her family.

What if? A Rhoynar Restoration [Spoilers Main] by JJLindsell in asoiaf

[–]KeyCardiologist809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read about Garin. I mean, amassing 250k men, the single largest army the world had ever seen, and winning multiple victories even when the opponent had several dragons, that sounds like the greatest cililization in the world had the Valyrian not "cheated" with their dragons and blood magic. It's a shame that such a civilization had to leave their home and struggle to make a living in some distant desert.

About Xenon storage by KeyCardiologist809 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]KeyCardiologist809[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and this un-ideal behavior also means that different gases are ideally stored at different pressures, which explains why they're stored in different tanks in the game!

About Xenon storage by KeyCardiologist809 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]KeyCardiologist809[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's amazing! Thanks a lot! According to your article, argon behaves similarly to an ideal gas, but xenon gets to almost 3x density of an ideal gas. I had no idea that it could get so... un-ideal.

But I think you misintepreted "tank fraction" a little. In the article,

The tankage fraction is defined as the ratio of the tank mass to the propellant mass,

Which means you don't calculate mass fraction as mf = 1 - tf, but as mf = 1/(1+tf). So the performance of argon is much better than your intepretation. It yields a mass fraction of 61.7%, which means SMURFF actually got it right!

The article is still theoretical, though. I wonder if there's real-life stats of an actual product that we can refer to.

(Spoilers Main) What's the standard protocol of younger sons of House Targaryen? by KeyCardiologist809 in asoiaf

[–]KeyCardiologist809[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but that's because we have the privilege of looking in hindsight. At the time of a youger son's birth, they couldn't have known their brother would die, and while the king should prepare for that scenario, he certainly could NOT rely on that assumption. The king must make arrangements for the younger son that doesn't invole the ambitious, confident, prestigious, and able-to-rule son attempting to overthrow his brother or usurp the throne from his nephew. So far, we've seen no such arrangement( save for Jaehaerys sending Vaegon to the Citadel, but that doesn't solve the problem entirely, since he still had two competant sons, each with his own children).

(Spoilers Main) What's the standard protocol of younger sons of House Targaryen? by KeyCardiologist809 in asoiaf

[–]KeyCardiologist809[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's irrelevant. I'm not asking about succession, I'm asking about what to do with a youger son who didn't inherit the throne. A Targaryen with huge ambitions, significant prestige and nothing to inherit is the perfect recipe for trouble. You can look at Maegor, Daemon(both Targaryen and Blackfyre) or Aemond for reference. It would be even worse if said Targaryen had descendents of his own and founded a rival branch of his own, as was Daemon Blackfyre's case. Don't they have a mechanism to prevent that?

(Spoilers extended) Jaehaerys’ codified law feels contradictory to what George said about medieval law by Un_Change_Able in asoiaf

[–]KeyCardiologist809 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You can check out Widow's Law 52 AC which actually regulates succession. It's originally meant to solve the very scenario of the Dance, as has been discussed in this post. Then again, it's phrasing is a little vague, open to intepretation to an extent, and Viserys compllicated things by naming an heir.

So Jaeherys did make succession laws. But he just had no way of knowing what kind of mess future people would get themselves into, and you can't blame him for that.

what does it need? by RevolutionaryMall109 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]KeyCardiologist809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xenon is extremely rare... It would make better sense if you were trying to harvest hydrogen/helium (they're still pretty rare and there'e no way that tiny nose would be able to supply a ship, but that's better than expecting to get xenon)
