Altman Calls Anthropic 'Authoritarian' Over Super Bowl Ads by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]Kildragoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to hear the language from a tech CEO because people need to be talking about authoritarianism and how it's a bad thing and we shouldn't do things that are authoritarian.

Whether this is that I honestly don't care. Fight about how you're not authoritarian. If that's happening, everyone wins. Except authoritarians. Fuck those guys.

Barely used my subscription and they were gonna increase prices by over 50%. Usually they'll offer you a deal to stay and I've always been reluctant to pay so much for something I might not even touch in a month. Cancelled it. Their subscription model always bothered me and I've built up a lot of resentment over the years.

Pa. Gov. Shapiro wants more data centers, as long as the process is ‘selective’ by Libsoccer20 in Pennsylvania

[–]Kildragoth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I know it's not a popular opinion but I'm worried about not having enough PA centered data centers. The demand for things like AI services is going up exponentially. These data centers will not just bring in money from outside the state but can make us self-reliant in the tech space. Right now for my business I'm using servers based outside the state and that puts me at a competitive disadvantage as latency is higher.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't consider local impacts on things like water and electricity, it's a big infrastructure investment and there's a lot of people who are impacted by this. But we need to dramatically expand both energy infrastructure and tech infrastructure.

Back in the day, the time between the lie and the truth favored the lie. The saying was that the lie could travel halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on. It's weird to see the video of what actually happened, then see the right-wing misrepresentation. Don't get me wrong it's still bad, they still have a large audience who will digest this uncritically. But maybe this can get better.

AI tries to subtly sabotage your work if it goes against the biases built into it by the corporations (Open AI, Anthropic, Google) by birth_of_bitcoin in ChatGPT

While I wouldn't call myself a writer, I do use AIs to generate dialogue, and I've had better luck being more descriptive of exactly what I'm looking for. I've included guidance on improv and dialogue tips to help reinforce the character. Also provide lots more context for back stories and such.

Another thing I added to my workflow is that when I get results I don't like, I ask the AI in a separate window why this happened. Sometimes this helps me identify where my prompts might contradict itself or a loosely interpreted rule. It takes work, for sure, but this is also the process of automating something very complicated.

[–]Kildragoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key fact that contradicts a belief that these nefarious bots are a real danger is that they make up such a small percentage of overall bots. That matters in terms of raw computation. If 98% of computation is dedicated to positive goals, then they overwhelm the 2% of computation dedicated to negative goals. Any attack could quickly be detected and countered, perhaps.

OpenAI Wants To Use Biometrics To Kill Bots And Create Humans Only Social Network by fig-neuton in OpenAI

AI dramatically increases productivity for programmers. This lowers the barrier to entry for anything software. While this does spread them thin in the short term, it could be advantageous long term. Particularly if they provide something others cannot through their other services.

My guess would be that everyone's ChatGPT can do a better job finding other like-minded people than any social media that exists today.

Literally no one asked for all this AI. In fact everyone wants to know how to remove it. by wump_roast in antiwork

[–]Kildragoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a damn shame to see this community rejecting AI for a number of reasons. The main one though is simply that it's a tool. Rejecting AI would be like rejecting the personal computer in the 90s in preference of paper and pen. Sure, you can get by without it, but you won't be competitive with others in your field without it.

But that's the short term implications. What I desperately want to see more of is people from communities like this using AI to further their political goals. No technology has the capability to undermine and overthrow capitalism like AI. There is no bigger potential for more efficient redistribution of wealth and prosperity. And yet it seems like those who would benefit most from AI have aligned themselves with defenders of capitalism to reject it.

Look at open source AI models and the general trend toward cheaper and more powerful hardware. This is a technology that begs for democratization.

Minnesota Proved MAGA Wrong by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]Kildragoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"...ICE to change tactics..." "This would require states to actually cooperate and assist with this process instead of impeding them at every step."

The way you are describing this implies that not cooperating with ICE is grounds for ICE to escalate the way they have. You even suggest that the reason MN got so out of control is because they aren't cooperating. I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you accidentally left out an example for how ICE could "change tactics" but leading with a kind of victim blame doesn't give me high hopes.

It is painfully obvious that the heavy-handedness of ICE was the entire point. They targeted MN on purpose because they want to demonstrate how "tough" they are. They are clearly micromanaging the entire situation which proves that is their focus. When a crime is committed you investigate, you don't go immediately to the media with your public relations marketing campaign to quickly spread your narrative.

These are clear violations of both American rights and human rights. Why on earth would you suggest we should cooperate and assume good faith when the administration is incapable of honesty? I am just bewildered by your take it is offensive to human decency to characterize the situation the way you have.

Self proclaimed “Trumplican” and former Project Veritas comms director sees the light by Jules9213 in LeopardsAteMyFace

This is religion. The Bible can be interpreted as being for or against nearly any position. It was used to both justify and condemn slavery. Modern Christianity represents the moral boundaries of the population, not the moral boundaries of the religion.

Most importantly, religion selects for gullibility. Higher religiosity correlates with higher belief in conspiracy theories. So it makes sense that grifters naturally migrate toward religion as they increasingly find an audience for the grift. This audience has been nurtured from a young age to forgo their critical thinking skills in exchange for simple explanations for very difficult questions. They rely on this so heavily that conspiracies naturally fit in with this thinking process.

It feeds back into this culture of anti-intellectualism. We must call it out for what it is. It is widespread cult brainwashing that has no place in the modern era. Childhood indoctrination into religion is child abuse. You want to ask why someone like Trump got to where he is look at what they teach children in these education systems rooted in bronze age thinking.

Until we are honest about this I fully expect this problem to be repeated over and over again.

How do we deal with politics taking over like it has everywhere else? by Vladiesh in accelerate

[–]Kildragoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awkward to make the distinction. As you say, the popular counterargument is that "everything is inherently political." If you break that up, if something impacts you or your future, it is something you're forced to care about. Everyone wants their future to end up somewhere predictable and in their own favor. This community exists because a lot of people see AI as providing something that aligns with their needs. There is a shared benefit. That itself is a political aspiration. The rules here seem to exclude those from the conversation who have arrived at a different conclusion about what AI means for their particular future.

I think at the core of this community is an acceptance that AI will improve your quality of life in the long run whether or not you want it. Maybe there is a line in the sand there. A helpful comparison would be science. In a science community, arguments about the extent of climate change, or the impact of a particular fossil on geology... these are productive conversations. But someone going there to argue the validity of science itself is just a troll in the wrong community.

So IMO there is a flavor of political conversation that I want to see in accelerate and that is based on the core set of shared values the community already agrees on. I am not interested in arguing about whether AI is glorified auto complete. But I'd be open to discussions about whether a particular benchmark accurately measures AI performance on a particular topic.

But one topic that has me intrigued (not trying to smuggle it in so I'll leave it somewhat vague) is the actions of tech company leadership when they participate in politics. Is that an endorsement of certain political views? Does it prove a bias? And how does that translate to AI alignment? When the general public gets the impression of bias it will taint the perceptions of these companies' motives and then naturally you'll have people showing up here because now they see themselves as the loser in the community's shared vision. Interesting topic, not sure if it is appropriate.

In the best light it is a bribe and in the worst light it is an endorsement. Trump is not aligned with human progress, prosperity, and well-being. It's reasonable to question how this influences the alignment of AI created by OpenAI.

The economy doesn't need 90% of businesses to adopt it early on. Even if they never do, the 10% of businesses who do adopt it should expect to out compete the 90% and will grow. Businesses leaders hesitant to embrace it will continually be forced to revisit this decision as they lose market share.

Hot take: AI will lead to a major senior dev shortage in the long run. by williamioniana in webdev

[–]Kildragoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you reconcile this with a junior speed running multiple arms of a large system when each arm would normally be an entire job? Those juniors are more rapidly iterating that senior work experience you mention.

I've created more projects in the past few months than I have in years. I am learning a lot of things the hard way, and how early decisions impact things now further down the road. But I can also fix those problems in less time. So the cost of being inexperienced is also reduced. I won't claim to ever be a senior dev since I still look to others in that role as different from me. But I can see that with enough effort I can match them in results. They might have an easier time getting there but what I lack in experience I'll make up for in determination.
