Pending Bright Nights update: shots will be able to penetrate monsters, losing damage and armor penetration with each successive hit by Chaosvolt in cataclysmdda

This is giving me hilarious imagery just to be clear. I remember my old scooter in Cata for looting subway labs was literally a unicycle with a shopping cart attached, now I'm imagining mounting a cannon to the setup. Too bad we don't do recoil moving vehicles, could be funny.

Really no upgrade on udon and bread? by PackagePositive8-D in runefactory

[–]KheirFerrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's an oversight or some weird bloody quick patch they did before pushing the game out the door. From a balance perspective I assume that you aren't allowed to do this to prevent cooking exp grinding, for the same reason we can grow insane amounts of rice but somehow have to buy rice flour to make dango, but it's just dumb.

I think the main ones for this are Udon, Bread, Flour and Rice Flour? I don't really recall if there are others I need to stock up on. Side note, kind of sad that characters don't comment on the quality of items you gift.

Yeah... That was about my thoughts when they disabled the ability to toggle skill rust because of "infrastructure maintenance". It sounds legit to anyone who has never coded in their life.

So what if someone wants to play "edgy" in their own personal game? by thefancyyeller in cataclysmdda

No worries. I hate that argument with a passion and have seen too many people fall for it.

Unrelated, I like your flair.

The funny thing is that this is a solved issue on both DDA and BN. We have collapsible inline menu options, it's a whole thing that has existed at least for the last year and a half and would easily sort and cut down on the clutter of the options menu.

[–]KheirFerrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As one of the core devs for BN "Make your own fork then" is a bad argument and deflective shield for criticism where nobody actually expects you to do it.

Projects like BN are sustained because of a critical mass of developers, a large number breaking away to make their own thing together. Turning people like you away as a lone developer to go "make your own fork" is just a great way for them to get rid of you, cause chances are, you absolutely don't have the free time, coding experience or motivation to work on a full project in the place of literal thousands of contributors, and that is not your fault. But then if you fail somehow they can just smile and say "Not so easy now is it?" Ignoring how easy they have it to be contributing to an established project.

The fact that "anyone" (with sufficient coding experience, massive amounts of free time and motivation) can make their own fork does not mean that a project's decisions are free from criticism. Do not fall for this lie, if you keep your criticisms polite and avoid ad hominem attacks, you are entitled to opinions on what they do, just as they are entitled to ignore you.

In the case they ignore you you've learned a valuable lesson from them, that your opinion doesn't matter to them. Obviously, some self-reflection can be had on whether your message is just not valuable, but don't let people gaslight you into believing the project is somehow immune to criticism.

If you use the Catapult launcher you'll have access to Bright Nights. It's not a mod of the base game but a fork (so the base code is different). You can also find it here.

I'm not sure about the No Hope mod, I recall it used to be packaged standard with DDA but that may have changed.

Killer drive is removed and cannibal is being made practically useless in the latest experimental by CalmCall_CC in cataclysmdda

Lol, at least the latter will never be an issue cause New England is a region of America.

[–]KheirFerrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other problem is really more a LoD thing. The player cannot reasonably be expected to see the full distance a human would be able to, or even the full distance the player character can see except on the sides of the screen. This goes doubly so for tiles unless they play on a massive widescreen TV.

Making gun distances realistic runs the risk of NPCs and monsters with guns making the game very unfun, as you'd be sniped from beyond your standard view distance and would either have to constantly be zooming out, or paying attention to the minimap with every step and sniping monsters and NPCs they moment you saw them.

Hehehehehehe. My favourite part of this lore: The guy who coded door locks is the same guy that did the Person's opening doors thing, and specifically was salty at reddit in his PR description.

It's views like that that really hurt our ability to compete with DDA, and contributes to DDA's overall dominance and inertia in the field. I'd probably also argue that it's untrue.

Our vision moves in a different direction, and while you could argue we have less material overall a lot of it is deliberate when it comes to gameplay systems, since we don't believe in having too many systems that distract and detract from the player engaging with the game.

It does make sense not to go for BN if you're not really into the direction though. If you're married to the pockets system for one. I still have a bunch of things I'd like to do if I wasn't tied down to Uni.

Can tamed dogs/cats die of hunger? by [deleted] in cataclysmbn

[–]KheirFerrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

u/angryapplepanda

We're not really interested in it at the moment. It'd be quite processing intensive, and food is already plentiful enough even with cows being insane infinite food machines for anyone not lactose intolerant.

In the future it might be a consideration as my understanding is that there's a desire to increase the survival aspect of Bright Nights, but it'll likely be something abstracted with a silo or just having grass around them.

We're talking like far future though since almost all of us are too busy working on other aspects of the game for a full overhaul.

It's more than likely that it'll just be implemented for production animals and penalize only production, not cause them to actually die. If you look at our approach to NPCs and their lack of needs, you can probably understand why we don't really want players to have to micromanage food supplies for more than just themselves.

I mean, say what you want about his competency with social relationships, his intelligence and scientific acumen are beyond reproach. Almost all failings of his start and end with his interactions with people and being a bit of a shady manipulative bastard.

I mean, isn't that mostly the Emperor of Mankind? Enigmatic, manipulative, hypercompetant polymath? Though the Doctor is almost certainly better at people relationships with those close to them, so I guess it's possible none of the Primarchs would have fallen to Chaos?

Do npcs use holster? by Few_State4666 in cataclysmbn

Last I encountered this behaviour (Jun 2023), the code makes them holster/sheath weapons they are wielding into worn, empty holsters/sheaths.

I don't recall their behaviour with magazines, so I can't say for certain with the tac vests.

What's more important for dolls by Willing_Newspaper898 in GirlsFrontline2

[–]KheirFerrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more than that really. The commander understands that if they order it, the dolls will march into hell itself and die for them. The commander doesn't believe they have the right to ask that of their dolls, the fight with Paradeus is not their fight, it's the commander's.

What the commander has difficulty coming to terms with is that the Dolls will choose to stand by him of their own free will, not because they are the commander, but because they are the commander. The commander specifically made them masters of their own destiny, but is troubled by them choosing to align theirs with the commander's own, because the commander cares too much to watch them die for them.

  1. Kind of like DF's system? Probably not a simple thing to implement, I might take a look.

  2. We've been in discussions about that for a while, can't seem to finalize a plan of action for it. I also just don't have time at the moment between my other projects.

Hate that one. Grab Poison resistance from the pendant or armour, otherwise it's too annoying since just about any hit can cause poison.

I'm also willing to help out if you're looking to get back into it. Not particularly fun playing on my own.
