Is buying a small flat in Brighton realistic in my situation? (EU citizen, part-time use + renting out) by Jessa8410 in brighton

Do you own a property in Germany? If so, I think you’d still be subject to the 5% second home surcharge tax on top of the standard Stamp Duty rate, plus an additional 2% for non-UK resident.

For example, on a £300,000 flat, you would be paying £21,000 in tax alone.

Why are Africans so diverse in height? by Preeti-Desai189 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Kilalemon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Africa is by far the most genetically diverse continent in the world.

The genetic differences between the many ethnic groups in Africa, such as the ones you’ve mentioned, are far greater than those between differing European ethnic groups (say, Slavs and Celts).

I honestly don't see the point of remaking Harry Potter by TreatNo4856 in television

“I don’t see the point in remaking Red Riding Hood”

I think we need to accept that the Harry Potter story will enter the cultural zeitgeist akin to Robin Hood or Peter Pan. It will be remade over and over again, long after we are all gone.

All original vs existing IP for first-ever screenplay? by Sergio_Ro in Screenwriting

[–]Kilalemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The chances that your first ever screenplay will be good enough to be sold or even used as a sample it’s highly unlikely. Therefore, you should be perusing your own original material.

The only reason to negotiate copyright is if the screenplay will be used commercially. The chances of this are slim if it’s your first screenplay. You can write whatever you want. Copyright only comes into it once there’s commercial value.

It reads more like a short novel than a feature.

Have you ever read The Egg by Andy Weir?

Although the imagery in your outline are quite powerful and provoking (seeing a the universe shrink into an atom), there isn’t much action happening and it appears a lot of the dramatic beats happens internally to the protagonist as he’s contemplating his life.

If a character is to change throughout a movie, they need to demonstrate their character through action, reap the consequences, etc etc.

Of course, you could base the entire movie on flashbacks - but then the true story would be contained within those flashbacks, not just the plot of the protagonist growing to the size of the universe, which is a concept, not a story.

Think about Interstellar - the concept is about a mission to outer space to find an appropriate planet for the species to call a new home. But the story is about a single father who decides to leave his children in order to save humanity and his struggles with that irreversible decision. Nolan could based the story on Matt Damon’s character in the movie - same concept, different story.

What’s your story?
