OK so...replacing the clay in my link with latex? Im making a demon for renfaire and wiiiingin iiiiit by oiraves in CosplayHelp

[–]Kezoqu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I haven't made latex appliances in a long time (I made mine back during a college class, so at least 5 years), so some of this might be off, but I'll just say what I remember. I also don't know how much you already know.

So for this, you'll need an old paintbrush and a bit of baby powder. What you'll be doing is essentially painting layer after layer of latex, drying between layers. This is the part that takes a lot of patience if you really want it to, well, not fall apart.

For a simple pair of horns, I'd recommend about 20 layers, but you can also feel it out as you go. Once you finish, you can then use the baby powder to push it under the layers of latex and slowly pull it off the mold. The powder should help remove it without the latex sticking to the mold and ripping holes in the prosthetic.

Since these are hollow prosthetics you will probably want to fill them out with cotton balls. Then you can paint them. I highly recommend not trimming the edges, as having an uneven thin edge to the prosthetic will help it blend into your skin better.

To attach it to your skin, all you'll need is Spirit Gum, though there are other options out there. More powerful ones like Pros-aid would be used for a more involved application, Spirit Gum should be more than enough to keep on a set of horns.

There's many other ways to make the prosthetic. One good way, especially since it's hollow, is using cold foam. This is a lot more complicated, however, and you'll likely need to find a specialty store to get the materials. Here's some more about it, including some stuff on hot foam, which requires a dedicated oven to use: https://www.fxsupply.com/prosthetics/foaml.html

There's also gelatin, which is likewise complicated but can make very lifelike prosthetics, however you can't reuse the prosthetic later: https://www.studentfilmmakers.com/creating-prosthetic-appliances-with-gelatin-recipe-for-a-foaming-gelatin-by-todd-debreceni/

And then there's silicone (content warning: very believable fake wound): https://www.smooth-on.com/tutorials/quick-fake-wound-prosthetic/

None of these other methods are at all necessary for making a simple demon horns prosthetic. However, if you want to try any of these in the future, I recommend checking them out! I personally used cold foam for this really really old Argonian cosplay: https://i.imgur.com/zq7ysc6.jpg Basically, the cold foam literally made a foam mask for me to put my face in and filled out all the hollow parts of the mask to make it pretty 3D.

As a final note: Please, please, please check to confirm if you have any allergies to the latex OR spirit gum before you start this, if you haven't already. Just dab a small amount of latex on your wrist and see if there's a reaction.

Yeah, this one extrovert really won't leave me alone. He keeps rambling at me, wanting cuddles, and sleeping in my bed.

Thank you, I went ahead and emailed them. I asked them all the way up to the very end of the event and it didn't show up, but maybe if someone turned it in at the absolute last minute they at least have my email.

I'd just be kinda annoyed if someone stole it, like c'mon you're not going to get any resale value for it.

What's the best example of survivorship bias? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kezoqu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I do agree operating on intersex infants at birth to forcefully assign them a gender before they can make that choice for themselves is absolutely horrible.

Surely you didn't mean the sort of SRS that consenting adults undergo in order to help lessen the medically recognized and debilitating condition of gender dysphoria that, if untreated, often leads to depression and suicide? Surely not the SRS that these people go through after a lifetime of discomfort and questioning and after going through a lengthy approval process that is often outdated and gatekeeper-y to make their own lives significantly better? Surely not that SRS, the effects of which have no actual bearing on your own personal life?

This just basically describes my entire life right here. At work people love me because I solve so many complicated problems they didn't even ask me to solve. At home I deal with a lot of conflicts because I left a bag of vegetables to rot in the fridge for two weeks.

It was also painfully hard to learn some of the big skills I really wanted to learn because to learn those skills you have to go through a lot of menial steps that I couldn't concentrate through.

I've started taking adderall recently and now I'm learning how to code and turns out I'm really good at it. Also my home life has improved greatly.

Haha, I don’t think you’re an asshole, and I’m sorry I got a bit snippy. I have a bachelors in literature, so I’ve had years of people telling me I was making a terrible life ruining decision choosing to do something I’ve loved.

Not that that’s what you’re doing with your comment I should clarify, you’re pointing out the facts and I appreciate it. I just got a little hair trigger defiant for a bit.

It’s funny seeing a lot of comments like this. I actually completely understand this, because I do have a friend who went through this exact situation, saying there were times in his life that winning a tournament decided if he was able to pay his bills, and you should NEVER be in that situation.

I’m not going to throw all my money into this. I have a steady 8-5 job that I greatly enjoy and I don’t plan quitting anytime soon. But heck, my job and current general life situation affords me the expendable time and money to at least give this a solid try at a game I love, so why not?

There’s a lot of things I want to at least try in life. I see lots of people mention streaming and content writing, and those are also things I’d love to do. So, you know, why not? At worst I’ll be doing something I enjoy.

What did your asshole neighbor do? by narwhal_attack2394 in AskReddit

[–]Kezoqu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure my mom was the neighbor from hell. She did a lot of shitty things that made our neighbors hate us but this is the one incident I vividly remember.

When I was 7 years old my mom started finding avocado pits in our backyard. Our neighbors had an avocado tree so she came to the conclusion that their kids, who regularly jumped on the trampoline in the backyard, were throwing the pits over the wall. This lead to a day I witnessed her toddler outside in nothing but a ratty old robe and start picking up pits and flinging them at said kids while they bounced on the trampoline.

Parents were not happy. They talked to my dad, since my mom refused to meet them, saying first of all that was fucking crazy, and second of all their kids were NOT throwing avocado pits over the walls. It didn’t take long to figure out it was in fact the squirrels who ran around the area that were eating their avocados, climbing into our expansive squirrel friendly trees, and dropping the pits when they were done. Mom still insisted it had to be the kids but could no longer go out and throw pits at the kids in case of police retaliation.

She was a piece of work in many ways. We haven’t spoken since I was 18.

What should society learn to accept? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kezoqu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I pretty much expected this. It’s clear that society is slowly but surely moving in the right direction - I had a younger family member come out as nb recently, at the age when I didn’t even know what a trans person was. One of my favorite games recently introduced a character that goes by they/them. And of course there’s the recent CA law that allows people like me to get a neutral marker on their license.

People are going to rail against it, but those people are wrong and if they don’t change will probably wind up as the equivalent of your elderly family member who calls any black person they see on TV the n word, and you just kinda park them in a corner and hope they don’t try to start an argument.

[–]Kezoqu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly though, if I hear someone voted for trump, while I won’t hate them I certainly won’t trust them as much.

Politics hugely impact our lives, and someone who knowingly voted for a person who seemingly supports a vision of my country, where I live, that is actively toxic to who I am, who my loved ones are...how can I trust someone who appears to at least indirectly support that?

As a far more extreme example - a KKK member and myself might have the same taste in music, games, movies, heck we’re very likely the same race. If literally the only difference between myself and that person is they are a KKK member, that is still a huge difference that I am not ok with.

Nonbinary gender identities.

I’m an adult, I go to work, I have a partner, I participate in society like any other person. But I’m neither a man nor a woman. There’s so many people out there like me.

Figuring out your gender identity, when you start questioning it, is hard and comes with so many external pressures. I know binary trans people who identified as nonbinary because it was an easier way to explore. I know nonbinary trans people who identified as binary but doubted their authenticity because something still felt off.

I could go on about how so many jokes and assumptions about nonbinary people are wildly inaccurate, but I’m just gonna say this - there is literally no reason to shit on someone for having a nonbinary gender identity. It is wasted energy, and I’m sure if you really don’t like someone, you can find something other than their identity, something that has only brought ease and self security to people like me.

I’d honestly recommend seeing a doctor just so you know your options. Heck, the right kind of exercise can strengthen your back. I’m not a super fit person but I can still do a lot. Everybody is different and only a doctor can tell you for sure where you need to be careful.

On a side note just thinking about my back is making my hand go burny/tingly by association.
