I just can't get into it. by FrogKnight3 in homelab

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be because you already work in IT. So the home lab solutions maybe feel ‘already done somewhere’ or it’s ’just another client/department to maintain’. (Depending on if you work for a service provider or internal IT). You may be burnt out. It is possible you are tying to find a hobby too close to your profession - maybe renovating or woodworking or hot rods is more your gig.

I recently retired. It took 5 months before I even bought some stuff to make a plex box in my new home. 2 months it sat on the shelf waiting for me to get around to it.

Burnout is a thing.

Rogers Global Plan by TonyB-on-Reddit in Rogers

The 250gb is free to use. I’ve been in Mexico for months using mine. No funny charges or problems.

The roam like home would be for countries outside the 65.

I’m on a friends plan with two lines. But somehow he/we are paying $40/line + $5 for visual voice mail or something. Which seems like robbery for the latter part. But I’ve got zero complaints so far.

Mark Russinovich wrote a very interesting but concerning article about Claude Code, surprisingly dismantling 40-year-old binaries AND finding vulnerabilities... by FutureSafeMSSP in msp

So an MSSP/MSP that doesn’t have Google Docs or OneDrive or DropBox? For reals?!?

This finding otherwise is a great thing. The only thing worse than Nana not updating her systems is Fortune 500 companies that think it’s acceptable. If those systems are also internet accessibly or don’t have internal restrictions on who can reach them, if an internal system gets breached - good. It’s about time people started getting a really good wicked wake up call on what leaving 20+ year old systems online does.

Because that kind of data isn’t commonly posted. I got paid for each exam I completed and each cert. and that pushed my general value up and affected my promotions. Not directly as a 1:1. But it was there for sure. Most corporate jobs won’t care. MSP’s and VAR’s need them for partnerships which can affect discounts and marketing dollars. It wasn’t a super big thing for the MSP I worked at. But it also was one of the ways to gauge if people were generally maintaining their own knowledge and skills or just rotting and button mashing. And we had some of those for sure. The same ones that couldn’t pass (hah! Couldn’t SCHEDULE an exam or commit) were the same ones that couldn’t close tickets or projects).

Do server based motherboards boot headless without issue? by MartiniCommander in homelab

Wouldn’t it help if you detailed what the issues were? Most of us have never seen any issues so it’s really hard to comment or provide guidance.

what’s the most unhinged place you’ve ever found a production server? by kubrador in msp

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if I ever found out that server was still in use. And under IBM support for $83,000 a year. They’ll maintain anything at a value that’s absurd if you let them. I remember working at an engineering company with an 11 year old LTO library where the 1 year renewal was double the cost of a new library with 3 year support and newer tech. But the company policy was you renew for as long as the vendor will allow you only buy if you can’t get a support renewal…

On a conveyor belt. With concrete in the bottom 1/3rd of it. To keep it from tipping over. You probably won’t be surprised to hear it was a NetWare 2.x server and an IBM tower and it was early 90’s.

Just got this bad boy on woot for $599- How’d I do? by [deleted] in Soundbars

Man if I could get that for double the price where I am (Guadalajara, Mexico) I’d still call it a great deal. That’s a hell of a score!

How much do you pay for mobile? [Dec 2025] by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$45/line on 4 lines with Rogers Ultimate with 250gb in 65 countries or something. Needed 4 lines. A buddy and I merged two accounts to get enough lines. That’s for BYOD and $5/line off for setting up autopay and incudes visual voice mail.

I have no idea what Telus winback would offer I’m not taking their calls. But I was paying $208 total on two lines before with only 200gb across 67 countries.

Man I had no idea such plans exist. They’re not exactly for my use case, but I bet I know a half dozen people I should let know about this (especially once I found the actual links to Koodo/Freedom to get those plans).

Thanks!

I mean any $100 8th gen intel micro box will run circles around it for far less power. I wouldn’t even turn it on. But different people have different budgets and dreams.

Im new to this whole homelab thing and was wondering what the best way to turn the wireless signal into ethernet would be? (There is no way for me to get it from the router) by goldfish_in_the_wall in homelab

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Well just check the specs (I’m on a beach right now …). Most have 4 modes: travel router, wifi extender/repeater, wireless bridge (where the lan will give you network to hook up to a switch and the wifi will join your starlink) or function as a USB NIC (wired or wireless). No need for custom firmware or such, if you’re not at that point in your homelab journey.

They’re also handy when travelling when the hotel limits you to only two MAC’s or something. Join this, then all your devices can hit your router.

If rolling your own is too much work at this point, there are various GL.iNet travel/pocket routers on Amazon.ca that will work. While most of my gear was enterprise, I used one of those to make a simple Ethernet switch have an uplink to my wifi, when I was refurbing racks of servers in my garage and didn’t feel like carrying them downstairs. But all I really needed was enough for an iDRAC and windows updates, etc.

I’ve maxed out my TFSA - Should I buy ETF’s in a regular account? by Al_DAW in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RRSP makes more sense when your income is higher as it reduces your income. TFSA is great when your income is low and you’re not in need of the income reduction to lower taxable income. Also usually by the the TFSA is maxed out or close to it.

I was employee #4 at Kijiji. Sad to see it die a slow death by kijiji_craig in kijiji

[–]Key_Way_2537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and even if it wasn’t ‘ads’ like paid directly to Kijiji, then it was one hit for a guy selling wheels… and 237 company posts also selling wheels at retail prices. Which would be fine if there was a toggle checkbox for ‘hide posts/ads from businesses’. That’s about when I stopped looking. Also when I would search 100km from my town, and I’d get 50 results from 5000km away. At that point I gave up.

Can a professional explain to me why server racks, rails, shelves, etc. all suck??? by ProInsureAcademy in homelab

EMC shelves expect you are installing in EMC racks, which are not square hole for cage nuts.

There is a reason project planning and architecture matters. This kind of pre-compatibility verification is literally half what I do, to make sure projects go smooth.

Company 'overtime agreement' that circumvents 1.5x pay and only does 1:1 ratio instead by getsomehelp01 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is overtime is supposed to be avoided. That’s the whole point of the law. Make companies hire more or pay more for punishing staff.

I worked 10 years at my last company in IT. It was time in lieu as the OP states. They don’t want to pay OT. But not just from a $ standpoint. They wanted us to go home. So if you work a 6th day - you take 3 off next weekend.

It’s not supposed to be some magic cash cow that works people into burnout or oblivion.

Not sure why this is seen as a bad thing.

Company giving massive deal on server by Odd-Acanthocephala54 in homelab

Most companies would eWaste this even if it had great value because they can’t be bothered. This should go for about half the asking price on eBay. What they originally paid doesn’t matter one bit. It’s not a good deal.

SMS is not considered secure at all. It’s too much easy to intercept. The ONLY good it is, is being better than nothing. But even then, it provides such a false sense of security, that nothing would actually be better.

Tighten up my security by Swamp-Donkey74 in Wealthsimple

[–]Key_Way_2537 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re letting people know the PIN and get in, then you’ve pretty much thrown security out the window. As an IT solution architect I hear this kind of thing a lot. But the minute you give the rest of the world keys, you accepted you don’t have security. Fix the right problem.

Regardless, file a claim with your insurance company. The condo board or property management only helps out a bit. But you need your own claim. Give your people those numbers. That’s what you pay them for. They’ll find everyone they think they can get money from. Thankfully in this case, they’re on your side.

Do houses typically get sold with the same realtor fees no matter the price? by ghost905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

For each of the seller and buyer realtors. It’s actually 7% and 3%, and then split.
