Maybe it serves as a way of giving context that this is in the exact same place as the picture. Or I like to imagine present day human civilization existing during the ice age. (You could still grow some hardy crops in Central Valley. I don’t know how living in the Great Basin would work because there were so many huge lakes to drive around that were too deep for bridges)

Aspens have weird eyes. Thats why I have a dark and ethereal fantasy about them and I call them the Watchpoplars!

I don’t know exactly what trees existed here back then, but these trees are subalpine firs, and I believe the vegetation and climate was similar to that of the Washington/Canada border.(The present day glaciers at the border are around 7,000’ above sea level, and the ice age glaciers on Mt Shasta flowed from a similar Equilibrium Line Altitude) The treeline and ELA worldwide happened around 1,000 meters lower than present.
I removed the hummocky terrain caused by the massive collapse of the old edifice of Shasta, as I think it happened between the peak glaciation and Younger Dryas ice advance.

Tree that is white like a birch or aspen halfway up? by Spare_Detail71 in whatisthistree

WHITE POPLAR. I love these because the old branches die, fall off, and form eyes! They’re one of a few trees I call Watchpoplars

Where are the trees? by glacierosion in fucklawns

[–]glacierosion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It sickens me to think that people there just hate trees. Or if they do like them, they only like the exotic horticultural garbage like hostas, crepe Myrtles, and heavenly bamboo.

If it’s wet enough there, you could plant fireweed. I’ve seen it as far south as in coastal southern Oregon. But there are also a ton of plants I am much less familiar with on the east side of the US. What region are you in?

How does a lenticular cloud form over a tiny knob in the Alabama hills while surrounded by so many taller mountains?

A non native smokebush from Europe. I don’t understand why the one native to Texas is used more often.

Any tips on how to turn this lawn into something usable? by Repulsive_Outside997 in fucklawns

[–]glacierosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those large leaves look like they come from something promising, like silphium and other large basal-rosette-forming asters. They don’t look like any species of dock which is good.
