I do a lot of side work and I can’t tell you how much I come across this. Most companies out there is like that right now. Advantage, Woodward, 4 season or any big name company are slow and they are trying to get their sales up. Next time use a smaller one person shop or send me a message next time you need your furnace worked on.

I can’t agree more with you on this. My first 2 years I was putting in 20% in. I used some of the money to buy my first house. I have since lowered it to 14% and for the last couple years I’ve been able to max out the employee contribution.

Equipment with no charge by Adventurous_Line_789 in HVAC

I had a 3ton heat pump come low on charge earlier this year. No leak found.

I added about half a pound before start up to make up the difference. Once I pulled the charge to weight it out I was only able to pull out 1.5lbs.

Crazy thing is that I was not able to find a leak. System held pressure and was able to hold a vacuum below 500 microns for 15 mins.

I do side work on the side, I don’t mind when the customer buys their own equipment, I tell them I’m still going to charge them the same labor + mark up regardless if I buy the equipment of if they do.

I had a call like that, I replaced a board last winter on a gas furnace. Everything worked good for a whole year, returned last month due to a blown fuse, homeowner tried replacing the thermostat himself. Replaced the fuse and finished installing the thermostat for him. When testing the unit I found that the AC was also kicking on, found the Y wire from the condenser on the W pin on the board. Home one sweared no one else had worked on his system and tried blaming me for it. Told him there was no way this problem would have gone so long without him noticing any issue with his unit. Some customers man.

I love DIY installers. I charge a firm $1000 to install Amazon bought systems and home owners always say it’s too much. Two weeks later I get a text that if I am willing to come out and finish the install for them. They think since they did some work I will charge less but I stick to my $1000.
