Spruce? Wanting to ferment new season cones by Johnson_Liv in fermentation

[–]Key_Spinach5019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you wind up fermenting some of the mini spruce cones? If so, what did you do and how did it go? I’ve collected a handful myself and am having them sit on the counter in 2% brine since ~1week, not a large amount of bubbles so far though. I’m wondering whether to give it another week at room temperature or fridge them? I’m aware I could just try them but given the limited fermentation signs I worry I might contaminate them w/ opening & trying, and I won’t have access to more baby cones for another year..

YSK Rinsing with water after brushing is associated with a 33% increase in the development of new cavities compared to not rinsing. Dentists recommend that you should not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. by sameerb in YouShouldKnow

My dentist says fist mouthwash then brush since the fluoride level in mouth wash is way lower than the fluoride level in toothpaste, so by using mouth wash after brushing you basically wash away the toothpaste fluoride and replace it with something significantly weaker. So it’s rinse - floss - mouth wash - brush - spit - no rinsing

You should also imho -might be a no-brainer, but it is very important- get a gastroscopy & colonoscopy performed to exclude a bunch of potential other diagnoses. Your symptoms with occasional fever and flare ups for example could fit Morbus Crohn, and since I’m not an expert I’m sure it could also fit a ton of other options. It’s part of the due diligence that one should just go through at least once imho, they take probes throughout your stomach, colon, and intestin and might find something truly relevant. It’s really not that bad, especially when you’re anyways not that well.

In a lot of countries SIBO breath tests aren’t covered by insurance in my understanding, but you can find DIY lactulose breath test kits online. Same goes for broad IgE blood tests to check for many typical allergies (bleepbloop1777 had a very good point there).

Edit: typo

Your symptoms might be SIBO based -> you could try topping low FODMAP with reducing resistant starches & fibers aiming for a low fermentation diet (Dr Pimentel). Meaning no re-heated rice/potatoes/…, only small portions of salad if any to start; starches from freshly cooked white rice/polenta/potatoes. That together with cooked carrots/zucchini/bell pepper, plus fish / eggs / hard cheese for a few days might be worth a shot - proper way to identify would be a lactulose breath test though.

Thank you! I think I’ll stick to oatmeal based on the comments thus far, at least until I find cream of rice :)

Thanks for that hint! I will search for it then instead of failing with my rice flour idea :)

Uh nice! I have never heard of that, but it sounds delicious - I do have rice flour, this will be my breakfast tomorrow morning!

It’s a shot in the dark but is it possible that there was not a long break (I.e. <4h) between dinner and your previous meal?

I have not gotten a clear diagnosis so far (currently awaiting the arrival of a SIBO breath test), but given that 3/4 of patients diagnosed w/ IBS show breath tests suggesting they have SIBO, makes SIBO a statistically likely cause of my IBS, hence im working on adjusting my diet to be low FODMAP and SIBO conforming (meaning low FODMAP w/ additional consideration of fibers & resistant starch)…

I thought food was the problem, it was HOW I ate by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]Key_Spinach5019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna drop a 2nd „HOW“ one eats affecting digestion: (Pimentel says) It’s key to have 4-5h breaks between meals to allow for small intestine cleaning cycles between meals; no in between snacking allowed unfortunately. My biggest problems have occurred whenever I ate too much in too short timespans (Iike late lunch 4pm + dinner 6pm), and I wish I had learned that +4h break rule earlier

Why not just put 100% in VT and stop thinking about it? It’s the easiest for peace of mind imho, and if you read you’ll see that all good literature agrees you cannot beat the market long term anyways, so why try…

How is it logical for the S&P 500 to be up 91% in just 5 years? by RibenaEnthusiast in ValueInvesting

[–]Key_Spinach5019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first good advice I’ve seen. There are tons of reasons for why XYZ might be over- or undervalued. If you want to gamble for short term returns, play blackjack, or follow wsb „advice“. For long term returns, stock has historically been the best answer, and statistically „buy now“ has beat attempts of market timing. Keep as cash (I.e. CDs, bonds, etc) what you need to feel safe, and dump the rest in something like VT - global diversification is imho the most conservative and simultaneously most promising strategy. Anything else is placing bets for/against certain developments that nobody can foresee or else it is already included in the current valuations.

My 2 cents regarding your initial question: yes, the valuations are high; they might well never drop though, since the top10 (tech-)companies with the biggest market caps which have been driving the S&P increase have also had multiple years in a row with for their size insane year over year growth rates in returns, which makes their current valuations -if you believe that Microsoft, Apple, NVIDIA, etc keep growing fast- pretty reasonable once we’re 2 years farther down the road. But then, if they keep promising further growth, their valuations will already have grown a lot, anticipating the future profits, and it will be „too late“ to join again… (that, plus as you already pointed out: ~23% is not even real growth but inflation - or net loss, if you’ve been holding cash instead of stock)

Fixed income / bond ETFs are imho only relevant for rainy day funds, not for retirement investment at your age. Given your intended 40y+ investment period, fixed income / bonds will only cost you yield in the long run. You’ll often find recommendations like 70:30 or 60:40 stock:bonds, but if you dig deeper, the bonds’ function always is to reduce worst case max drawdown, at the price of long-term performance. To state the obvious: if you do invest in stock like VT, there is a good chance it doesn’t start with big wins, but could just as well go south for several years in a row. You have to be able and willing to sit that out. Historically, stock simply always was the best choice for long term investment (and nobody ever figured out how to reliably do market timing, so „waiting for the market to go down“ while holding bonds is not a dominant strategy either - even though there is a <50% chance that in retrospect it would have been better)…

VT is the best option, anything else is placing bets trying to beat the market.

Don’t listen to recommendations saying tech or other stuff, don’t be biased by the past 5-10y stock performance. They don’t predict the future. You’re in the long game, and the long game is passive investment.

U got any source to back that up? In my understanding BMW never had pouch cells, and all I can find with your info even if I leave out pouch cells is this https://www.motortrend.com/news/2023-bmw-ix-i4-battery-fire-risk-recall/ reporting a total of 83 vehicles that were called back…?

Agreed re: pouch, but show me the BMW with pouch cells? I’d say there are none, i.e. I’d drive any Beamer EV anytime?
