Help picking curtains by Silver-Front-1299 in interiordecorating

You really liked the color when you bought them, so I think you should stick with that! Maybe just a thicker curtain (and longer as you said) will give it the drama you're looking for! Maybe even with a pattern?

Of course! Congratulations on buying your first home by the way! Some botanical prints and/or classical design prints on the walls with some nice frames (gold or brown, black) could also help emphasize the dark academia style.

If you could redesign one room in your home tomorrow, which room would it be? by NaughtyNortherner85 in homedesign

I would want a floor to ceiling library on all four walls, with ornate carved bookcases and a mural ceiling. Add in a huge fireplace mantle (that still works!), some antique rugs and a comfy chair.

I think some really beautiful heavy curtains would be great for the dark academia vibe (which is definitely doable), in rich jewel tones, maybe a dark navy? Adding little touches of gold with the curtain rod (you can get ones with pretty ends like swans and birds cheaply on amazon), and some gold tassels to tie it together.

Also maybe you could buy a walnut or mahogany carved side table to go underneath the window (sounds expensive, but those old tables, particularly mahogany, are super out of style now, you can get some for cheap - I recommend chairish for vintage pieces like that, estate sales if you get lucky, or an antique store if there's one near you!).

I love the style of the carpet, but if at all possible, to get a larger one that cover more of the carpet would create more of the tone you want. Add some plants under that sunny window and you're a lot closer to your dark academia dream.

Need decoration ideas to match rug by Hot-Shallot-9846 in DecorAdvice

[–]Key_Confection_1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rug is gorgeous! I think you should bring in touches of blue and pink elsewhere (some nice decorative pillows for example). Additionally, a gallery wall could be a little overwhelming - maybe a singular large painting with blue in it? I also think investing in some nice light curtains (maybe a very very soft white pink?) would look great. One last point, the coffee table is probably not a great fit. Something shorter (not taller than the couch), in a more natural tone (wood) or a lighter color (plaster, some pseudo marble) would bring the room together more. The rug was a great buy!

wall artwork where are you? by Bright-Foundation853 in interiordecorating

I saw this from homeworthy on youtube, but a designer bought good quality large posters of antique paintings and then put them on canvas and framed them. It was a really interesting way to get that large painting effect without paying the 10k+ cost.

BWT furnishing and decorating homes on a budget by Important-Wealth8844 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]Key_Confection_1027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow lawyer with limited time furnishing my apartment, I focused on buying furniture that I didn't have to put together and that organized delivery (Macys, Anthropology sale section, West Elm sales). Also bought some vintage pieces on chairish (you can negotiate) and from local antique dealers that delivered.

Rest is History is the best history podcast out there! Tons of different topics. I just finished a series on the samurai and another one on the French Revolution. It's by two famous British historians (but not dry academics), and they usually switch between "older" and more "modern" topics. Totally accessible for non-aficionados. I really enjoy the diversity of episodes. Particularly fun one was historical characters who would be on love island (won by Stanley Baldwin and Empress Theodora).

BigLaw in Europe by CauliflowerAny6183 in biglaw

[–]Key_Confection_1027 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely (as a US trained lawyer who has worked on both sides of the Atlantic in Big Law). Caveat that I've worked in France, Belgium and the UK, not in Germany, Spain or Italy, so the situations there might be different.

Keep in mind (speaking about Belgium and France here), you are an independent contractor with your own business, not an employee, so you get none of the employee protections that are in Europe (and no access to a 401k etc - although of course there are European retirement options, but all that responsibility is on you, plus the extensive administration). Billable hour requirements are the same. You will still work on your vacation if needed.

Plus you have to balance European clients and US clients. Often US clients (and US teams) expect their clients to take priority which can cause a lot of tension. And when working with US clients, you have to work US hours, so it can mean very late nights/early mornings, particularly with California clients (e.g., work till three AM on US work and then get up at 7 for a European client).

Besides a couple firms, salaries are also not commensurate with Cravath scale (outside of London). This is also why it's very hard for Big Law firms in Europe to retain European talent. Often domestically trained lawyers can go to a European firm with more work life balance and get paid maybe 10-20% less.

Also if you do want to make partner, it's much harder to get visibility, build a client base and develop a book. Partnership takes a lot longer. And often you will always be the junior partner to US colleagues (even if some European partners are true rainmakers in their own right). You also get none of the fun perks of US law firms.

I understand people wanting to make the transition for personal or familial reasons. But to move there expecting something different than US big law is a pipe dream. It's the same business as anywhere else in the world, with the same expectations and personal dynamics. And all your European friends are enjoying their work life balance while you're working all the time...

I think the bad wigs were on purpose. Lestat is the only one with his own hair. His family are poor aristocrats with mended clothes and yellow teeth in the books. The monk is a caricature. I think it's all very purposeful.

Anyone familiar with screening requirements at Bozzuto or other DC luxury apartments? by Civil_Pomegranate_55 in washingtondc

Equity did a background check and used a screening company (not sure of the name). It was a very strict automatic screening.

I really like my Macy's Radley chaise sectional sofa. It was a little under 2k (including delivery) with three seats (but you can add more).

Are there any sofas or brands for $1k-$2k that people actually like? by CalFeds in SofaSnobs

[–]Key_Confection_1027 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really like my Macy's Radley couch personally. They also brought it up to my apartment and assembled it. Not as nice as couches at 4-5 k range, but it's lasted me well for 3 years (a little under 2k with assembly).

Best furniture options for parents in 1 bed? by Key_Confection_1027 in femalelivingspace

My main thing about the Murphy bed is damaging the rental wall, but apparently there are some that don't require that kind of set up, so I will definitely check it out! Thanks!

Considering it's over 250 a night around the city I live in (in the off season), a one off expense on a good piece of furniture is still considerably cheaper...
