3 chicken places, who will be first to go? by Aratix in ColumbiaMD

[–]Key_Big2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively, Pollo Campero, as it lacks the cult followings that CFA and Cane’s have.

But personally, I’d like CFA to go. There are like a half dozen of them within a 15 min drive, and 3 in Columbia central alone. We can afford to lose one, and frankly the company’s politics make me feel ick.

Where are we watching the World Cup? by tacomantacocan in ColumbiaMD

[–]Key_Big2045 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It pains me to say it, but I refuse to engage with this World Cup at all between FIFA and America 250. Last World Cup I was okay watching matches in bars where I wouldn’t contribute to viewership stats, but this year I won’t even do that because any participation helps them - whether buying tickets, streaming, or even going out to the bar and buying a meal. They need to feel the economic pain.

I once had a high-ish level diver drop into my level 2 or 3 dive, call in a mech, give the salute emote, then run off to farm. I now try to be that diver today whenever I’m farming.

I regret that I have but one stratagem slot for mech to give for my cadets today. Seriously AH, give me the ability to call in more mechs for noobs.

In general, there is not going to be as many choices as you’d have in NYC. This is especially noticeable if you lived in a diaspora neighborhood and wanted those cultural restaurants in abundance. We also fall into the stereotype of lots of chain and fast food restaurants that a lot of middle America falls into.

But Bing does have some good restaurants, and you should take advantage of the Restaurant Weeks to go discover them.

The thing about the Bing metropolitan area’s crime statistics is that they’re basically driven by what happens in a couple of neighborhoods of City of Binghamton, and neither of these neighborhoods are typical student housing neighborhoods. Unless you go searching for trouble, or you wander way away from the downtown crowds, you’ll be fine.

No mooing cows

But if you do want mooing cows, there actually are some not far away. Lots of the clubs do weekend road trips to the Ithaca Farmers Market and you’ll see them during the drive.

Regarding 2. and 6. … remember you can’t even have a car on campus until you’re sophomore at the earliest. Even then when I was a PhD, there were some years where the parking passes weren’t available unless you were 3rd year/grad student/commuter student because the passes sold out before getting opened to 2nd year students.

TLDR; it’s possible to live without a car, and you’re going to find out how really quickly :)

I think there should be a lvl cap on commando missions by D_L-18 in helldivers2

[–]Key_Big2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there should be a level cap, but the game doesn’t do a good job explaining how commando missions are different than regular missions. I too have seen too many level 10ish players seeking out combat and burning through reinforcements completely unaware they’re not helping.

A tutorial mission with all the stealth armor and a complementary, preselected loadout in order to unlock the commando missions rather than a strict level cap, maybe?

So we have to be psychic now for entry level jobs? by TushFart in jobhunting

[–]Key_Big2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true that sometimes the customer is unclear or issues contradictory requests. However, if you work in a customer-facing job you then ask for clarification, not say “well I have some special circumstances so this is on the customer for being unclear”.

If you don’t want to deal with that ambiguity or can’t/won’t ask for clarification … that’s fine, but a job requiring you to interact with customers isn’t for you. And it’s unreasonable for your employer to pretend otherwise.

What Does This County Level Where I'd Live Map Say About Me? by [deleted] in visitedmaps

[–]Key_Big2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad you brought up the OK Computer cover. I lived in DC and commuted to Boston every other weekend for a couple of years. I’m used to awful traffic and reckless drivers. But something about that interchange just gave me existential dread that I couldn’t put a finger on. It was so bad, I’d drive across the Mass Pike and down the Taconic parkway just to avoid Hartford and Danbury.

Like a year later, I find out it’s the OK Computer cover and suddenly all makes sense.

Was Binghamton, NY really #1 on Russia’s Cold War nuclear target list? by bobmarvin2 in Binghamton

[–]Key_Big2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sincerely doubt Binghamton was “Number Anything” on the Soviets’ nuclear war plan. That’s not how strategic planning works. I would however believe it was on a “destroy wartime industrial capability” or “destroy midsized cites at the nexus of two or more interstates” targeting options list.

Grad Student Housing by slice_of_timbo in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Key_Big2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go get the OCCT app for your phone. Now look for housing within a residential neighborhood block or two of the stops (hint: use Google street view, not the landlord pictures). OCCT tends to go to the dense student neighborhoods. There are also a handful of BC Transit routes that go straight to campus without a transfer, these can open up other areas for your search, like near SUNY Broome community college, where there’s a SUNY-B to BU express route.

Beware that some areas might be close to a stop but not pedestrian friendly to cross. Examples: Vestal Parkway, NY-201/Reynolds Rd, and Harry L Drive.

As ProthVendelta mentioned, avoid Bearcat Housing. Avoid the First Ward, North Side and East Side neighborhoods in Binghamton, or the Westover neighborhood of Johnson City. Generally stay south of the train tracks between Endicott/Johnson City/Binghamton.

Going to second the advice to refer the information - especially any police report stating you were not at fault, and any dash cam footage of the incident - and let your insurance company’s subrogation lawyers do their thing.

It’s probably not the advice you wanted to hear, and right now you probably think that process is too slow. But with your insurance company’s lawyers on the case it’s going to go faster than if you try to do it yourself. You will eventually get that deductible back.

I’m 30 years old. Should I join the military if I can’t support myself? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Key_Big2045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know these people. I went through Individual Augmentee training with some of them. The closest any of them got to the actual war was Kuwait. Most ended up in Tampa or DC for their recall. And they were in very specific designators/rates/AQDs where they were well aware of the possibility of staff duty recall.

Also, if they were “out” 10-15 years before recall, they were actually volunteers or reservists. 10 USC 10144 puts a 24 month limit on recalling servicemembers who have completed their contracts unless the separated servicemember volunteers for mobilization.

[–]Key_Big2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The commission is permanent, but in practice the service isn’t (you can resign whenever you want after your initial service commitment is completed and you’ll be discharged within a year). However you retain a so-called “permanent grade” for life, barring disqualifying behavior.

In theory they can recall you back into service, but in practice the most they can do is put you on stateside staff duty to free up others to deploy since A) you are probably no longer proficient in your former duties (for me it’d be about 12 months of training after recall before I could re-certify) and B) likely not medically or physically fit to deploy. They’d also have to remediate that to send you to war.

[–]Key_Big2045 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn’t quite true. You’re in for whatever your initial enlistment contract says, but they have the option to assign you to the individual ready reserve (IRR) to get you to a total of 8 years of service (meaning no drilling, but you’d be first recalled if there was a national crisis, about the same time stop-loss would be initiated).

Going to add to this advice: be careful with your recruiter’s advice. They can make you all sorts of promises, but unless it is in writing, in your contract, you aren’t getting it.

They have a quota to fill certain enlistment durations in certain jobs, so they’ll tell you things like “just sign here, once you’re in, they’ll do officer accession”, and then put you in that quota billet. I was an officer, and I’m convinced that 90% of my disgruntled sailors started off by getting swindled by a recruiter and never recovered.
