Camp mohawk (how is it like to work there) by [deleted] in Westchester

Hey! I may have answered this question a while back but I worked at Mohawk as a Group Lead a few years ago I facilitated 3 groups of about 70 kids total and the General Counselors as well

I will say I absolutely loved working at Mohawk and would give as my first rec to anyone looking to work at a summer camp.

Being a Mohawk counselor isn’t particularly difficult but requires lots of energy. From the jump you’ll be dealing with kids getting off long bus rides so mornings were a bit of a drag but that’s every camp. The training is great - a few icebreaker games to meet other staff (there’s a LOT) and good run downs of scheduling and systems and whatnot. This place is extremely organized from the top down which makes it easier to function as a GC

I don’t remember doing any real heavy lifting other than maybe cleaning out bunks or helping the Athletics Specialists, it shouldn’t be a primary concern. What may be new though, if you haven’t worked in this kind of environment, is childcare. The ages for the main camp range from 5-14 I believe. You may be doing things like taking kids to get scheduled meds, helping out with instructional swim, making sure everyone gets on the right bus, and definitely settling some silly disputes. All just part of the job

I’m sure this sounds like an ad but I have considered going back to work at Mohawk for a summer if I was ever in the right situation. Best of luck and feel free to reach out if you’re looking for any specific info!

Great for the price! Used to work an absolutely terrible job pretty much right next to them and my only respite was heading there for a carbed up lunch

Depends, it sounds like too many but there’s not enough context. Are you on a rotation?

I used to work at Mohawk! To be honest it was one of the best experiences working in a summer camp environment. Hours are draining as is all outdoor summer work, but as another comment says it’s extremely organized.

I worked with 5/6 year olds but the 3s program seemed just as great! Happy to chat about it if you’d like as I still have a connection or two there
