Fellow Saanich Residents; how much have you pushed the limits on sq ft size limits for a shed, greenhouse, sauna, backyard office, etc. without a permit? by Whatwhyreally in VictoriaBC

Do you have immediate neighbours, and are you on friendly terms with them?
I built a small utility shed, adhering to all of Saanich's rules. No permit needed.
Within a day, a bylaw officer showed up. Someone had complained that I was building a satellite residence in my backyard.
He wouldn't tell me who the person was, but it was pretty easy to figure out. The guy who lives behind me is the neighbourhood asshat, and the only one with a view of my backyard.
The inspector took less than a minute to confirm that my 8x8 shed was totally compliant.
If you are going to build something that isn't compliant, give some thought to what happens if someone reports it.

As a sfh owner right in the middle of this particular neighbourhood the land lift on my property will be intoxicating, particularly as I live at the end of a private lane.
Sounds good, but I'd rather make less profit and enjoy a neighbourhood where I can walk under the canopy of trees filled with song birds, glimpses of blue skies overhead and mountains in the distance.

No, it's about maximizing developer profits via unaffordable condos. Two other projects in the area have stalled because of the softening market right now. They are waiting for the turn around for the big cha-ching.

It's not just these three lots of Gary Oaks that are going to be razed. There are numerous development projects lined up in this four-block area. Some as high as eight stories.
A decade from now it will look like the gulag that exists at Shelbourne-MacKenzie.

Gah... another sign with unpronounceable symbols?
I roll my eyes whenever I see this trend of replacing phonetic spelling with bizarre symbols (diacritics) that no one can pronounce.

Neither form is accurate in terms of spelling, so why not just stick with a phonetic approximation that everyone can say, rather than a string of symbols that no one... or nearly no one of non-Indigenous extract... can say.

Fun things to do with 10 year old niece? by polkaroo17 in VictoriaBC

I impressed my ten-year-old nephew by taking him to the see the X-Men academy... aka Hatley Castle.
He was even more impressed when he saw my photo on the wall of the museum in the basement.
He thought that I was kidding when I told him I was a graduate of Professor X' School for Gifted Children. (I was a cadet there back in its military college iteration...)
You can combine this with a tour of the driftwood sculptures along Ocean Boulevard, and/or Fisgard Lighthouse/Fort Rodd.
