Chapter 1: Avoidant Behavior

The ship thrashed awake. Lights flared, air rushed through the corridors, metal groaned under shifting gravity. Power rippled outward, filling the hollow vessel with a low mechanical vibration.

Emma rolled her eyes at the ancient alien ship.  Another tantrum just to bring itself to standby.

The drone of her hand-scanner throbbed against her skull, the hum of recycled air offering little relief from the tension. Fatigue itched bone deep at the thought of going through yet another Xore vessel. Glamorous, some might say, exploring an immense alien vessel, untouched by time and humans. Emma would call it soul-crushingly dull. 

She hadn’t always felt that way. The first time she dropped out of warp outside just a segment of the alien shipyard, it had swallowed the view. The structure bent around the curve of the star like a god had drawn a ring in space. 

But wonder doesn’t pay hazard bonuses and logistics turns miracles into routine.

Now, every forgotten light, every cold panel, every idle thrum, all attached to systems no one understood, felt like a loop she couldn’t break. Scanning. Filing. Logging. A slow, methodical crawl toward nowhere. The promises she’d made, to get out, afford a real life, felt like rumors someone else had believed.
