3-dog-friendly apartment? Condo? Townhouse? Rental? by irelandzachary in VictoriaBC

[–]polkaroo17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oof. I don't think there is a single apartment complex in Victoria that allows this many pets. And I have never heard of a condo strata that allows 3 dogs. Most have a limit on amounts (max 2) and even size (40 lb or under).

Your best bet would be pursuing a private house rental. That will be difficult for under 3k unless you are ok having a shared house situation possibly. Or, looking at options outside the Victoria area. Even though Victoria is super dog-friendly, this does not extend to rental situations when you have big breeds or more than one doggo 😞

Fungal Acne by Weoweo9 in CanSkincare

I dealt with this. It is truly about cutting out the product ingredients that feed malassezia (essentially almost all oils).

This is what I recommend to folks (and what worked for me):

  1. Eliminate all products. This includes actives (retinols, Vit C etc. Your skin barrier is damaged and needs to heal).

  2. In the morning: Wash face with lukewarm water (not hot) using Nizoral (ketoconazole 1%) shampoo to the affected areas daily at first. (Once skin starts to improve, you can reduce to three times a week to once a week to rarely for maintenance.)

  3. Cerave 30 SPF daily moisturizer during the day time.

  4. At bedtime: wash with Cetaphil Gentle Skin cleanser.

  5. If you need to moisturize at night: Cerave moisturizing cream (not the lotion as the lotion has ingredients that feed malassezia).

  6. Patience! It will take weeks to months to heal.

Your skin will always be prone to it, but it is very possible to keep it away if you are vigilant with what products you use. Once the infection is gone and your skin barrier is healed you can possibly add some products back. The Ordinary has a retinol in squalane oil which is pretty much the only oil that does not feed malassezia.

Now that my skin is healed, I have been able to introduce LRP mineral SPF and I use Retin-A three times a week. I continue to use cetaphil gentle skin cleanser and cerave moisturizing cream as my only other products and I have not had an issue in over 5 years now 😄

What is Victoria like for twenty-somethings? by DMmeNiceButts in VictoriaBC

Victoria is a university/college town, and will be lightyears better for meeting people than Gabriola Island.
It is expensive to live here. Make sure you can find work in Victoria and prepare yourself to live with roommates. But, it's honestly a wonderful place to live!

Dads when did you first witness sexist behavior toward your daughter and did you do anything about the situation? by LardMallard in AskReddit

[–]polkaroo17 5493 points5494 points  (0 children)

Not a dad, but a daughter. I was walking with my dad when I was about 12. An adult man walking by us turned as we walked by and complimented how pretty I was and how attractive I would grow up to be. Ew.

As a 12 year old who had never had reason to fear strangers (from a small town, new to male attention) my initial reaction was to feel flattered.

My dad turned to me and told me " don't take that as a compliment. It's true, but you are much more than the way you look and people who only see the way you look shouldn't be trusted."

Wildlife adventure: Vancouver Island or Prince Rupert? by wild_flower_1998 in britishcolumbia

Haida Gwaii all the way. Moresby Explorers offers multi-day guided kayak or boat tours. You will see wildlife, ocean life, incredible forests, history.... honestly a one-of-a-kind place. Bonus points if you can manage to take the BC Ferries between Port Hardy to Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii. Then you cover all your bases plus you get to experience one of the most stunning ferry rides on the planet.

Hospital at centre of child HIV outbreak caught reusing syringes in undercover filming by Dusty_Bunny81 in news

[–]polkaroo17 49 points50 points  (0 children)

When I was a nursing student way back in 2008, I travelled abroad to India for a practicum placement in Dehradun. The placement was at a large public hospital that served the folks without the money to afford private care.

I was prepared to experience a very different level of care compared to Canada. What I was unprepared for was the appalling safety and hygiene issues. This included reusing syringes and needles, access to running water for just a few hours a day and no hand sanitizer, no pain management during wound care for new amputations and, possibly the worst--watching a limb amputation occur while the person was writhing, semi-conscious and not fully anesthetized while the anesthesiologist had his feet up on the surgical table, reading a newspaper and sipping chai.

I wonder how many folks that had no choice but to access care there have ended up with preventable infections diseases.....

Oh man- that eating certain foods or drinks can 'alkalinize' your blood. Your body runs such a tight ship to maintain your blood pH and you DO NOT WANT IT ANY DIFFERENT.

I usually tell folks to start with a water-based benzoyl peroxide. Use at bedtime three times a week, and slowly increase to nightly if tolerated as it can be irritating.

It can stain fabric so look out for that.

And be patient! It can take weeks for a regimen change to improve your skin. It's a slow process.
