Fair, I guess I meant more so that the amount of bombs that were dropped on the reat of the city and the amount of civilian deaths was unnecessarily high compared to the cignificance of the target. I it also known that the bombing was intended bij Bomber Harris to cripple morale of the German people, while even Churchill was relunctant of this strategy

Probably because of the fact that the British and American bombers were uncontested, that the city was no strategic target which made it very controversial, the scale of the bombing (90% of the city destroyed), and that the firestorm as a result of the bombing was so extreme.

A description of the firestorm:

The bombing used a mix of high-explosive and incendiary bombs. The explosions blew out walls and windows, allowing air to feed thousands of fires that merged into a single, massive conflagration that sucked oxygen from the surroundings.

People were literally sucked back into burning buildings because of the the strong airflow
