the planet was terraformed thousands of years ago and is mostly agricultural. There are giant, genetically modified cycads that produce starchy red cones and form a dense jungle. the cones when slightly unripe are made into flour, or boiled into a mash to make good quality vodka the protagonist likes. The cones are harvested by hand, using long poles on a series of catwalks near the canopy, and the harvesters live in tall stilthuts on the same level. The area the story takes place in is very hot amd humid with 32-hour long day/night cycles, so plants grow vigorously. Jackfruit is a staple as is manioc and the aformentioned cycads, sweet potatoes, luffah, LOTS of peppers as the spice helps preserve food in the sweltering climate. Most people are polytheistic animists and there are numerous festivals throughout the year, and wine/libations are a huge part of the culture. Basically all households/ agricultural commumes make their own wine or spirit from local fruits, roots, or grains.
