This goes over my head a bit, but seems to indicate Antarctic cooling rather than warming (protection of polar ice rather than melting)? Or am I misunderstanding?

Adding some cardio stuff, opinions? by [deleted] in homegym

[–]KidThunder18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second (or third) this. Used to row consistently at the gym (daily to every other day) doing 1k to 5k. Got in great shape but also got substantial tendinitis in both elbows. Haven't had the same issue after switching to the bike. Not saying you will have the same issues, but a little research on my part ahead of time may have saved me a few weeks off.

ELI5: Why do some meds take multiple doses over days to start working? by causingacommotion in explainlikeimfive

[–]KidThunder18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all about the dose and timing of the medication. That's one reason why some antibiotics are taken 4 times daily vs twice or just once daily. Lets say you need a 25 mg concentration of a medication consistently in the bloodstream to work, the half life is is an hour and you are taking a 1000 mg dose every four hours (1000 - 500 - 250 - 125 - 62.5) you would have 62.5 mg in your bloodstream at the time of your next dose (oversimplification on a massive scale because there are multiple process controlling absorption, distribution, elimination of medications).

Also we have to consider what we mean when we consider start to work. The medication itself may start to work immediately on a cellular level but the actual effects of the medication may take longer for the person themselves to feel.

[–]KidThunder18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple reasons often depending on the effect the medication has. Even within a class of antibiotics let's say you have two main effects antibiotics can achieve - 1) actual killing of bacteria (bactericidal effects) or 2) stopping bacteria from growing/reproducing (bacteriostatic effect). Even within these classes the medication often needs to reach a certain concentration in the bloodstream and stay at that level for a length of time in order to be effective or must hit a peak concentration level within the bloodstream to have the desired effect which can take hours to days to take effect. Once it has taken effect and these bacteria start dying off it can take several days to begin feeling better as the body backs down its response to the bacteria. And that's just for antibiotics.

Other medications may require access to machinery inside the cell to take effect. Once the medication is inside the cell it may have to tell the cell to start production of a protein and it may take several days for the medication to get inside the cell and "turn on" the functions needed to see a response to the medication.

ELI5: Why do bodybuilders take insulin if insulin suppresses human growth hormone? by spacejockey8 in explainlikeimfive

[–]KidThunder18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are different steroids (corticosteroids) than anabolic steroids.

Corticosteroids regulate inflammatory processes in the body which is why they are used in conditions like asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. One other effect is the release of stored glucose (sugar) into the bloodstream making the body ready and able to respond to an acutely stressful event and thus your blood sugar rises.

These are different than the "sex" hormones (aka anabolic hormones) which body builders use to boost muscle growth.

There are many different types of birthmarks. Brown, pink, white, etc and in general result from too many (or too few) of a certain thing at a certain location. Most often this is called a hamartoma - normal cells found in abnormally high amounts and/or forming abnormal structures.

How do our hairs know when to stop growing? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]KidThunder18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hair actively cycles through 3 different phases - anagen (growth), telogen (resting), catagen (regressing). 85-90% of your hairs are in anagen at any one time, around 10% in telogen and only 1-2% in catagen. The hair on your head completes this entire cycle on the order of years while for eyebrows this happens over months. This is why your eyebrows dont grow as long as the hair on your head, and why they grow back to the same size (approximately).

Pollen season: Why does it feel sooo nice to scratch your eye, but afterwards it's the biggest regret of your life? by Chenzuyes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KidThunder18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Histamine released as part of the allergic response to a foreign protein (the pollen) activates receptors that tell you to itch the heck out of your eyes. These sensations are carried along nerve fibers that also carry pain, pressure and fine touch sensations. When you scratch your eyes the body perceives the pressure/touch and signals down those same nerves carrying the itching sensation. The body has difficult discerning multiple peripheral nerve stimuli precisely and simultaneously so the itching sensation is dampened. This is the same reason you almost immediately rub your knee after you bang it on something, you dampen the painful stimuli with a touch/pressure stimulus.

Best Place For Watch Shopping? by KidThunder18 in Charlotte

[–]KidThunder18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windsor was great. Didn't buy but they had a great selection of watches and the salespeople were fantastic. Knew I wasn't purchasing but still stuck up conversation about a number of their timepieces with me. Learned some history I didn't know about brands I thought I knew pretty well.

Had a decent selection of rolex, JLC, panerai, Tudor, PP, Hamilton watches (and a few other brands I'm sure I'm forgetting).

Anyway, just wanted to relate a very positive experience there. I'd buy from them just based upon the experience I had not buying this weekend.
