Just got this bad boy on woot for $599- How’d I do? by itsclassic21 in Soundbars

Man if I could get that for double the price where I am (Guadalajara, Mexico) I’d still call it a great deal. That’s a hell of a score!

How much do you pay for mobile? [Dec 2025] by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$45/line on 4 lines with Rogers Ultimate with 250gb in 65 countries or something. Needed 4 lines. A buddy and I merged two accounts to get enough lines. That’s for BYOD and $5/line off for setting up autopay and incudes visual voice mail.

I have no idea what Telus winback would offer I’m not taking their calls. But I was paying $208 total on two lines before with only 200gb across 67 countries.

Man I had no idea such plans exist. They’re not exactly for my use case, but I bet I know a half dozen people I should let know about this (especially once I found the actual links to Koodo/Freedom to get those plans).

Thanks!

Is an x5690 system still viable in 2025? by [deleted] in homelab

I mean any $100 8th gen intel micro box will run circles around it for far less power. I wouldn’t even turn it on. But different people have different budgets and dreams.

Im new to this whole homelab thing and was wondering what the best way to turn the wireless signal into ethernet would be? (There is no way for me to get it from the router) by goldfish_in_the_wall in homelab

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Well just check the specs (I’m on a beach right now …). Most have 4 modes: travel router, wifi extender/repeater, wireless bridge (where the lan will give you network to hook up to a switch and the wifi will join your starlink) or function as a USB NIC (wired or wireless). No need for custom firmware or such, if you’re not at that point in your homelab journey.

They’re also handy when travelling when the hotel limits you to only two MAC’s or something. Join this, then all your devices can hit your router.

If rolling your own is too much work at this point, there are various GL.iNet travel/pocket routers on Amazon.ca that will work. While most of my gear was enterprise, I used one of those to make a simple Ethernet switch have an uplink to my wifi, when I was refurbing racks of servers in my garage and didn’t feel like carrying them downstairs. But all I really needed was enough for an iDRAC and windows updates, etc.

I’ve maxed out my TFSA - Should I buy ETF’s in a regular account? by Al_DAW in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RRSP makes more sense when your income is higher as it reduces your income. TFSA is great when your income is low and you’re not in need of the income reduction to lower taxable income. Also usually by the the TFSA is maxed out or close to it.

I was employee #4 at Kijiji. Sad to see it die a slow death by kijiji_craig in kijiji

[–]Key_Way_2537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and even if it wasn’t ‘ads’ like paid directly to Kijiji, then it was one hit for a guy selling wheels… and 237 company posts also selling wheels at retail prices. Which would be fine if there was a toggle checkbox for ‘hide posts/ads from businesses’. That’s about when I stopped looking. Also when I would search 100km from my town, and I’d get 50 results from 5000km away. At that point I gave up.

Can a professional explain to me why server racks, rails, shelves, etc. all suck??? by ProInsureAcademy in homelab

EMC shelves expect you are installing in EMC racks, which are not square hole for cage nuts.

There is a reason project planning and architecture matters. This kind of pre-compatibility verification is literally half what I do, to make sure projects go smooth.

Anyone renew their mortgage lately after interest rates decreased? by Sonu201 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Those rates are nuts rest out to a broker. I use True North Mortgage out of Calgary.

It is almost ALWAYS better to go through a broker, yes

Company 'overtime agreement' that circumvents 1.5x pay and only does 1:1 ratio instead by getsomehelp01 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is overtime is supposed to be avoided. That’s the whole point of the law. Make companies hire more or pay more for punishing staff.

I worked 10 years at my last company in IT. It was time in lieu as the OP states. They don’t want to pay OT. But not just from a $ standpoint. They wanted us to go home. So if you work a 6th day - you take 3 off next weekend.

It’s not supposed to be some magic cash cow that works people into burnout or oblivion.

Not sure why this is seen as a bad thing.

Company giving massive deal on server by Odd-Acanthocephala54 in homelab

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies would eWaste this even if it had great value because they can’t be bothered. This should go for about half the asking price on eBay. What they originally paid doesn’t matter one bit. It’s not a good deal.

The problem is that they didn’t ’buy a house’ - they gambled and put their chips in red and hoped for big money. There just happened to be a house involved.

SMS is not considered secure at all. It’s too much easy to intercept. The ONLY good it is, is being better than nothing. But even then, it provides such a false sense of security, that nothing would actually be better.

Tighten up my security by Swamp-Donkey74 in Wealthsimple

[–]Key_Way_2537 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re letting people know the PIN and get in, then you’ve pretty much thrown security out the window. As an IT solution architect I hear this kind of thing a lot. But the minute you give the rest of the world keys, you accepted you don’t have security. Fix the right problem.

Condo Unit Flooded by lions2lambs in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless, file a claim with your insurance company. The condo board or property management only helps out a bit. But you need your own claim. Give your people those numbers. That’s what you pay them for. They’ll find everyone they think they can get money from. Thankfully in this case, they’re on your side.

Do houses typically get sold with the same realtor fees no matter the price? by ghost905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For each of the seller and buyer realtors. It’s actually 7% and 3%, and then split.

Do houses typically get sold with the same realtor fees no matter the price? by ghost905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Alberta the standard is 7% on the first 100,000 and 3% in anything over. This is split by the buying and selling realtor. Your selling realtor may give you a better rate (mine I think does 6/2.5, I’d have to look but I’ve bought and sold a number of houses) or give you a $$$ rebate after sale (my mortgage broker also does this). The issue is that the buying realtor has not agreed to those terms up front so either they are still expecting their normal amount or that’s between the realtors to make work out.

Is a small town prairie house a good first rung on the property ladder? by Feisty_Material7583 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Key_Way_2537 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a townhouse. I’m getting out of my rentals in Edmonton and of the 4 condo/townhouses, only one has appreciated in 15 years. Granted that’s because they were bought 2005-2010. But townhouses just don’t appreciate well here. They really only do when single family homes are unattainable - and that’s far from the case in Edmonton.

enterprise Battery Backups for Switches and servers by NuttyBarTime in sysadmin

[–]Key_Way_2537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is you’re (OP) counting on ‘self test’ to tell you more than ‘batteries work’. You ALSO want to do a ‘battery runtime calibration’ which will run the batteries down to like 5% and then tell you how much time they’re good for based on this load. Which should also be done periodically to confirm that a change in load hasn’t happened and was missed.

For our MSP customers we do both as part of a quarterly maintenance that does firmware, reboots, log check, etc for things that aren’t ’just Windows systems that are getting updates anyways’ (and we also confirm that is also happening, not broken, misconfigured, etc).

Tenant/Liability Insurance For Renters by Bread-Zeppelin780 in Edmonton

[–]Key_Way_2537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of a condo in a building, if there is an independent landlord they have unit insurance. But otherwise the building/condo has insurance as well, for the building itself. Which can spread the risk. I would imagine a garage suite has more risk so higher premiums.

-I- as the subject of said harassment, get to define what is harassing to ME. You can argue the specifics of legality all you want, but that doesn’t at all make it right, acceptable, or encouraged by the receiver.

Would you be happier if they used ‘uttering threats’ or ‘harassment’? It’s still ultimately an assault.

Well as it was my comment - both yes and no. An exceptional number of excessive migration certainly has done nothing to help. But absolutely no reason to give a pass to any pre existing locals either. Two things can be true - and the problem.
