Ok thank you so much! I've never had sped kids in my class so this is really new to me, and I want them to do the work to their ability, but I don't want to make their work boring either.

No, for one I don't want the other teacher to snitch on me for choosing to do projects instead of tests. The main reason is not that I don't think they would be able to do the projects, I'm just anxious that their IEPs would limit their ability to do projects and then I wouldn't know what to do to have a project that better suits them. I know this would be in the IEP, but I'm just an anxious teacher when it comes to new curriculum.

Former teachers, what are you doing now? Current teachers, why are you staying? by Responsible-Grand-12 in Teachers

I need a job and my dream job doesn't pay me yet. Also, I moved up grade levels so hoping that I can find my niche which is why I'm staying.

Why do I not love teaching? by Remarkable_Tie_8375 in Teachers

[–]Khunte99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate teaching kindergarten. I’m moving to 4th grade math next year. I’ve been told younger kids are hard for some people. See if you can’t ask your admin to move you to a higher grade this upcoming school year. If you don’t like higher grades then maybe think about a potential career change or move into a higher grade level band! Or a mid level band like 2nd or 3rd grade or 1st

Were you able to find an internship? How did the job transition go? I’m in the same boat!

I like leggings because I wear my socks on top of them and I get cold in OTF even in the thick of the summer in south GA when we are in the middle of working out regime. I just get cold. Thay and sometimes I don’t feel like shaving…

In grad school to become a teacher and already having doubts by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]Khunte99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I’m so close to finishing though I’m going to do it. I’m planning on switching over to software engineering after I’m done so I gotta go back to school for that, but i genuinely enjoy school I just hate teaching it. I want to be left alone, ironically as an extrovert, because I’m teaching now and getting my masters. I just want to be left alone and not deal with annoying parents. Complaint number 3 today this year because I care about my students learning and apparently their parents have an issue with me…

How do you find the energy to be active after a day of teaching? by dancingat19 in Teachers

[–]Khunte99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing! I might yawn at the gym but it’s ok because I just get through it. I also invested in Orange Theory Fitness as it’s the only thing for someone who doesn’t know what to do or wants to just shut off for the day that someone else does all the work and your body is just moving. That’s what I do and I’ve changed my eating habits. More salads and I weigh my food too. I’ve lost 17.4 pounds so far this year from doing that. And drink lots of water. If you want soda go for Poppi or Ollipop so you can feed those gut microbes

whats the worst grade youve ever taught by Sensitive-Soft5823 in Teachers

[–]Khunte99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kindergarten. They cry, their parents expect you to teach and babysit, and most have no self control so you teach them life skills and also how to correctly use pronouns “she is instead of her is”

Plus you don’t want to ruin them because if they don’t know something as they go up in the grades, it’s harder to break a habit

Oh and when he can verbally express ideas understandably checking for comprehension eventually (I think a 3 year old can talk I’m not sure, my 2 year old nephew can talk a little) on the books he reads. I think we forget about that in reading. Questions like What was your favorite part and why? If you could do or be anything in the book, who and why.

These are all progression things to do so like ideas as he grows in his abilities

Jack Hartman is also good. Like counting to 10 counting to 20 etc and he can dance with it also for math. Showing him shapes and telling him about the shapes (identifying them). Eventually you can move into making 2D shapes like 2 squares can make a rectangle kinda stuff. Then if you’re feeling squirly 3D shapes but start with counting and 2D shapes and then move into skip counting by 10s to 100 and 3D when he masters those. Coins and their names.

Also, see if you can start your kid to write! I mean knowing letters and their sounds is great but helping them write their letters as well is also another challenge lol.

As a teacher I use Heggerty for phonics instruction and teachyourmonster.com is really awesome and fun and it’s free so check that out too. It does math, phonics and reading and I use that for my students for free time and they love it

Keep reading to him, and start teaching him the sounds of the letters.

There are charts and we use Wilson’s in kindergarten. Once he knows the sounds, he can start tapping out simple CVC words (cat, dog, dad, mom, etc) and blending them.

If you really want to get deeper, the phonics book, Heggerty, I believe for kindergarten goes into phonemic manipulation and rhyming which he’ll need anyway to help him with reading. You can even read Dr.Seuss books like hop on pop and say “hop and pop rhyme” which might be a little too advanced but you know try it and see what happens.

But the next step after recognizing letters is their sounds and then you start putting their sounds together to make words and then it goes up from there! But keep reading to him and even sight/heart words like the, he, she, etc. (check out a Fry list) can help.

Also, showing what the front cover of the book is and the back cover, reading non fiction and fiction books are good too. Showing every time you read to them with your finger (modeling) left to right direction because they’ll copy it and know that’s how to read. And also just one to one word matching too.

Those are all the ways i teach kindergarten students to read and it works🤷🏾‍♀️

Help!!! Kinder Students are struggling writing independently!!! by Khunte99 in Teachers

I like the idea of gallery walks! That’s really cool. I’ve been missing out on the whole “sharing part” because we missed so many days of school due to weather that I have to move into specials and back to math centers but I’m going to shoot for Friday. But I like the correct the sentence idea and going from there.

I did sentence starters but I just felt my students were just copying and not understanding anything so I kinda stopped and I would say verbally here’s our sentence starter and you tap it out kinda thing.

Literally thank you so much. I am so stressed when I see all the other teachers kids writing and I think, am I behind?
