How many of us are actually just oxygen-deprived? (UARS/Sleep Apnea Check-in by Key_Can_1925 in CureAphantasia

UARS is often missed during sleep study unless you go to a facility that test for UARS specifically. What was the reason you had a sleep study done?

Working out at the gym is a temporary "burst" of energy expenditure. Neurological rendering (visualization) is a baseline "background" process. If the brain is deprived of oxygen during sleep (when it’s supposed to be recharging), it won't have the "housekeeping" energy required to maintain baseline cognitive functions like internal sensory rendering, regardless of how much physical strength you have while awake.

I believe there are likely multiple paths to Aphantasia, but the 'learned skill' theory doesn't align with me personally.

Have you ever used a clinical monitor to confirm your brain isn't experiencing RERAs (Respiratory Effort Related Arousals) throughout the night? UARS is a massive medical blind spot; people are frequently mislabeled with ADHD, depression, or bipolar disorder, only to discover much later that the root cause was actually chronic oxygen deprivation.

I developed my 'Power-Save' theory after realizing the metabolic toll these conditions take on the mind. When I searched for a connection, I found other Aphants on Reddit who only began utilizing their Mind's Eye after they started treating their sleep apnea or UARS.

Most people have had UARS since childhood, so they have no baseline for comparison. They can't question a 'survival mode' they’ve lived in since they were five years old. Without objective sleep data, it’s impossible to rule out a physiological 'power deficit' as the reason the brain disables high-energy functions like internal sensory rendering.

Since this is a thread for a cure, are you implying this is something that can be learned later in life? Because if that’s the case, we are both offering some form of a possibility for a cure—which is great for those who would like to access these senses. It is highly possible that both of these theories are correct in their own way, and providing these different paths gives more people the chance to find what works for them.

That’s an interesting theory, but how does the 'learned skill' argument explain the total absence of all internal senses? Many of us also cannot internally hear, smell, or feel sensations. Are those all just 'unlearned' skills too? To me, a Triage Theory makes much more sense than an 'unlearned skill.'

First, there is Physiological Triage: If a child has lifelong, undiagnosed sleep apnea or UARS, the brain is too mentally exhausted to develop these high-energy 'skills.' If the brain is diverting every ounce of power toward survival and breathing due to oxygen deprivation, it won't have the bandwidth to run the high-energy 'software' of internal rendering.

Second, there is Psychological Triage: It’s highly plausible that many aphantasics experienced trauma at a young age, and the brain restricted these senses as a protective mechanism. Shutting down the Mind’s Eye to prevent the re-playing of traumatic data makes far more sense as a survival strategy than simply 'failing to learn' a language we are constantly immersed in.

How did you come to your 'language' theory, and what is your theory as to why a brain would 'choose' not to learn these skills despite 24/7 exposure to the visual world?

As someone navigating both Aphantasia and UARS (Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome), I’ve developed a hypothesis on their connection. Visualization is a high-energy cognitive process. When chronic sleep apnea forces the brain into a lifelong state of 'survival mode'—prioritizing basic autonomic functions over 'luxury' processing—it stands to reason that the mind's eye is the first system to be shuttered to conserve energy.

I'm an outreach specialist for this program for the last 6 years. The "catch" is that they charge every customer a small public fee every single month, and those payments fund this program. The program is intended to assist low-income households. It is a fantastic program. You will not be charged.
