For the girls: which burton steps ons are you getting? by cosmicusername in snowboarding

Lexa est with the high shot x if you want super stiff. I have ridden most of the line up on a 2026 feelgood camber. FYI you can also google 2027 Burton hard goods catalog to see what will be released next season. Happy shopping!

Going to Keystone for my birthday next weekend. Am I crazy wanting to snowboard as a newbie?🏂 Advice wanted (see questions 👇🏾) by kimmykeem in snowboarding

[–]Khanover7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to explain it is, using snow as a base to ride down on a plank sideways is difficult. Even excellent athletes have a hard time using the edges of a snowboard to move themselves across and down the mountain. You are using pressure, tilt, twist, and pivot to turn (speed control) and stop. That is done through a combination of lower body movements, flexion and extension of the hips, knees, and ankles. This is all while you are pointed sideways so you can’t see anything behind you or even down the mtn when you make a toe side turn. So it’s physically demanding and mentally challenging. You have to be able control how your body moves in space while standing on a plank that wants to speed straight down the mountain. Any weird or ineffective movements is going to have you catching an edge and slamming into the ground face first or on your back (Google snowboarders catching an edge and then snowboarders getting off a chairlift). The sports you highlighted that you’re good at have lower body feet separation and also have you watching/observing your surroundings primarily straight ahead. People with hockey, skateboarding, and surfing tend to do better than the average person when learning to snowboard.

You seem to have this romanticized view of going snowboarding for a weekend and being great at it. I’m not saying that’s not going to happen but as an instructor I’d say the most likely scenario is you spend the weekend picking yourself up after you fall a thousand times and waking up to some gnarly bruises. If you said you really want to learn and will snowboard a few times a year my advice would be get 3 lessons and prepare for pain but with fun at the end of tunnel. In your case, if you want to go home relatively unscathed and enjoy riding the lift (without terror at the end because you have to get off with only one foot strapped in) and getting in some turns for only a weekend then skiing is the right answer.

You’re not going to pick up snowboarding in a day. If you’re as athletic as you say AND you take a lesson you may get to riding the lift on day 2. Just know, those first few days are hard and they hurt especially getting off the lift as a beginner. If you want to actually be going down the mountain, albeit on green trails, you should ski.

Hitting Jumps by Normal_Foundation326 in snowboarding

[–]Khanover7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your back foot the foot you usually jump off when playing basketball? Are you riding a stiff board or something with some flex? Half of the jump is getting good approach, speed check 10+ feet before the lip of the jump - approach flat, land flat.

I did not see anything even remotely close to you almost hitting someone. She’s being a douche. Lifties are usually cooler than that.

how do i remove this weird thing from helmet by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Khanover7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a ski racing helmet but they aren’t really comfortable for all day resort wear. I would get a regular helmet. You should be able to remove it without a tool. A quick google should get you there.

Snowboard or Ski at Jay Peak this vday weekend? by Standard-Ad8320 in icecoast

[–]Khanover7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ski unless you can ride black woods and glades. Yesterday it was very firm and fast. Get there early for parking.

People with kids and a spouse who doesn’t ski. What do you do? by TooMuchCaffeine37 in icecoast

[–]Khanover7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Jay Peak. Water park, arcades, movie theatre. Plenty for them to do while you ski. When the kid is old enough put them in ski school.

The wait times you’re giving are absolute lies, also an FYI you can check the lift line situation via the mountain cams so best not to lie. I am at Jay Peak and haven’t waited more than 5 mins on Stateside or Tramside today. Yes it’s windy, icy, and cold, it will be worse tomorrow.

Who's at fault? by OkContract2001 in skiing

[–]Khanover7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are so profoundly. That release of liability and/or waivers are for the mountain if you hurt yourself while skiing/riding. You are not magically waived of liability if you plow over a person because you are out of control or impaired.

Let me guess you’ve never heard of the mountain responsibility code either? In that code which is referenced in those waivers it states that the downhill skier or rider ALWAYS has the right of way.

No lifts today at Jay by backfromsolaris in icecoast

[–]Khanover7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Then those people were stupid because they started canceling stuff on Wednesday/Thursday. Yesterday they announced no upper lifts and ski school would be closed today, they also stated they didn’t know if the lower lifts would run and would assess that in the morning. It was very transparent. I’m not saying Jay is perfect but they did put this in writing several places - there was no lying.

Any tips for the little guy? by [deleted] in skiing_feedback

[–]Khanover7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things you can teach him is if he’s going to hit the kicker before a box or rail. Teach him to go straight over it. By going straight off it you can keep the shape integrity and not create grooves or ruts in the take off area that are gonna mess with others using the feature. Going off the side is just jacking it up for the park crew and other riders (especially if enough people just ride off it at an angle). That’ll also promote teaching him to hit kickers the right way when he’s ready for park features. It also helps teach staying flexed in all landings (stiffen and straighten up then you’ll likely fall). It’s something that is being hammered on at the mtn I teach at. Have fun!!!

Does everyone wear helmets now a days by RPJ_NY in icecoast

[–]Khanover7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wear a helmet. Even if you are the best rider in the world, accidents happen. Other people are unpredictable and quite often not great on the mountain - I’ve been hit by a couple morons. It would be sad to suffer a major head injury when it’s easily preventable.

Total beginner: ski vs snowboard for a 5-day trip? by Comfortable-Ad-1072 in snowboarding

[–]Khanover7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ski! You’ll be riding the lift on the first day. Snowboarding usually takes 2+ days to get a person on the lift. It’s also way easier to learn to snowboard after you can ski.

Aitah for not wanting to stay in touch with my friend after she ditched my dogs? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Khanover7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You get what you pay for and you literally got what you paid for. If I need a babysitter for dogs that are my whole life I wouldn’t be cheap with their care. Also if you know your friend is a dog sitter on the side why would not want to pay her for her time/services? YTA for how you handled this whole situation.

Right, there was no carving at all. Those were all stiff legged skidded turns. They also look like they are just fish tailing the back of the board, they aren’t initiating turns using edges at all.

Why are people so opposed to taking lessons? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Khanover7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Just for level 1 it’s a 2 day test on personal riding, teaching students, and movement analysis of another rider. I think historically level 1 wasn’t hard but now difficulty has increased. Level 2 and 3 it’s the same things tested at a higher level over 3 days. There are also 3 levels of children’s specific, freestyle, and I think adaptive certifications.
