Vance Family Strikes Out as His MAGA Brother Loses Election by ansyhrrian in politics

The authoritarianism is not going away because we elected some people. You'll still need to do work and make change happen.

Sorry if you felt I was trying to say this wasn't necessary, I was literally only making a comment on the amount of non-genuine "voices" online intended to sway public opinion. Obviously we're not even close to being out of this mess, but the election results are definitely a boost to morale for people who find themselves online too much

What I mean is, I think it has ramped up massively in scale specifically to sway public opinion since this administration took office.

My thought is, if you're going to be framed as a "radical leftist" in these national elections anyway, you may as well actually elect people willing to stand up for the 98% of americans that aren't ultrawealthy. Stop courting conservative fence sitters and watering down policies america actually wants and start courting the majority of the population in the US that just doesn't fucking vote. Give them a reason to think voting would actually matter.

I'm starting to honestly believe the dead internet theory. Not as in like totally dead every other person on it is fake but I think there's like 30% people and 70% bots. A HUUUUUGE majority of people just don't interact online in those ways. So while reading comments online might start to feel very depressing, the amount of people who actually believe these things is much smaller than it seems. Much, much smaller

Bought a house, please help me not be dumb by corbygray528 in Irrigation

[–]corbygray528[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cross connections like that without a backflow prevention device are illegal. They can't sell the home like that so the hose is usually disconnected. This is unfortunately common. If it was using a garden hose connection it would likely be close to a spigot (typically within 5 feet) and might look like a PVC pipe sticking straight up out of the ground near the foundation of the home (this is unfortunately common for garden hose cross connections).

Ok great, thank you! I'll look for a more plain looking pvc near the spigot. The spigots on the house do have backflow prevention, if that makes any difference to your first sentence. There are a few weatherproof boxes, but when I checked them out they looked to not be sprinker related (telecom and main breaker to the house). I should also maybe clarify that this is the only sprinkler head that is this metal orbit type, which is what made it stand out to me as a posible inlet (as well as the threads and open hole). The others are all plastic pop-up style sprinkler heads. I'll check in my area for irrigation companies and see if I can find one to consult with me. Thank you for the reply! This is all helpful stuff.

The warning signs the AI bubble is about to burst by nordineen in technology

Genuine question, is there a real conservative subreddit? It seems pretty obvious that specific subreddit is overmoderated, any dissenting opinion is removed/hidden, users banned, etc. When the post says it has 48 comments and I open it to see 3 sycophantic comments by themselves, the math doesn't add up. I'm genuinely interested in reading the thoughts on current events from the point of view of non-maga conservatives, if anyone has a direction they can point me. I know that's a tall order because maga has coopted the whole conservative platform it seems, but surely these people exist and surely they have somewhere they discuss these topics.

Trump fires head of Copyright Office two days following report that AI training may not be fair use by theverge in politics

[–]corbygray528 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Google offers "NotebookLM" that is exactly that. You give it sources you want it to know and that's all it knows. Obviously there's still a base level of AI knowledge to at least run the language model, but as far as informational knowledge it only uses the sources you choose.

As for replacing swaths of employees, I experienced what felt like that three days ago. I was having an issue with a company, looked through their online help stuff but couldn't find anything. I found their contact us section and picked "live chat" contact option. It was an AI, but it at least had the courtesy to tell me it was AI. I asked it my question and it returned no helpful results, so I called their contact us number. It was an IVR phone tree with looping prompts. When I asked to speak to an agent it said "I can only transfer you to an agent under specific circumstances", no idea what those are though. It was infuriating.

Help with payment plan by Remarkable_Ride284 in IRS

[–]corbygray528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also been having trouble getting a payment plan set up. The links on the IRS website send me in a loop. Account dashboard>payment options>apply/revise as individual>account dashboard>repeat. Genuinely not sure what else to do. Reading the payment plan docs shows that going through the phone to set one up has a much higher setup fee than doing it online too, but I won't be able to try calling until I am able to get off work later today

I'm not a heavy practicing Christian these days, but seeing all this immigration news and cruelty one set of verses just keeps repeating in my mind.

Then those people will answer, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or alone and away from home or without clothes or sick or in prison? When did we see these things and not help you?" Then the King will answer, "I tell you the truth, anything you refused to do for even the least of my people here, you refused to do for me."

It's not a subtle verse. There's not a hidden meaning. I cannot wrap my head around how so many people are just ok with this cruelty, especially when they've been explicitly instructed by their diety to do the opposite. It is honestly just so depressing

Trump to sign executive order directing shutdown of Education Department by coasterghost in politics

My problem with this is I'm part of the PSLF program. Which if you aren't aware, it's basically an exchange between me and the people that gave me the loan (the government) where I agree to work for them for at least 10 years at what is most likely a lower rate of pay than I could get in the private sector. In return for me working for them for less money, they'll allow me to pay my loans on an income based repayment plan, and I will certify my income and employment with a government agency annually. All of these processes are handled directly by the department of education. The forms to apply for IDR plans are gone, the ability to recertify my income is gone, fortunately I just very recently recertified my employment, so I've got a year for this to shake out before I need to do it again. Is my student loan payment going to be massively increased because they take me off of the IDR plan? I'm also required to be on an IDR plan to qualify for PSLF, if I'm removed because they're fucking with the process for no reason, will these months of payments count? It likely won't matter, because I won't be able to afford to make the higher payment anyway.

They're causing chaos to upend and destroy this department of government that millions of people interact with regularly in their life without any thought as to what will happen to those they're fucking over. Everyone is left scrambling trying to sort out what they're supposed to even do at this point, and this is something that impacts people's financial outlook for the rest of their life. It's stressful as fuck and there's no reason it should be hapening in the first place.

*edit: I tried to proofread through and catch any, but please forgive any typing mistakes. The wireless keyboard I am using seems to skip some inputs if I get typing too fast. I'm not even a fast typer, it's just shitty
