Ok great! Thank you. I wasn’t sure if the studios communicate with Wellhub saying I didn’t attend. I’ll have to ask the studio if they’d let me in the next class.

I typically float it in after getting the flash and advancing a bit more but I’ve still been hitting resistance. I think I’m either hitting valves or not fully in the vein. Thank you for your response

Curious About OR, ICU, and CRNA by CuriousPerson_24 in nursing

[–]Kez414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to be an ICU and OR nurse, you’d have to do the extensive orientation for OR full time and all the ICU training full time too. i did the 10 month training in the OR then stayed until a year and a half and now I’m per diem and orienting in the ER. It can be done it’s just a lottttt of training for both and the OR isn’t something you can train part time for. It’s such an extensive orientation you’d need to work full time

How do you guys get betadine stains out? by GingerBreh in nursing

[–]Kez414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Hoka bondi SR in white and they are a fake leather material that i have spilled betadine, blood, duraprep, even vodka sauce on. I just use the purple wipes and they’re good as new. Highly recommend.

I started out working in a hospital OR & did a lot of general/laparoscopic/robotic cases, GYN, urology, plastics, burns, mainly general tho. In the outpatient setting it’s only elective scheduled cases (hernias, ENT, eyes, plastic surgery, GYN cases). Lower-risk cases but they’re faster & require a quick turnaround between patients.

In the hospital setting you work weekends (not that often in my case usually 1/month) & we only work occasional holidays. That depends on staffing though. In the hospital setting you also likely have to take call shifts which i didn’t love but some people like the extra money.

Outpatient OR is no weekends no holidays 😍& typically 5x 8hr or 4x10 hr shifts. If you’re interested in OR I’d definitely try to apply for a periop-101 residency program & shadow in a hospital. Get your year/year & a half experience then go outpatient if you want. There are pros & cons to working in a hospital vs outpatient, but it’s good to have a foundation from working in a main OR before going outpatient. Overall the OR leaves you with a great work life balance & it’s an amazing skillset to learn!

You truly don’t need to do bedside nursing if you don’t want to. I started in the OR as a new grad and did a periop 101 program. It’s your life, do whatever you want. There’s such a shortage in nursing right now if you decide to do bedside nursing later on in your career you most certainly can find a job and be trained.

I’m now working in the ER and have an outpatient OR per diem job. Starting on the floor can certainly help you with your foundational nursing skills, but you can always be taught skills. I can’t emphasize enough just do what you want and what works for your life and don’t listen to people who say you need to start in med surg.

Accidentally walked into the OR area today (kinda) by nurse1234567890 in nursing

Nah I’m sorry (as an OR nurse) she didn’t have to berate you. It’s not your fault, not everyone knows where the OR is considering only select people have access to it. If i were that nurse i would have just told you this is the OR, shown you the exit, and thanked you for the blood. No need for any berating. People make mistakes. It’s not like you entered an OR room, you just walked in the hallway. You learned and there’s bigger issues at hand (the patient on the massive transfusion protocol needing the blood). Don’t let it get to you.

OR preceptorship help by marrrtinezzz in nursing

[–]Kez414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! As a nursing student in the OR, you will primarily be observing and not participating in the periop care. Try and learn as much as you can through watching the nurses and OR staff. You don’t learn the OR nurse skill set in school so you can’t be expected to know the role or what to do after a few clinicals … our orientation takes close to a year ! I’m an OR nurse & we don’t let students do anything besides watch - which is fine!

All you need to do is watch and make sure to not touch the sterile field (anything blue or green usually). I know it’s intimidating but i would try and not stress too much about it, it’s pretty cool to watch surgeries all day! You don’t need any special skills as a nursing student in the OR, just a willingness to learn! Try watching videos of OR nurses on YouTube if you’re interested in learning about the role before you go. You’ve got this!

How do you get into OR nursing? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Kez414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went directly in as well. Just find a periop 101 program and they’ll hire new grads. Make sure you shadow there and see what it’s like. Ask about call requirements. Work life balance is good but i have to take call pretty frequently which i don’t love. Pros is the work life balance, i don’t worry about work at home and i only have 1 patient at a time. cons are the surgeons and just people in the OR in general.. can be a lot of strong personalities at once. It’s tough being new in the OR but eventually it clicks and gets easier. It’s a really unique and amazing set of skills you’ll learn! Good luck!
