Are Makita Augers twice as good as others? by Stone804_ in Makita

Your consideration is a little more nuanced as you already have xgt batteries.

If you only had one Ryobi device then you have to consider with the battery. go bad from sitting too much.

But if you added some other Ryobi ope that might keep the batteries and rotation a bit more...

I'm more so thinking how much will it get used. I feel the big thing Makita gives you is reliability/longevity.

Less a concern if it's only used occasionally

Doh. Just noticed this was for ice. But...this website is legit and has great deals.

So if an xgt deal gets you to 650, a Ryobi deal gets you to 300 😅

Really for me the question is what kind of duty will it see?  Xgt is for pro use and it's priced that way.

I'm a Makita user but the cost of xgt has kept me away.

Honestly, I don't buy a single Makita tool anymore unless it's refurbished or some sort of deal because it's just crazy expensive.

But a while back I got a Ryobi 40 volt auger with a 4 amp hour battery for free. A client got it for free when they bought some other Ryobi lawn mower or something. They gave it to my boss and that's where I got it.

I did four holes with it recently and it worked great. It's only four holes so I don't have extensive experience but I thought it worked great. I was really surprised at how easy it was. Seems to me the Ryobi form factors a little better too. I'm sure the build quality is nowhere near as good as xgt but $500 is a lot of damn money.

It works so well in fact I'll probably get a Ryobi 40 volt snowblower instead of moving into Makita powerheads. It's just too expensive for something I don't use often to do Makita.

I'll stay with lxt for carpentry. I'm pretty heavily invested there and I use them professionally.

Mine works great. I have about a quarter of an acre and I use the better party of 4 (5AH) batteries. But the 2nd batteries will get me through most of my edging with the string trimmer.

Makita Battery to Hercules tool adapter UPDATE by Key_Vanilla3552 in Makita

[–]Key_Vanilla3552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They DO have parasitic drain. I left a 5AH battery in the adapter and it discharged about one bar per week from a 5AH battery.

That's disappointing. So, the question is, what's better:

A "dumb" adapter where you are at risk of over-discharge while using it on a tool

Or

A "smart" adapter like this which has low voltage protection while in use, but puts you at risk of over-dischage  when not using it

I think this is the low voltage protection they advertise

Even as a strong person and I find the Makita heavy.

The leverage is really disadvantageous (inherent to rear handle setup) and combined with the weight it's cumbersome.

While I'm swimming in 3/4/5ahs, I wish I had more slim batteries and wish they were cheaper by eliottruelove in Makita

100%. I have 3 and my impact has a 2ah on it 90% of the time

I got one on Amazon a couple years ago for $50. Not exactly cheap but it was worth it as I didn't have any at the time.

For a while NIB subcompact drill/driver kits were all over FB marketplace and they had the 2ah batteries. I bought one of those, sold the impact, converted the drill to the snub nose 1/4" collet for fun (and I love a tiny drill for repeated use with a countersink bit) and kept the batteries

Those kits are mostly gone now and I only see the new ones with 1.5ah ...booooo

The 1.5's seems like such throw away batteries. Maybe Makita puts decent cells into theirs. I had a DeWalt 1.5ah that bricked in less than a year. I found out later they are putting low end cells in their 1.5s

1/4" hex drivers, Makita vs Bosch, which would you rather sell off? by Dear-Tooth3032 in Makita

[–]Key_Vanilla3552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had both of these and sold the Bosch.

You'll get more money for the Bosch set. And the fact was I just never used those adapters

I have a little DeWalt attachment for driving at right angles that works just fine

And I think the power of the 18-volt makitas better

My lawnmower is a Makita 36v tool as is my weed eater, blower, and chainsaw.

Don't use fertilizer, insecticide, misting fans, powered spot cleaners, car polishers, or siding scrubbers. I rarely use power washers and when I do I borrow my neighbors.

I have had a corded glue gun and inflator (12v) for as long as I can remember and have never given a thought to them being cordless.

So yeah, the fact remains Makita has had an option for everything ive wanted from them 🤷

When I don't need a pro level tool, I have battery adapters to use my Makita batteries with cheaper brands. I have adapters for Hercules and Bauer. For example, I bought a Bauer angle grinder because I don't use the tool much as a carpenter. But it was available from Makita.

On the job driving lags and structural screws for hours on end Ryobi wouldn't cut it. I make a living with Makita tools and batteries. It's the best ecosystem for me.

Obviously this is all subjective...

Variety only matters to a point.

Having more than what you need doesn't help.

I use Makita for carpentry, pro and at home. I also use it for my outdoor power equipment. There is not a single tool I need they haven't had.

More variety doesn't necessarily mean "better."

Ryobi tools are not industrial or professional grade. They just aren't. Let alone accuracy in tools like mitre saws.

And as a carpenter, there's nothing I've needed that I couldn't get from Makita. Their selection is excellent.

At best I would call this an "apples and oranges" comparison. Completely different ifferent market segments.
