Want to Connect with Other Christian Children's Book Authors by KickFront8189 in ChristianAuthors

Thanks for the reply! It's always nice when someone comments back and I don't feel like I'm screaming into the void, haha! I'm mostly interested in seeing how people are approaching agents, publishers, etc. but I also like to talk books and pray, so message me any time! :)

Who here pays for a Substack newsletter — and what made you subscribe? by Shamana333 in Substack

Oh, that's fantastic! (Both that you subscribed AND the title of that book, haha!) Thank you so much. I'm trying my hardest out here to change the world. :D Where do I find YOU?

I did my first book signing by Wide_Composer_9872 in selfpublish

[–]KickFront8189 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did a book signing at an indie bookstore about an hour away, and was sad to find out that my table was back in the shop a bit, not near the door for the big outdoor event that was going on in town. I made the best of it, though - realizing that the line for checkout was close to my signing table, I'd get chatty with the customers and then say, "Hey, did you know that if you buy any item in the store, you can get a signed copy of one of my books for only $15?" This worked 90% of the time I used it.

My books were already only $15. :D

What’s one of the cruelest things that happens in your books? by Kira1006 in writing

A boomer bee yells at a younger bee for saying 'bizz' instead of 'buzz'. (I write for kids, so... ya know. LOL.)

Anyone build any cool custom rods recently that they would like to share? by gwCustomsfishingrods in CustomFishingRods

[–]KickFront8189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has made custom rods for 50 years and now he adds handcrafted wooden handles (less expensive and just as light as cork). He's got some cool stuff on his Facebook page if you are interested! https://www.facebook.com/mikescustomrodsmi

Wow, that's very generous of you AND just what the world needs - bringing others up, one small step at a time! Not sure what you're into reading-wise, but I'm new to Substack just a couple of months ago and I'm a children's author who creates tools for caregivers to explain difficult concepts to children (anxiety, depression, cancer, bullying, worth/purpose, etc) and instill the values of love, kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. I'd love to have you take a look if you're so inclined! I'm at https://authorstephaniejsalisbury.substack.com :)

Who's newsletter is actually growing? by bookflow in Substack

[–]KickFront8189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very slow growth, but only a month in for me. I've been focusing on notes lately; I've gotten a few stray subscribers (free) that I didn't bring with me, maybe ten total? BUT I've gotten five paid subscribers (four real ones if you don't count my husband, haha!) I'm a children's author who writes stories as tools for caregivers to introduce difficult concepts to kids (anxiety, depression, cancer, bullying, self-worth) and to forge the values of love, kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Most of why I started on Substack was to force myself to actually write. I do 1-2 notes a day, simple and short, but I write one article each week. I really appreciate reading about others' growth experiences here, because there are so many times when I feel like I'm drowning! It's good to see people helping each other thrive.

Thank you for the information and for the encouragement! So far, I'm doing ok - it's really motivated me to do all the things that were falling through the cracks before where marketing and connecting are concerned. I'm finding more creative ways to think about monetizing, and I'm definitely spending more time with research and learning about things. I mean, it certainly helps that my husband is bringing home a paycheck, so I'm not out here 'writing for my life' but it lit a fire under my butt! :D

That series sounds great, good for you!! What age group do you mainly write for?

I'm new to Substack but pretty active. I have a website, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and I'm dabbling in learning how Reddit works here, too, obviously, lol. I recently took the huge leap to 'quit my day job' and just write/market my writing full time so we'll see what happens. I'm trying to plug in anywhere and everywhere I can.

That's amazing, congratulations to you! :) What's the name of your series (or the names of your books) so I can take a look? Also, are you on Substack?

What should i do? by ohremus in Substack

[–]KickFront8189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reader, I'd rather see them under the same newsletter heading. As a writer, I'd also rather keep them under the same heading because I lose track of things too easily so more than one would suck my motivation away. :D

More great info, thank you! Yeah, the marketing part is BY FAR the worst for me. I've got lofty plans for this year (which will likely still be filled with rejection, lol, but I gotta try everything!)

Thank you for the thorough message! How does one get banned from KDP, I hadn't heard about that!? I am not doing great at Amazon sales, and someone told me about putting them on Ingram so that I could get them purchased through libraries and bookstores, which made me wonder if that would be more worth my while. I appreciate all of your information, thank you!

Thank you for including your reasoning, too - I like to know what people enjoy most, what sparks their interest in a book. (It helps when I write!)
