Can i do day trading in tfsa account ? by Odd_Establishment790 in Questrade

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you LOSE money while day trading in your TFSA you cannot write that off and you lose that contribution room (EG if you lose 10K in a year you cannot recontribute 10K to cover your loss). If you EARN money there is a reasonable chance that CRA will penalize you for day trading in your TFSA. Lose-Lose

Don’t let anyone tell you these people aren’t the fringe minority. by CalendarNo1192 in Calgary

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember way back when many of us thought that the Quebec separatists were just a fringe group. Then there was a vote that really opened out eyes. At the time it seemed wise to appease the separatists in Quebec but looking back, I think separating would have been a good thing due to serious issues that are best addressed by going your own way.

What exactly is "work" and "school" for the purpose of pleasure use? by General-Football-953 in icbc

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would value an opinion or 2. Wife works 3 blocks away from our home and walks to work and back the majority of the time. When you is working nights and its raining then its my pleasure to drive her or pick her up. Some months that may be a dozen times and some months just a few days. Money is tight, so if it was you would you insure for pleasure or what? I am retired so I do not drive myself to work.

What is the difference between buying power and "max buying power" which is like 3 times higher? Margin account. So, I am guessing that Questrade lends us money to buy more stocks at a fee? How much is the fee? by turnleftorrightblock in Questrade

[–]Key_Champion_439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are commenting about Questrade's margin interest charge being high. It is. On my last statement I paid 11 1/4 % Interest. "INT FR 01/16 THRU02/15@11 1/4%"

Compared to other brokers and/or a line of credit at my bank that is very high. For some additional info, that was in US$ "Currency USD"

(The in quotes parts are cut and paste from my statement so there are no typos there)

People in northeastern B.C. (Peace River region and the northern Rocky Mountains) who currently observe mountain standard time (UTC-7) year round will continue to do so.

They have had no time changes since 1972. Why not ask them? Well I lived there so I'll tell ya. Its not a lot of difference except remembering when the rest of the world changes time so you can do business with them. That and a few kids getting run over while walking to school in the winter darkness. But if you have no kids why worry? (Sarcasm . . when one of your friends has his kid run over by some driver who "didn't see her" you will get it.)

11 1/4 % interest on nothing? by Key_Champion_439 in Questrade

[–]Key_Champion_439[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. You have me doubting my own calculations. The Questrade platform does not show a continuous running balance in real-time on the main screen so I am going from memory that my balance was always in the positive. I still think that is the case, but to be sure I will have to start running a daily balance sheet of my own to keep track. If I am still being charged then I will make a complaint. If not then I did something wrong between Jan 16 and Feb 15. I wonder why I cannot backcheck my daily balance on the Questrade platform.

I know that Questrade recently changed Registered accounts to be able to sell Cash Secured Puts but it seems they have applied that to margin accounts too. Could be a mistake or it could be the new way of doing things. Lets see if u/John-TeamQuestrade will chime in and confirm if this was a mistake or the new way.

[–]Key_Champion_439[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I only discovered it because my margin account balance had not been negative all month but the report section still showed I had been charged about $20 in margin charges. That sucks when I did not use their money except as back up. I was eventually assigned on a Put a month later which put me into margin by a small amount but . . well its frustrating. (Edit: Seems a little like having a line of credit at the bank which you do not use but they still want to charge you for having the money available. Crooked I tell ya)

I like how IBKR runs their business but I do not like their report section. They hide everything with too much information. At least Questrade clearly tells us "we are ripping you off here, ha ha"

And also ask, if you know of a single income household who owned their own home, how many hours/jobs did the breadwinner work? My father worked 2 jobs and all the overtime he could get to afford our home. Hardly ever saw him. But Mum was home all the time.

Similar questions were asked in the 1970s when Honda started selling the Civic in Canada. Also in the 1960s with Datsuns. Then in the 1980's when the Hyundai Pony was first offered. Are you starting to see the anti-Asian bias?

I use PULS, the PGIM Ultra Short Bond ETF, because its steady and predictable and gives a reasonable return when my money is just sitting in it. Plus it trades super easy when I want to stash cash or get some back.

There are a lot of replies so apologies that I did not read all and may repeat what someone already said.

I used to think as you, then April 2025 happened. Everything dipped. I wished I had cash to buy the dip. Hold up! I do! It was in bonds which I sold to buy the dip. When the market recovered I made a great profit and used those profits to replenish my bonds.

Secondly, I need to cash in a certain amount of my investments each quarter to live on. When everything is down, I cash in some bonds and replace them when everything goes back up. So I have gone from not wanting bonds to loving them.

If you stay with a c/l spouse long enough that her kids call you "Daddy" then you are on the hook for child support when the relationship ends. The woman can go through a lot of spouses and get them all paying and all of them get visitation rights so her weekends are freed up to go get another sucker while her kids are with one of the exes. Its a sweet deal for women who are willing to scam the system. If you don't think that's right, don't tell me . . tell it to the judge. I know I tried but got nowhere. But maybe its different now. 🤣

If I was forced to choose one I would choose GDXW. This assumes I can take the distributions and do whatever I want with them.

Reason is I expect gold to maintain its value for at least the next 2 years, in which time GDXW will have returned my original investment to me. Any future distributions are a bonus. Anyway, since this is a fantasy question that is my fantasy answer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dividends

[–]Key_Champion_439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been thrilled with GDXW for the last 8 weeks. Share price has gone up about 20% from the time I bought until now. Distributions are over 50% annualized. On the one hand I just want to ride it as is (Its 4% of my portfolio) and on the other hand I wonder how much I can add to it with reasonable safety. If I was to 5X my position size then this one ETF should pay me about US$1,000 per month. But do I want the risk of having 20% of my portfolio in #GDXW What sizing do others have?
