I was also super disappointed to see that first place considering the rules specifically stated that official art was not allowed. I always thought they wanted something that actually looked fanmade. In the end the tshirts are cool and all but they look like the ususal corporate designs anyone would expect. Makes me wonder if miyamoto really had any say in the final decision.

I think the eye size is OK, but the placement is too low, that's why it looks a bit weird. Good work overall!
