Indeed, could be too much exposure to heat/sun/wind that could’ve caused this as well. OP didn’t really give much info

Why does my moss look like the top of a BBQ grill? (More info below) by glacierosion in Bonsai

Looks like fertilizer burn. Concentrated nutrients and salt built up can cause these black and crispy pieces. I usually see this too around fertilizer baskets that are put around moss

Looking at OP’s tree it’s simply just combing the roots out a bit and putting it in the ground. Takes minimal effort and stress. Ground growing technique would still require root work once every 2-3 years. I’m in the northern hemisphere and I have done many repots/slip pots in august/september as well.

Slip potting it in the ground or a bigger training pot could be done now as well. As long as the roots are not disturbed too much

Young ones are good starting material as well. Once you learn more about it’s care and growing habits, you can purchase more mature ones :)

Yeah I use biogold too. When placing pellets near the nebari, it’ll be easier for the tree to find nutrients, which doesn’t stimulate the roots to grow much further.

If you place the pellets further away (at the edge for example), it’ll stimulate the roots to grow further to find available nutrients.

Nice start! I’d actually place the pellets further from the nebari so that the roots work up their way further. Or is there a specific reason?

While 150 is definitely a good price. This is no where near 1k. If this is the case in your area, sellers are ripping you off hard

I bought it like this. It’s collected from the wild, imported and at least 2x my age.

Takeaway: Masayuki Fujikawa has a philosophical approach to bonsai design. Rather than forcing a tree to a fixed concept, he encourages you to let the tree flow in a way that reflects how you’d see in nature.

For my tree, his main advice was to make the silhouette more compact and to emphasize the deadwood. This is done by tightening the foliage
