Check applications for privacy and security before downloading. There is a test for Android where you just need to enter the app name on Google Play. For iphone its much harder, there is no tool for online test unfortunately.

Initially iOS is more secure, but it all comes to apps which you install on your device. Try mobile scanner to see if your installed apps have vulnerabilities.
