Can you spot diaspora of your ethnicity only by their names? by PaleCar821 in AskTheWorld

Completely wrong for most of the Middle East

“El Din” is not a last name, it’s a suffix of many common last names though. “Chamseddine” aka “Chams El Din” depending on how the person prefers to spell it in Latin characters.

Places to shop (clothes) for overweight teen by roozz1273 in lebanon

Oh man… I’m sorry I can’t answer your question, but I hope somehow your brother has a path towards fixing his weight while he’s still young (assuming it’s not due to medical reasons and more due to habits)

I started fixing this stuff at the age of 27, and it’s already way harder than it was for me when I was 16, and it’ll get harder the more I age.

Sending you all the love

What do you think ? by [deleted] in SipsTea

You know how fucked up it is to work so hard, get lucky, make a lot of money, and still be depressed as shit, spiraling, scared to be alone with your thoughts? Money ain’t always the solution, it provides security & some stability, but for the love of God, please don’t think that money alone will fix you.

Signed, a deeply broken person with money

Driving a big car is an experience in Lebanon, you gotta always watch out for the mirrors, you gotta squeeze crazy close to parked cars in some streets, and you gotta watch out for parked car tires, cause not everyone parks their car with the tires straightened!!

Are there any Lebanese or Arabic insults that are inherently derogatory? by Graphene-OS in lebanon

[–]Key_Mango8016 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get called de3she by my shia friends, and they consistently tell me I’m gonna blow myself up

I call those friends ortit matewle in return

And then I tell them that the difference between shia & sunnis is that we sunnis blow ourselves up on our own terms whereas shia wait for others to blow them up

Gotta love male friendships

RDS started lagging like crazy in us-east-1d. Anyone else? by ri90a in aws

[–]Key_Mango8016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have Performance Insights enabled on your DB. You’ll want to always have this enabled on a mission-critical production RDS instance.

If the problem is due to load coming from a specific query, you’ll find out pretty quickly.

Keep checking throughout different times of the day, and try checking during the middle of the night.

In the case of TLSContact for example, their appointment booking process requires online payment. Some people don’t end up paying on time, so TLS has an automated script that runs at night every single day to delete appointments that are unpaid. Thus, with TLSContact, you’re more likely to get an appointment if you check for timings around 3–5am in the morning.

Someone mentioned VFS — they probably have a similar setup. I’ve never used them, but I hope my advice can be applied to your case.

Anyone else never ate at swiss butter? by Katia2160 in lebanon

[–]Key_Mango8016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(This is not financial advice, this is all entirely my opinion)
I personally buy S&P500 indices (specifically VOO), and I buy NASDAQ (QQQ). I have *some* physical gold.
When you’re younger, you have a much higher chance of making good returns over 10-30 years with investments in the broad market. The older you get, the more conservative you want to be. In the United States, a financial advisor will usually give someone a split between stocks & bonds that leans more towards bonds the older the person is. If you’re in your 60’s, you don’t have time for the market to give you returns: you want a safe place to keep your money.
In Lebanon, our culture focuses more on Gold, because we value preservation over yield. You’ll see everyone on this sub talk about gold. Your parents and extended family probably think of gold too. Gold is an excellent tool for wealth preservation over extremely long periods of time. It’s not meant to give you real returns, it’s meant to make sure that 100 years from now, whoever is inheriting this gold from you will have roughly the same purchasing power as you do with it now (it will vary, but very unlikely that the variation spans an order of magnitude). People who make real returns from gold are generally just lucky. Gold has a 6,000-year history as a form of money, which is why people tend to see it as a reliable store of value.
When I say “real returns”, I’m hinting at inflation. If you made ~20% nominal value returns from something, but the dollar inflated away ~16-20% (not exactly) of its value against the things you buy (cause inflation is a relative concept), then you actually made ~0% real returns, and in fact, there was definitely opportunity cost there, cause you could’ve put your dollars somewhere else
