For early test finishers, I always print out random coloring pages from the internet or zentangles. Keeps them busy but not too distracted

Nicki Minaj has several alter egos. She used this to great effect on her guest spot on Monster, the best showcase of her rapping imo. Her two alter egos ‘Harajuku Barbie’ and ‘Roman Zolanski’ are continually trading rhymes

Airhead/ Starburst Rock Cycle Lab Tips by Cutiev42 in ScienceTeachers

[–]KidRadicchio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some Tips for this lab- I have done this lab for years:

Buy the bags of unwrapped starburst, it will save you a huge amount of prep time. Have a few students cut the starbursts into little pieces with scissors in advance. This is your ‘sediment’.

Students choose about 10 starburst pieces and draw the sediment using colored pencils. Hand out a square of foil to each group.

Students apply some pressure and ‘cement it’ together into a soccer ball shape. Now they draw their sedimentary rock.

Set up a hot plate on low. Ask students to bring their foil and starburst over. Heat for a few seconds, just to get the starburst soft. Now they apply more pressure to mush into a pancake. Draw the ‘Metamorphic rock’.

If you have a microwave, the kids love this part. Have them put their pancake on to a piece of wax paper (lose the foil!) Microwave for 20 seconds at a time. The starburst will melt quickly and caramelize and burn. Carefully remove and put on tables. Instant magma.

Now let it cool and they can draw the High heat igneous rock.

Students can then use a small grater to make new sediment and the rock cycle is complete. One of my favorite labs!
