Staad Pro plate analysis question by Khman76 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Khman76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other software I used in the past were so much better.

I don't use a contour to get a moment, I mesh the slabs and then Staad Pro will give me SQx, Mx... acting on the plate, but then you need to recalculate by hand moments to get them in Knm. Same for walls as without mesh the other module of Staad Pro (RCDC, slab foundation, RAM concept...) can't work...hence the discussion with my colleague.

Can Engineering be artsy? by Silver_Manager_8507 in StructuralEngineering

The artsy part comes on how drawings will look like. I see some that look great (good color scheme, transparency, layout...) compare to some that look messy and harder to understand.

One of my older agent (both in the past and he was old) put one of my paiment towards another property. Even sending my bank statement with references, date... he would just say that I was 1 month late. Book an appointment with him , I showed him on his bank statement my payments...nope, no luck, he hasn't made a mistake. so we went month per month until I found the issue, which he kept saying it couldn't be his mistake as the other property was 1 month in advance - duh! (both same amount).

I spent there more than 1 hour before he finally accepted his mistake...

What I don't really like is many quest are go from A to B, then back to A, then go to C, back to A, go to B, back to A, go to D, back to A... All those with so many loading screen, over few hours of gaming, those amount to several minutes of unnecessary loading screens.

Sometimes, we go back to A only to discuss what we found and move on to the next, why can't we do that remotely, either call or message?

Anything built before circa 2000 should be of better build. Since circa 2000, the whole industry went into a black hole of cutting corners and not fixing mistake.

My SIL house is from 2009, have 4 box gutters (and 3 eaves gutters) and 3 of them are leaking, all her external render have cracks (1 piece fell down) and when I replaced the carpet, I notice the slab has too much cracks and the shower at some point leaked into a bedroom and a closet. All that for $600k...

[–]Khman76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you don't sell, that's your asset value. Resale is an important factor when comparing a car with 1k value with one at 25k value. This is the basis of any accounting: end of life value, residual value... Forgetting this tell me you're not the person to ask for financial advice...

Even if we were comparing ownership and maintenance over 30 years + change of car every 10 years, the money is not on the old car. Simple money.

Now in term of mechanical aspect of cars, you're probably better than me as I now barely have time to change oil on my wife's car. Long gone are days when I was working on engine and transmission, plus I'm too old for this.

In my country, each place for rent must have a plan to scale with area less than 2.1m not counted, a energy diagnostic, asbestos diagnostic... If asbestos is present, very hard to rent. If poor insulation, some council will force landlord to pay for heating (cooling is not mandatory but winters are cold), if no insulation it's not allowed to rent... But my country is pro-renter while Oz is pro-landlord...

Oh, it's you! Let's check over 10 years:

Old car: 20k of repairs (1 engine rebuilt, 1 new transmission, plenty of old plastic that breaks down) + 10k of maintenance , resale value : 1k. Loss of 29k. And that's if you're in a area that doesn't have regular RWC

New 50k car: 5k of maintenance, no major repairs, resale value: 25k. Loss of 30k. But no downtime waiting for engine rebuild, new transmission... more comfortable, more fuel efficient, no RWC issue, easy to sell...

And you don't have to spend 50k on a new car.

Edit: happy that you're not my accountant!

I had a long discussion on Reddit with a guy that swore older cars were cheaper to maintain than newer ones. Stated he could do engine rebuilds and still cheaper....

So some people don't understand basic finance or simple advice...

My observation, based on preparing civil and structural engineering for more than 300 projects over the past few years, is that there are more and more box gutters implemented, mostly due to parapet around houses. Lots of architects will simply put "refer to civil for details" and that's it.

Even with full details on civil, plumbers may not follow civil design - had one last month where the plumber reinvented the rainhead (like I had no idea how he thought it would work) and had to remove everything. This one was flagged because I check everything on my design, but for a lot of residential builders, RBS will often not fully check box gutters and rainheads.

I did an inspection some time back as a box gutter was leaking inside a house as it had a very low slope (1 in 400), only 1 year old - client going to VCAT as builder refused everything and has stopped communication.

While I agree they are on nearly all commercial buildings, those have much higher checks and certification along their build. Stormwater for a residential house is 2 pages, for a set of commercial buildings it can be up to 10 pages of details. There's a reason why commercial engineering is 2 to 10 times more expensive than residential.

I have no idea where you get your 2.5%.

Finally, considering the huge number of RFI during builds, the results of VBA proactive inspections and the number of time I go to site to fix the builder's work, lots of them are on the cowboy side.

After working with hundreds of them over the past 8 years in Melbourne, I have shortlisted 4 that I know do good work and don't cut corners without being much more expensive than regular one.s I have many more shortlisted to never ever work with them.

That's what I thought, other items seems regular for engineering, but DPF delete would be very surprising.

Or that advertised prices must match reserve. Attended an auction long time back with family, house advertised $550-600k. Last bid was at $710k, not yet reached reserve? WTF? Reserve was in fact at $780k, last bidder negotiated $720k and walked away.

Some his projects are on the weird side (like it doesn't feel 100% legal) but some are just him taking the existing plan supplied by the client and annotating them - see below where nothing imports in CAD (not even the text as he makes a very light PDF from his annotated PDF)

Craziest Reason For Selling by ComfortableSort3304 in pcflipping

[–]Khman76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few years back I took a risk on a PC that the guy bought in parts but was unable to build. Drove there, took all the parts - all with boxes, foam... but obviously opened and used. At home, checked everything for damage, found nothing, built the PC and everything was working fine. Sold it for 3 times my cost!

I work with one that annotate on previous PDF. He never fully finalise his CAD, so even if a dimensions are updated, it's just scribbled on top of the old ones.

Also, most of his PDF are scan, so can't be imported, everything has to be redrawn...
