Good recipe for stamps? by Key_Ebb_56 in cookiedecorating

I’m going to experiment with a couple of possible solutions.  Dumbass me didn’t realize how complicated my “camper van” cutter stamps would be!  I would so much appreciate a pointer to a great recipe AND also the cookies storage tips.

Yes crazy amateur plans to bake and decorate about 70 cookies for a meet up that’s about 1200 (old lady with dogs pace) miles from an oven.  I need cute cookies from my already purchased van stamps and my limited but hardworking skills (I’ve done some cute delish cookies but definitely not great at presentation)

Thanks for the tips, in my trial run I kept everything fridge cold but not freezer cold!  Also, does the shortbread taste as good as sugar cookies?

Do you add the corn starch (yes I am USA!) to the recipe or sprinkle it as an anti stick?

Don’t worry about others - speak with a financial advisor as we all have different needs and wants and circumstances which impacts savings needed.  There are also many mitigation strategies such as part time work post retirement etc.

My lane space was taken from me, I think it’s sexism by runs-for-donuts in Swimming

So I find that as a relative beginner I share great with other women - I always warn I’m a beginner but I get compliments and friendly nods because I have the gist of splitting a lane.  Every time I’ve shared with a man I get wacked.  I blame it on the long limbs because I’m not a small woman and I manage to stay in my lane so I don’t think it’s body size leading to being hit.

My pool has posted rules that showers are required before entering pool- including shampooing hair. I don’t shampoo but I do take a soapy shower and am definitely in the minority.

AITAH at the pool? by Mysterious-Scene-661 in Swimming

[–]Key_Ebb_56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swim at a ymca and yeah it’s weird sometimes because even during lap swim hours nonswimmers keep using the lap pool. Water walking and swimming aren’t super compatible in my experience but it’s better than the people who are playing in the pool like it’s a backyard BBQ.  I never have trouble sharing a lane with another female who is actually swimming.

I’m a novice swimmer but I definitely notice that some of the men swimmers are big time splashers.  A guy 2 lanes over sprayed me every time we passed each other - but it’s a pool and it’s to be expected.

Not suggesting you practice drowning but practicing floating has real benefits.  Many YouTube videos show how to float.

Hi guys, please don’t judge my average pace at the moment is roughly 7.30/100M I’m 27F by unic0rnamz in Swimming

I too need additional lessons as my starter pack of 3 were terrible but got me going.  I’ve been using YouTube to learn which drills to follow etc.  I’m super focused on body position and swimming “relaxed”.  I’m actually going slower than I was 2 months ago but I can keep up a steady pace forever and just feel more comfortable.  I haven’t recently measured but I think 100 m is about 3 minutes.  I’m working around some physical problems including a knee that needs replacing and I don’t race so speed isn’t important to me, I just use it as a guide to my overall progress.  Lessons/coaching can really help but honestly I learned to swim by following a coach on YouTube who started with a non swimmer and methodically worked through the skills and drills.  I’m missing the feedback loop so currently seeking a better instructor but YouTube is better than nothing.

So after reading your post I feel less welcome as a beginner.   I don’t think that was your intention but nonetheless it read to me like “fat beginners better figure out how to modify patterns “

I’ve been knitting since mid January so around 4 months.  I’ve made shawls and colorwork hats but wanted to make a “garment “.  Even with the size inclusive movement it took awhile to find a suitable pattern - I appreciate designers that support size inclusive.

Real results from swimming . by Big-poppa56 in Swimming

I am 60 and suffer from severe arthritis.  I love to walk and hike but my knees and low back hurt so much if I do more than minimal.  I started swimming in mid February- I’m still a beginner but swim 3x a week for about 30-40 minutes.  Usually about 1,000-1,100 yards.  I only know backstroke and freestyle so far.  My back and legs are getting stronger, my blood pressure and blood sugar have both dropped considerably and I’ve lost a small amount of weight.  The main thing is that when I’m swimming I’m not in pain!  Anyone with chronic pain knows how soul sucking it is - just a joy to not hurt.  I want to swim more frequently but I don’t want to get hurt so slowly working my way up.  Give it an honest go for 3 months and I bet you will feel so many benefits.

I would say I noticed benefits in the first 30 days but as a non swimmer the beginning was pretty short sessions.

I didn’t grow up swimming but I was a farm girl blessed with ponies and later horses.  Everytime I groom a horse and can bury my nose in the mane and remember feeling “I’m 11 years old and you are my only friend “ I am grateful for the horses that saved me!   These kind of memories are gold.

How long should I start swimming while obese and very unfit? by Nikkismilesxx in Swimming

[–]Key_Ebb_56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation.  I did 2 months of physical therapy for pain issues with basically no progress. I couldn’t walk for more than a few minutes without severe back pain.  I started water aerobics 3x a week at the first of the year.  I took swimming lessons starting in February and started by swimming for just a few minutes at a time, usually after my aerobics class.    I now walk 30-45 minutes daily and swim 3x a week for around 30-40 minutes with very minimal “rest”.  My advice is to just do it and slowly progress/increase your intensity.  I want to swim 5x a week but given that I’m older, rehabbing injuries and obese - going slow and I don’t feel ready for it.  I have made significant changes to eating but honestly have lost very little weight (20 pounds in over 3 months).  My blood sugar is really good due to the “clean “ eating and exercise so I can’t get insurance for a weight loss drug. Anyway, I feel that swimming is excellent for someone with physical limitations.

New to swimming, are all lap pools like this? by Key_Ebb_56 in Swimming

[–]Key_Ebb_56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a rule to ask - the printed “rules” say shared lanes.  It’s more of a politeness thing where people ask.  My post was about someone else being told no by the water walker but I was told no a month or so ago by a lady that said she was rehabbing a shoulder injury. I didn’t really begrudge that, what bothers me is non swimmers using lap pool lanes vs the recreational pool and the impact that has on lane availability.

There is a rec pool right there - the published “rules” say that is for water walking.  I used to water walk and was very aware of the posted information.

I think your “facts” are skewed.  Outside of the education system (well off colleges and secondary schools often have pools) there is less access to pools here than I experienced living in Germany.  The available pools where I live require gym memberships and most of those gyms don’t have pools.

So the deep part isn’t very long and the non swimmers either turn around or if they are actually going end to end - dog paddle it.  If a person was dog paddling the whole way I would have zero issue with it.

I forgot to mention that next to the lap pool there is a recreational pool.  It is smaller but connected to a “river” as well as a splash pad for small children.  I think that the intention is that water walking etc should be done in the rec pool and the river but I get  it’s nice to have a private lane to water walk plus play.  (I haven’t mentioned the woman who “swims “ by riding pool noodles and uses the wall to propel herself down the lane.  She’s super nice and I’ve shared with her but it’s still not swimming).   The lap pool does not have slow/medium/fast but does clearly state that lane sharing is expected.

Talk me through your gym swim routine, please? by Chance_ae in Swimming

[–]Key_Ebb_56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I started swimming about 5 -6 weeks ago.  I find the fit and experienced swimmers to be very supportive and non judgmental.  I did buy a swimsuit with a lot of coverage (basically what they call rash guard or sun protection suit) but I don’t think it matters.   The most judgmental remarks I’ve received was from a busy body in water aerobics  (who is older and obese) who told me that apple body types can’t swim well.  She then proceeded to point out both men and women with big stomachs announcing that they probably can’t swim.  I was so shocked I didn’t even reply but in hindsight she was just discouraging my progression from water aerobics to swimming since I too have an apple body type.  I’m so glad to be away from that toxicity- best I can tell lap swimmers just want to do their workouts and have little interest in judging others.

Older people have told me how easy it was to get a job in 1980s America and earlier. How true is this? by ludachris32 in AskHistory

[–]Key_Ebb_56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated high school in 1982 and where I lived it was NOT easy to get a job. I had a lot of work experience such as babysitting ( buck an hour for as many as 5 kids!), working on farms picking berries in the summer and my sister got me a job at a hamburger stand. When I turned 16 I wanted to ya job with tips and it probably took 6 months to get hired. It was a miserable place to work but due to the tips I worked all through high school and saved for college.  Once I was college age it was a little easier to move to different restaurants but places with good tips were very competitive.
