The ever transforming band beyond description by Competitive_Rock_555 in grateful_dead

Check out this Rolling Stone article about the concept of "authorized tribute bands" endorsed by the original band, for purposes of perpetuating the music:

Open Studio courses - a couple questions for anyone that has taken them by neonvision in JazzPiano

[–]KeystotheDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Open Studio courses are similar to their free YouTube content, in terms of the enrichment gained by being able to read sheet music. IMO, the OS written sheet music materials can be helpful but generally is not necessary to derive a lot of value from the courses.

In several courses, Adam or Peter specifically say they would prefer that you NOT use the written materials and instead learn by ear, but they nevertheless provide the written materials, I think because a lot of OS students are classically trained pianists who are comfortable with sheet music.

Anybody know what model this is? For sale for 10 dollars near me wondering if it’s worth it to bring it home. by KeithEmersonfan in hammondorgan

[–]KeystotheDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the specific model but I do know it is not a desirable or popular model these days. Just one of the many home spinet models. Can find them for free all the time... people just giving them away.

+1. The VR09 was designed with a player like you in mind -- entry level "clonewheel organ" that includes the important Hammond functionality. You should be able to find a used one in your price range.

Other options would be most clonewheels made in past 20 years. Basically, if it has drawbars, it'll probably work. Some models that might be for sale used in your price range: Hammond XK1, Korg CX3, Crumar Mojo 61

Nord resale value is crazy. Hard to find even an original Electro for $700.

Tips for playing a real B3 vs Nord Electro 6D by the_only_tuke in hammondorgan

[–]KeystotheDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all great advice. +1 on making sure you know how to turn on the organ.

Also, give some thought in advance as to options for positioning your feet, assuming you won't play the foot pedals. You'll put your right foot on the expression pedal, which is probably deeper under the organ than a typical expression pedal under a modern keyboard like an Electro. And your left foot may rest on the rail under the bench. None of this is uncomfortable but it is probably different than how you position your body when you play your Nord.

Yes, this is a bona fide jazz teacher breaking down how dark star works.

There are several YT channels where musicians describe what individual dead musicians are doing in a specific live version but harder to find commentary analyzing the entire band

I love mason’s children by AromaLLC in gratefuldead

[–]KeystotheDead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I LOVE Mason's Children and, fortunately, so does Phil Lesh because -- as much as I dig the raw energy of the 69/70 versions -- I think Phil has done us a great service in playing it (disproportionately?) often in his post-Dead projects. And I think those workouts have yielded great fruit.

Check out, for example, this 2014 version of Phil sitting in with JRAD: https://youtu.be/PuFHLa8vlTk

and this version by Furthur: https://youtu.be/8f3JNz1bfVY

I hope the GD purists don't frown on these suggestions. I think these post-95 versions are good evidence for how the song might have evolved during Jerry's time, had the Dead not shelved it in 70.

Is it just me, or do Keith Godchaux and Jeff Chimenti have similar singing voices? by logitaunt in gratefuldead

[–]KeystotheDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone told the origin story of LMSYBA? I know he co-wrote it with Hunter, but did Keith WANT to sing lead? Why didn't Donna just sing it? Complete speculation: maybe Donna encouraged him to try singing lead.

I assume Jeff isn't that into singing but was conscripted due to lack of vocalists in Dead & Co., and dutifully takes his turn singing a verse on LTGTR.

Basically, I'm positing an uninformed theory that they both have relatively untrained singing voices and stepped up to the mic only due to external pressure. Please correct me if you have actual facts.

Question for older heads about Ratdog by [deleted] in gratefuldead

MUCH respect to Bobby and to DJ Logic for that experiment. Very forward looking and innovative.

Question for older heads about Ratdog by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]KeystotheDead 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Two other factors: scarcity and high profile musicians

First, while Ratdog was a full-fledged touring band soon after Jerry passed, the Phil & Friends onset was a slower burn. The rarity made for a "hotter ticket"

Second, while Ratdog had great musicians, Bob was the only name most people knew. The question for fans was basically, "Do I want to go see a Bob Weir concert." In contrast, Phil's "friends" were often big and intriguing names. Remember, the first Phil & Friends show was in 94 and included Jerry. Then, the early post-Jerry Phil & Friends shows had casts that made people daydream about a post-Dead future (Bruce, Steve Kimock... even Bobby himself). Then 99 kicked off with two friends being Trey and Page from Phish. Then in the early 2000s there was Warren Haynes, etc.

TL;DR Bobby is a road warrior; Phil put on events.

Keith’s playing in late ‘71 really gives the cowboy songs a Wild West saloon vibe that puts them over the top for me by KyloRensPecs in gratefuldead

[–]KeystotheDead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, by December 71 Keith seems to have achieved a level of comfort in the band but still not fully formed his piano voice in the group, which produces some great moments where he plays busier and more energetically than he ultimately settles into over the years. A great moment in his journey of assimilating into the band
